saree for queens

Venkatagiri is a small village in Nellore district

in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where it is famous in producing its style of handlooms. Padmasali, Devanga, Pattusali and Karnasali are the main castes that are involved in this handloom industry. Out of the 50000 population in the village, 30% are dependent on this profession itself. In the

olden days, the Venkatagiri weavers used to weave a saree for the queens and earn their livelihood, which will be sufficient for the whole year.

Along with Cotton, the weavers here, even produce the mix of Cotton and Sink sarees and also pure silk sarees. It is the count in the fabric that actually gives the softness. More the counts, softer the fabric will be. The counts used in cotton are usually 100 (length) - 100 (breadth) and in silk it is 3 ply.

Process of bringing out a final product

The merchants provide the yarn and designs to

the weavers. The weavers will then turn yarn in Charka and load into the loom and then weaves the fabric as per the design, the merchant ordered.

Dyeing: Initially, the yarn is washed and then dipped in the required colour, as per the order of the merchant. The weaver now goes on turning the yarn until the colour is evenly mixed. (However, the mixing of various colours gives a unique and durable colour to the fabric).

The yarn is now washed and dried and starched later. This starching gives a polished look to the fabric and the

‘‘Venkatagiri is identified for its unique weaving excellence and the sarees can be ordered with the selective designs and prices.’’

applied colour now gets inseparable from the fabric. (However, this starched yarn is provided by the merchants).

After starching, the yarn is turned in a charka and it is now, where the yarn shapes up into the thread, which is used for weaving.

What is Pacham?

Pacham is the length of the yarn loaded in looms. One

Pacham will make 4 sarees. On an overall average, one weaver can make 10 sarees a month and those 10 will fetch him Rs.4000. This is the next process after the yarn shaped up into the thread.

Weaving

Pit looms are generally used in Venkatagiri. These are fixed in the

ground level and there will be a pit in which looms peddle will be placed and the weaver will sit on the floor and use his hands and legs to weave. The Venkatagiri is getting updated with the trend. Now it is even able to produce dress materials along with the various kinds of sarees.

Existence of handloom industry is a question

This weaving skill is being carried as a profession traditionally. It is a

hereditary from their ancestors. But as the wages are very low, many weavers are quitting this profession and are in search of other professions. Especially during the rainy seasons, the pit looms are forced to close, as the rain water gets clogged in the ground. So to overcome this problem, it would be better if the government thinks upon the

question

issue and provide a proper rehabilitation package. Otherwise, the historical handloom industry would just be left in those history books itself and nowhere else.

Jats

Tradition

Jats believe in “living with the people is what loving the people.”

Page 17: Wishesh magazine August 2015

AUGUST 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

Tradition

The Jat people are the natives of South Asia, mainly the Punjab region of India

and Pakistan. There are around 33 million of a strong ethnic group of people living in these regions. Keeping other things aside, the tradition of Jats is something to be discussed about.

The first main thing that drags everyone to know about Jats tradition is their social status. Irrespective of their official or financial positions in life, the Jats give a good importance to this aspect. They concern more about the age and give the preference to the aged people, even though the younger ones are more capable and educated than the elders. If two Jats is sitting on a bed, the younger one, has to sit at the foot of the bed, giving place to the elder at the head of the bed, even though such elder is poor. In the same way, if the

same hooka is shared by a number of Jats, then the youngest one should hold the ‘hooka’ and pass it around in turn to the others. The system is thus a very socialistic nature.

Marriages within the community

Be it male or female, the Jats are confined to marry the girls or boys of

their community itself. Especially, a Jat girl marrying a non- Jat boy is considered as a big sin. Not ending here, boys and girls of the same gotra are considered as brothers and sisters to each other and hence restricted to marry the people of the same gotra. Marriage within the same village is also restricted, even though the girl and boy belong to a different gotra.

Tradition

Advantages of these marriage restrictions

Due to these kind of restrictions on marriages, a perfect racial purity is

maintained among the Jats. A lot of cross breeding takes place within the bounds of the community, which in turn promotes good health and also prevents physical degeneration, as it occurs in a few of the communities, where they marry first cousins.

Widow marriage is a social obligation

Widow marriage is named as ‘Karewa’ and this is practiced as a social

obligation. In the presence of her late husband’s relatives, one year after the death of husband, a widow is asked, whether she would like to remarry and if so, with whom. Generally the choice will be limited to the

brothers or first cousins of her late husband. The name of the person, whom the woman takes, is bound to marry her, obliged by the custom. However, the widows with children and those women, who are out of the young age, do not remarry.

