Defender Direct IT Infrastructure Department CWAM Super Service Challenge Who did you serve, and what did you accomplish that day? The Defender IT Infrastructure Department served Shepherd Community Center. Patrick Barnes, Brittany Farrar, Bryant Dawson, Derek Fowler, and Scott Lavengood decided to help Shepherd’s IT by doing the following: 1. A Wireless site survey to help determine how many new wireless access points they need. Their existing wireless was in dire need of repair. We performed a site survey, worked to get great pricing on new access points, configured and helped install the access points. 2. We rebuilt 90 laptops and donated them to Shepherd Community. This will allow them to replace their current old laptops with newer ones. What is your team's plan for an ongoing relationship with the nonprofit? The next project slated for 2014 is to work with them to replace their phone system. It is very old and could break at any moment. If it does break, they will have great difficulty finding replacement parts for it. We will work with them to install an open-source phone system with all the latest features. We will also continue to support their IT with any questions or direction they need to head. We plan on having quarterly meetings to keep them headed in the right direction. What would your nonprofit do if they won part of the prize money? They would use this money to help build a better IT infrastructure so they can continue to help the poor and not have to keep having IT slow them down.
