Paying Waste:

Sewage Contains More Usable Energy

Than Scientists Thought

BY MIKE ORCUTT SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN 1 /11/2011

A new study finds a previous estimate of wastewater's potential as

a renewable energy source "a substantial underestimation"

During anaerobic digestion of

organic matter

Through RAHFA's, the organic matter is degraded

anaerobically

• 90% is converted into biogas (Combination of

different gases, resulting from the metabolism

of different communities of anaerobic bacteria

that degrade organic matter)

• 10% mineralized sludge

Entrance wastewater to the plant:

• Pretreatment removes all materials that can be easily collected,

like trash, tree limbs, leaves, branches, and other large objects.

Receiving Wastewater

• Reception: Sump Tank

a) Wastewater Collection to be pumped to tank distributor

b) It is the only point that requires electricity consumption

throughout the plant

Mineralized Sludge Tank

• Sludge Tank

- Receiving mineralized anaerobic sludge

Once sludge is separated from the lixiviates, sludge is completely dried and is ready to be used as a fertilizer.

- Lixiviates Tank

Receiving lixiviates from the sludge tank. The Lixiviates are drained by gravity to the sand chamber to mix with wastewater.

Product used: Fertilize

Bell Biogas Storage

Metal frame with water seal to store biogas

Biogas Composition:

• 55-70% Methane

• 30-40% Carbon Dioxide

• 1-3% Hydrogen

• 1-5% other gases including hydrogen sulfide (H2S)

Bell Biogas Storage

Methane is a fuel with a heat content 38.3MJ / m3

(36273.4 BTU / m3)

Can be used to produce

• Heat

• Energy

• Lighting

• Mechanical power

Biogas Applications

Product used: Energy

POLISHINGAs a complementary treatment, an artificial wetland (swamp) with

local plants or a biofilters may be built, this reinforces the removal

of nutrients from the water such as phosphorus and nitrogen.

INLET TO THE SWAMP

OUTLET

Artificial Wetland:

• Channels Structure planted abundantly with local plants

• Removal of nitrates and phosphates

• Integrates the landscape as part of green areas of the home, hotel or

development

• Treated water can be used in fish farming projects

Compliance with Official Standards, it is usable in:

1. Agriculture

2. Nurseries

3. Green Areas

4. Car wash and facilities

5. Construction