No prostitutes in Jats.

Unlike Rajputs, Brahmins and Baniyas, who treat the widows as evil beings, the

Jats treat the widows with utmost sympathy. In fact, this might be the reason of why a Jatni is never heard of as a prostitute.

Jats are branded as irreligious and low by other castes for many reasons like above.

Even then, Jats follows strict Shastras and believe in them.

Jats are known for joint families.

A large number of families used to share the same house in Jats and there are

very rare cases in Jats, where the joint family system has proven to be wrong..As living with the people is what loving the people, Jats are identified for their mankind.

TThe people residing in the Marwar region of Rajasthan in India are generally

known as Marwaris. Though Marwari as a genre originated from a name of a place, the Marwari people have spread to the various regions in the country. In that sense, for expanding their business and trade networks, they are even spread to many other neighboring countries too. The central and western parts of Rajasthan include in the Marwar region. The word Marwar is derived from a Sanskrit word called Maruwat, the meaning of which is ‘desert’.The fresco paintings on Havelis development

is linked with the history of the Marwaris.Marwaris generally get addicted to or blended into the place they reside in. For example, in Punjab, Marwaris adopts Punjabi, and in Gujarat, Gujarati, and so forth. Significant concentrations of Marwari are observed in Kolkata, in the Burrabazar area and are leading lights in business there. A large number of Marwaris are also in Mumbai. Marwaris have founded businesses in neighboring Nepal, especially in Beerganj, Viratnagar and Kathmandu.

Marwari Women

Marwaris, that too, the women are identified for their orthodox nature. The parents of the daughters tend to get their daughters married as early as possible, usually, between the ages of 18-21 years.

After marriage, the bride is wholly responsible to her in-laws. Women are firstly not educated and if though they are, they do not work after the marriage. They are provided with huge jewellery and clothes and are kept away from the financial issues completely.

Engagement Ceremony: This ceremony is organized in the boy’s home. As a part of the ceremony, bride’s brother applies ‘tika’ on boy’s forehead, which is made from turmeric, rice floor or sandal powder. From the bride’s side, only the bride’s brother joins the function. After that, the Ganapati Pooja is organized in both groom and bride’s home.

All about Marwari wedding ceremoniesMarwari marriages are what, that shows the pride of their culture. Here are the most traditional wedding rituals of Marwari culture.

Pithi Dastoor Ceremony: Both bride and groom’s families participate in this ceremony. This particular ceremony is continued till the completion of the marriage. To enhance the glow in the face, the paste of turmeric and sandal powder is applied to the bride and groom. According to this ritual, the bride and groom are not permitted to meet each other or step out from their home.

Mehfils: This ceremony is performed in both bride and groom’s houses separately in the evening. A special dance of Marwari culture is performed by women in this function. The bride is given a vital position to sit and watch the dance. On the other side, a few of the singers take part in singing at the groom side and thus entertain each other.

Mahira Dastoor: The maternal uncle (Mama) of bride/ groom is received by

the bride/ groom’s mother with a luxurious welcome, as a part of this ceremony. Palla Dastoor: As part of this ceremony, the groom offers several gifts like clothes, jewellery for the bride. The clothes that he gifted are worn by the bride on the wedding day. He provides them beautiful cloth, jewelry and many other gifts. The jewellery and cloth that bride receives from the groom is worn on the wedding day. Along with these, Toran, Nikasi, Jaimala, Paanigrahan, Granthi-Bandhan and a few others are the part of the Marwari marriages, where a unique culture is exhibited in every aspect. Finally, though the Marwaris are spread across the country and also a few of them, out of the country too, they are strictly accustomed to the culture they follow. There are very rare instances, they came out of it.

STORY FOR KIDS

YASHODATIES KRISHNA

‘Supreme Lord Bound By The love Of His Devotees’

One day, Yashoda, the queen of Nanda, was churning curd in a pot. She was relishing herself by singing songs describing Krishna’s pranks. Meanwhile, little Krishna felt hungry. He went towards his mom, Yashoda, and caught hold of the churning rod to stop his mother from churning. He looked at Yashoda as if he wanted to

say, “Mother stop churning. I am very hungry.”

