WHAT IS SERVICE ?

Listen to the Sstory of the The Little Girl and the Star Fish.

One hot Sunday, a businessman was walking along the beach and saw the seashore lined with millions and millions of Sstarfish. He saw a little girl picked up one starfish and threow it into the water. He approached the girl and asked her what she was doing. She said she was trying to save the starfish by putting them back in the water., as Tthey willould dry up if they awere out of the water for too long.

The businessman said, “But there are so many of them. How can you save them all?” The little girl replied, “ Well, I can’t save them all, but at least I can save this one.” She took the starfish she had in her hand and put it back to safety in the sea.

What does this story tell you about contributing to community?

SERVICE FOR THE COMMUNITY

The three steps towards Service are:

1) Ready

2) Render

3) Reflect

4)

Service for the community is about meeting REAL community needs. Hence it is necessary to look at the needs of a target community before taking any action.

Case Study 1

As preparation for BB CARES in September, develop an action plan to find out the welfare needs of individuals within the community.

Work as a team to set up a checklist to cater to the beneficiaries’ needs during this event.

See if your checklist is directed towards understanding what the real needs of the beneficiaries are. Practice interviewing techniques with your friends in the class.

MODULE 9: SERVICE

SERVICE : WITH A PASSION

Service to the community begins with understanding how one’s passion can be translated into beneficial contributions to the community.

What is your passion?

Write down two things that you love doing most that can benefit others as well.

1)

2)

Write down two things that you are naturally good at doing that benefits others too.

1)

2)

Your talent is a combination of what you love to

do and what you do really well,;these are your unique contributions

to the community.

MAXIMISING YOUR TALENT

MODULE 9: SERVICE

Use your talents by expressing them whenever you can. If your talent is music, play or sing every day. If your talent is swimming, do some swimming every day. Small contributions will lead to big results.

Develop your talent by pursuing education and training so that your talents can become fully developed. Your natural talents need to be exercised and trained. Look at where you can go with further education to enhance your talents – maybe music lessons, university, or writing classes.

Set goals to improve and develope your talents. Check that you are on track and match your behaviour to your goals.

Make a commitment to pursue a career that best suits your talents. Do not choose a career out of fear or coercion. You can be of better service to yourself and to the community if you are happy and are using your talents.

STEP 2 : PROVIDING THE SERVICE

As you go about your service, think about these pointers.

If they a pointer are is good, check the box next to it.

Accept kind words with grace., dDo not react negatively or reject or laugh at words of appreciation. Be gracious in accepting compliments. Say ‘thank you for your kind words’ in response.

If you are upset about someone’s language or behaviour, take a stand by walking away rather than staying. By staying, you are supporting the person’s actions ??? non-verbally.

Whatever you put out to others, is what you will get back, so treat other people in exactly the way you want them to treat you. So For example, say you are sorry when you feel you have been wronged someone or done something wrong; don’t be stubborn.

Choose a life path from based on your talents and from on what you love doing – the more you shine, the more light you can shine on the community.

PARTNER WORK

Share an experience that you have had while you were doing a service tofor the community. Did doing the service add value to your experience?

If you it have did not, ask yourself why not?. What could you have done better?

21

Page 24: Module 9 V3

MODULE 9: SERVICE

STEP 3 : REFLECTING ON YOUR EXPERIENCES

. Put a check if you think the pointers are good ideas

. Keep a journal to reflect on your experiences in serving others.

Do you like what you are doing and can you make the experience any better for yourself and others?

What have you learnt about yourself and do you like it?

How has this service experience helped you to be more conscious of your role in the community?

Wouilld you continue to serve when the project is completed?

Use these pointers as a reflection for your service-learning journey.
