The Future Web

• Sites need to be operational as soon as possible to reduce burn rates, build an audience & stake out a niche

• Feature rich sites need to reach all browsers, mobile interfaces and interact with other services – the cloud is your friend

• A site is valued on the audience or revenue it can generate – not the technology employed

• Web 2.0 or Mashing was just the start – a combination of services, infrastructure & federated profiles is required

Page 12: Echelon Slide Deck

How to get there

•Open source is a huge piece in reducing licensing costs but it is not enough – enter cloud computing

•Social features are considered defacto now – not just the icing on the cake

•Location based services becoming a common factor due to the mobility wave

•The web ID, profile or Authentication is becoming a service

•Content is still king but it comes from everywhere

Page 13: Echelon Slide Deck

Why care about Yahoo! ?

•SEA users on Yahoo!: • 63 million

•SEA users on Yahoo! Mail: • 30 million

•SEA users on Yahoo! FP: • 45 million

Content is King!

Y! is chocked full of content but also makes it easy for developers to access the data while making it useful for writing apps around it

Make simple queries, get back XML, and combine they for interesting mashup apps or to enhance current apps with more content

• Flickr, Weather, Upcoming

• YQL hits the spot again

• select * from flickr.photos.search where text="singapore" limit 10

• select * from weather.forecast where location="THXX0002”

• select start_date from upcoming.events where woeid=23424948

Mark Pincus – From Zynga (Farmville)

• Web 1.0 was discovery of the web and links• Web 2.0 was the Google, both search and AdSense• Web 3 is the App Economy• The currency of this realm is what users want to talk about and like, “social breadcrumbs”

• Social plumbing – host portals – social applications.• Facebook is plumbing and the portal.• But don’t believe this is going to end with Facebook.• There will be many forms of social plumbing and portals.

Mary Meeker – From Morgan Stanley

• Location-based services are the “secret sauce” of what makes the mobile web interesting.

• The iPhone/iPod touch is the fastest growing piece of hardware the world has ever seen.

• And usage share versus market share of the iPhone is incredible, meaning it will only grow.

• Facebook is becoming the multimedia repository, and it will allow you to do so much.

• Companies absolutely need to be on board with the mobile web. They have some time, but they need to act..