Page 25: Wishesh magazine August 2015

STORY FOR KIDS

Yashoda smiled at her little boy and took him on her lap. She started feeding

hungry Krishna. After a while she felt the smell of overflowing milk from pan that was kept on the fire. She immediately dropped Krishna on the floor and ran towards the kitchen. Krishna who was half fed felt so irritated that his eyes turned red and lips tremoured. Out of anger, he took a piece of stone and threw at the churning pot. When the pot broke, he took a large amount of butter in his little hands and ran into a room with false tears in his eyes. He sat in a corner to hide him and started eating the butter.

After returning from the kitchen, Yashoda saw the broken pot and curds flowing on the floor. She understood that this is Krishna’s prank and slowly followed his butter smeared footprints. She saw Krishna sitting on an upturned wooden mortar and sharing the butter with monkeys, which came down from the trees. Krishna was watching around anxiously for Yashoda, as he knew that his mother would be angry. Yashoda silently approached him with a stick in her hand. As soon as Krishna saw his mother, he jumped from the mortar and began to run. Yashoda ran behind him holding the stick. After some time he let his tired mother to catch him. Yashoda saw him weeping. Krishna looked very uneasy.

After looking at his weeping son, the kind hearted Yashoda threw the stick in her hand. She said, “Krishna, Your mischief has crossed all boundaries. I gave you all the freedom and now I will tie you so that you cannot do further mischief. You will also not be able to play with your friends.” Saying this, Yashoda brought a piece of rope and placed Krishna beside mortar and tried to tie him to it. But the rope fell short. She got another piece and tried to join both. Even then the rope fell short by two inches. She continued the act of joining the ropes till there were no ropes left at her house. All the Gopikas who were standing around and watching the Krishna’s leela started laughing. Yashoda had no option left with her except to join

them in the laughter. Looking at his mother’s embarrassment, Krishna allowed her to tie him to the mortar.

Such is the Krishna’s leela, the supreme Lord, who controls the whole Universe is bound by the love of his devotees. After tying Krishna to the mortar, Yashoda left the place to carry on with her work. While all others were engaged in their work, a loud noise was heard. Every one ran towards Krishna, suspecting that Krishna was hurt. They were left startled, when they saw that Krishna dragged the heavy mortar and pulled it, as it was struck between two Arjun trees. Both the trees that fell down were the cursed sons of Kubera, the god of wealth. Sage Narada cursed Kubera’s sons, Nalakubara and Manigriva, to become trees due to their indolent behavior. In this way, Krishna, the almighty, freed them from the curse.

Green Juicemaking this juice will bring warmer

weather that is supposed to come with spring too! In the springtime, I love a light and fresh green juice that’s lower in sugar and packed with nutrients, like this one. To make this juice extra nutrient-packed, I added two types of dark-colored greens, kale and romaine, and added electrolytes with the celery. Since this recipe only calls for one piece of fruit, it’s also lower in sugar and in calories. Enjoy this juice while looking at beautiful spring flowers,

world news

The historic nuclear with Iran opens up a new hope to the world. So as to ensure that Iran does not obtain the nuclear bomb, World major powers secured a historic deal. Iran and the

European Union flagged down this as a new chapter of hope for the world. However, Islamic republic’s arch foe,

Israel labeled it as a ‘historic mistake’.

The pact that was reached on day 18 of marathon talks in Vienna is intended to

resolve a 13-year clash over Iran’s nuclear ambitions after frequent diplomatic failures and threats of military action.

At the start of final meeting that approved the record formally, Federica Mogherini, EU foreign policy chief, said “I think this is a sign of hope for the entire world and we all know this is very much needed in this time.”

Vladimir Putin, Russian President, said in a statement that, “We are certain that today the world has breathed a huge sigh of relief.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Reaction Over The Deal

Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian Foreign Minister, said the accord with the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany was a “historic moment” as it will provide sanctions relief for Tehran’s crippled economy.

“We are reaching an agreement that is not perfect for anybody, but it is what we could accomplish and it is an important achievement for all of us,” Zarif said. “We are starting a new chapter of hope.”

Strict UN oversight

By putting strict limits on nuclear activities of Iran for a minimum of ten years and calling for

However, it is unclear if the committee will formalize a statement at the end of the

stringent UN oversight, the world powers hope to stop the preparation of an atomic bomb.

For five years, the international arms embargo against Iran will remain, whereas special permission of the UN Security Council would make deliveries possible. Visits to military bases are allowed to probe any suspicious nuclear activity. The capital of Iran, Tehran will cut the umber of centrifuges by around two-thirds i.e. from around 19,000 to 6,104.

