About IM3I

Tired of managing and searching audio-visual media?

We are, and we decided to do something about it!

IM3I provides the creative media sector with a

framework to enable new ways of searching,

summarising and visualising large multimedia

archives. This paves the way for a multimedia

information management platform that is more

flexible, adaptable and customisable than current

repository software and enables new opportunities

for content owners to exploit their digital assets.

Based on a service-oriented architecture, with a

variety of services for processing, analysing,

indexing, tagging, annotating searching and

publishing the platform can be integrated into

existing offerings and infrastructures and supports

virtually all content-related services for managing

and publishing multimedia content.

The main elements composing the IM3I platform

are:

• A back-end where diverse content-based

indexing modules can be composed into

pipelines and workflows; easily

customisable to store extracted

metadata, annotations and other content

into any repository structure.

• An environment that exploits repository

content by the authoring of flexible user

interfaces whereby each interface

element can be fully configured regarding

its layout, the data element it represents

and the functionality it provides. This

environment is generic enough to allow for

the designing and building of a variety of

web front-ends to interface with

multimedia content.

The IM3I platform has been applied in media

production scenarios, as part of an educational

content workflow, and for publishing archived

content from repositories and proved so its

versatility in composing services into pipelines and

constructing a variety of interfaces to support

content workflows.

Media production This scenario presents the application of

the IM3I-platform from the production

team of a weekly TV programme on

historic events. It highlights how users with

different roles e.g. production manager,

production team, archivists, general

public, interact from their own

perspective in the same production

project with the video and audio

materials stored in the same repository.

The search-engine makes use of both

meta-data and semantic data intrinsic to

the materials, which are annotated at the

segment level. The interaction of the

general public with the IM3I platform also

highlights possible features and

functionalities related to generating

publicly available documentary listings.

Educational content workflow The IM3I platform is here used in an

educational institution to allow students to

communicate in a structured way with

their supervisors about their Final Master

Projects. It covers the stages from the

submission of proposals until the final

evaluation of their project and it is

conceived as a tool to keep track of the

materials delivered from the students and

the feedbacks received from the

supervisors. A third user, the

communication expert of the institution,

can also access the student’s projects in

order to publish them e.g. on the

institution’s website. More than a simple

communication tool, the search-engine

makes use of semantic and manual

annotation as well as meta-data.

Publishing archived content This scenario exemplifies the use of the

IM3I platform by an archive aiming to

open up content to a more ‘social use’

and invite teachers and students to

prepare presentations on historical

events. As such, the archive makes

available a collection as an IM3I

repository and allows the authoring of a

“playlist functionality” so that teachers

can use the content collection to

prepare student assignments and lessons.

The IM3I platform is further used as a tool

for the students to prepare presentations

using multimedia illustrations on a specific

subject. Hence, the IM3I-Platform is here

conceived as an easy-to- handle

management system to work with

audiovisual materials.
