Homework 2 Answer the following questions. Follow directions and show all of your work to avoid point deductions. Please be as neat and orderly as possible, as well as clear about your answers and work. I will not grade any homework that is not understandable, messy, or incomplete. Homework is due, Monday October 31st, 2011 I. Read the following statement. Find the mystery compound or compounds using the descriptions given. Write the name of the compound (using IUPAC rules), its formula, classification of inorganic compound, and the type of bond that hold the compound together. 1. I have two compounds that belong to the same period. Their valence electrons are found in the 4s orbital but at times use their 3d orbitals to make bonds. The oxidation state of one of the elements can be either +2 or +3. I have it as a solid and will be using it in a +2 oxidation state. Lack of this compound in the blood can cause humans to have anemia. The second compound is a metal oxide or ternaryoxisalt. The metal has an unfilled 9 electrons in its d orbital, and the other two elements are two nonmetals that belong in the same family. One of them has an average atomic mass of about 16, and the other is found as an oxyanion with the latter. II. Complete the reactions below. Balance the equation and identify the type of reaction. Name each of the compounds in the reaction using the IUPAC Rules. 1. Iron in the product will have an oxidation state of +3 Fe (s) + Cl2(g)______________ (s) 2. The oxidation state of copper in this compound is +2 Cu(s) + AgNO3 (aq) ____________ (aq) + Ag (s) 3. __________ (aq) + Al_____ (aq) PbCl2 + Al(NO3)3