Painful international sanctions that choked it’s economy by cutting oil exports of

OPEC’s fifth-largest producer by a quarter will be lifted and billions of dollars in frozen assets unblocked. More cooperation between Tehran and Washington would be possible, especially at an unstable time in the Middle East.

Obama’s Topmost Foreign Policy

The deal can be referred as Barack Obama’s topmost foreign policy achievement. It came six years after he told, if Iran’s leaders “unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us”.

This also came after Hassan Rouhani’s attempts to end Iran’s isolation 35 years after the Islamic revolution.

Iran’s Parliament To Review The Nuclear Deal

A special committee was set by Iranian lawmakers to review the landmark

nuclear deal after the country’s foreign minister presented a copy of the agreement to the parliament. The committee paves way to provide an opportunity to the lawmakers to discuss various points and give their opinions on it. Prior to this, the U.N. Security Council unanimously endorsed the deal.

The constitution of Iran has the right to reject any deal, even after negotiations were made by the Foreign Minister. Nevertheless, the lawmakers may not go against the deal as the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei endorsed it.

Lalit Modi – Volcanic explosion in the India politics

The controversy over Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj helping corruption-

accused former Indian Premier League (IPL) boss Lalit Modi obtain British travel documents has triggered the first controversy in the Modi government. The opposition accuses the government of protecting Lalit Modi. The government, the BJP and the RSS had rallied around External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the wake of charges that she had helped former IPL chief Lalit Modi, facing a number of cases in India, secure travel documents in the UK.Keith Vaz, the senior Labour MP of the Indian origin, has used the name of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj to put pressure on Sarah Rapson, the head of UK visa and immigration, to grant IPL founder Lalit Modi the travel papers for the United Kingdom. Leaked correspondence from Mr. Vaz, to the Home Office, shows invoking the names of Ms. Swaraj and Sir James Bevan, the British High Commissioner to New Delhi in an effort to expedite Mr. Modi’s case. In less than

24 hours after Mr. Vaz, the then chairman of the powerful House of Commons home affairs selects committee has called Ms. Rapson and Mr. Modi was granted his travel papers. In his letter to Ms. Rapson, Mr. Vaz said: “The Foreign Minister of India has spoken to me, making it very clear that the Indian government have no objection to the travel document being granted. Mrs. Swaraj has also spoken to Sir James Bevan, who, even though he was on leave, said he would speak to the relevant person in the Home Office. Frankly, everyone has been involved in this apart from Ban Ki-moon.”

While the government continued to firefight over the Modi-Swaraj issue,

Rajasthan CM Raje’s name cropped up in the controversy adding to its headache. The revelation about Raje was made in a document released by Lalit Modi’s legal team. It was mentioned that Raje, who was then the leader of opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, had given a

“Witness Statement” in August 2011 to British authorities supporting his case for immigration in Britain. Raje had allegedly said she was in favour of Modi’s immigration application on the strict clause that her name will not be revealed to the Indian authorities.

Congress has stepped up its attack against Rajasthan Chief Minister

Vasundhara Raje in the Lalit Modi controversy, saying it had conclusive proof that the BJP leader favoured the former IPL chief. The Opposition party released a copy of an affidavit to the court signed by Raje supporting Lalit Modi’s immigration application to the UK in 2011.“Lalit Modi is the symbol of black money stashed outside and Sushma Swaraj is protecting him. It is not Sushma Swaraj, who should resign, but it is the Prime Minister Modi, who should sack Sushma Swaraj because he said he would bring back black money,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters at Kudmura village in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.

“It’s a tale of two Modis. First Modi, that is Lalit Modi, the master of black money who is sitting outside [the country]. Second Modi, who is the Prime Minister and who had promised to bring back the black money. But when it came to bringing back Lalit Modi, he [the Prime Minister] is saying that we [the government] have helped him on humanitarian grounds because his relative is ill. Here in Chhattisgarh, poor tribals are suffering due to animal attacks, but the PM cannot help them on humanitarian grounds,” said Mr. Gandhi.

The Modi government was appreciated by one and all and even the

opposition was afraid that they have lost their relevance due to the honest and transparent functioning of the government. The present controversy has damaged the reputation of the government a lot. It is very difficult to regain the faith of the people of this country. Let’s wait and see what is more in store for Modi government.

Gold is not going to bounce any

time soonAs the festive season is two months away,

stakeholders are divided over the demand and the trend in prices fluctuating, even as India continued to be ranked among the top three

importers and consumers of gold.

