Time •Approximately 90- 120 min. depending on time allotted for model house construction

Page 4: 3.thermal systems cooling

Overview •In this lesson, students explore energy efficient cooling strategies by building and improving upon a small model house and testing its internal temperature.

Page 5: 3.thermal systems cooling

Objectives

•Students will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of different cooling strategies by testing them on model houses.•Students will be able to explain the relationship between solar and internal temperature gains

Page 6: 3.thermal systems cooling

Standards Addressed •P.12C.5 – students know the relationship between heat and temperature.•N.12.B.2 – students know consumption patterns, conservation efforts, and cultural or social practices in countries have varying environmental impacts.

Next Generation Science Standards•HS-PS3-4.Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that the transfer of thermal energy when two components of different temperature are combined within a closed system results in a more uniform energy distribution among the components in the system (second law of thermodynamics).

Crosscutting Concepts•Energy and Matter

Changes of energy and matter in a system can be described in terms of energy and matter flows into, out of, and within that system. (HS-PS3-3)

Materials •Keep it cool and keep it cool Building Materials Worksheet •Scissors, glue, and tape •Cotton balls •White, brown , and green construction paper •Aluminum foil • thermometers (one per student)• light fixtures ( one per student group) •200 watt incandescent light bulb (one per student group)

Vocabulary •Passive cooling – technologies and design features that cool without consuming energy•Refrigerant – a special fluid used in air conditioners that heats air when it condenses and cools air when it evaporates.•Albedo- a measurement of how well an object reflects sunlight; higher albedo indicates higher reflectivity

Questions 1.What is the difference

between passive cooling and other cooling strategies?

2. Name three passive cooling strategies?

3. What is albedo?