For the first time since August 2011, domestic

gold prices have tumbled below Rs 25,000 per 10 g, reflecting an international trend causing the price of a precious metal falling intensely. According to reports, some 33 tones were sold at the Shangai spot market on July 20, 2015, as investors sought to shift focus to other avenues.

Why have the prices plunged all of a sudden? Is it because the curb on import? Is it because strengthening of the US dollar in recent times? Is it because massive selling in China? Or is it the after effect of Grexit?

World gold prices hardly rose for almost three decades, even more so when adjusted for inflation. The $ 850 per ounce price at London reached

on January 21, 1980, was exceeded only on January 3, 2008, and crossed $ 1,000 levels by mid-March, before tumbling again to $ 700-750 levels in

late October following the financial crisis. The actual rise took place only then, with prices reaching an all-time high of $ 1,895 per ounce on

September 5, 2011. But since then, they have come down to just above $ 1,100. In India, too, prices of standard 24-carat gold in Mumbai touched a record Rs 33,265 per 10 g on August 28, 2013. And on July 22, 2015, they fell to

Rs 24,820, the lowest since August 6, 2011.

’’

’’IN BUSINESSPrimarily, to know why

the gold prices have tumbled all of a sudden,

first let us know why did they actually soar.

In Bangalore, the price plunged to 24,390per 10grams which is the lowest since 2013.

Rate remained at Rs 24,390 per 10gm in the local market, same as on previous two

days after declining from Rs 24,450 on Friday and Rs 24,740 on July 12 due to lower demand and negative sentiment,” Venugopala Shetty, proprietor of Ganesha Jewellers, told IANS in Bengaluru.

“It is expected there will be a huge demand in a day or two,” said Rahul Gupta, director of the Delhi-based PP Jewellers told IANS.

The development on July 20, came despite India overtaking China as the largest importer of gold, at 769 tonnes in the last year.

“We expect the gold prices to fall by another Rs 30-40 per gram (22 carat) and settle down there,” N. Anantha Padmanabhan, managing director of NAC Jewellers, told IANS in Chennai.

The falling gold price also pulled down the prices of silver. “Currently silver is priced at Rs 36,500 per kg. We expect it to go down to Rs 35,000 per kg,” said Padmanabhan. Noting, the US dollar is strengthening and the interest rates

are expected to go up there, he said that there is pressure on the gold prices.

The demand for gold in India, during January-March of 2015 was at 191.7 tonnes, up by 15 percent as compared to the corresponding period of 2014, World Gold Council (WGC) said in a report. Total jewelry demand in India for the first quarter of 2015 was up by 22 percent at 150.8 tonnes as compared to 123.5 tonnes in Q1 of 2014.

“The current downswing in Indian gold prices is directly related to the strengthening of the US dollar in recent times. We are hoping that the present trend may be arrested soon and the prices could stabilize within a month or so,” said Mumbai Jewellers’ Federation president Rakesh Shetty.

There is a meltdown in the international commodity market in the last three-four

weeks. But today the prices fell sharply as China sold around 6,065 tonnes of gold in the morning,” Bachhraj Bamalwa, partner, Nemichand Bamalwa and past chairman of All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation told IANS. He also mentioned that it is difficult to predict the price trend in the future.

Gold is a hedge commodity and people tend to invest in the yellow metal when the global economy is hit. Now with the global economy seemingly recovering and the US dollar appreciating, people are investing in other options other than gold,

Premjit Sengupta, chief marketing officer, Senco Gold Ltd said in Kolkata.

However, it certainly seems that gold is not going to bounce any time soon. Few think that the inflation-adjusted price for gold is even lower than $1,000, so it’s not out of the question that prices could continue to fall. But if the economic situation happens to change and become more negative, attitudes towards gold may probably change quite quickly.

F CUSFTII APPOINTMENTS ROW

Gajendra Chauhan, who played ‘Yudhishthir’ in ‘Mahabharat’, was appointed as the FTII chief. This was opposed by the leftist and congress supported students were against the appointment.

’’’’

Gajendra Chauhan, who played ‘Yudhishthir’ in

‘Mahabharat’, was appointed as the FTII chief. This was opposed by the leftist and congress supported students were against the appointment. There were protests from students who said there should have been a person of higher stature to head the institution. But the student unions and the protesters refused to see the appointments in other institutes like in Kerala where a politician is appointed. The protests are motivated and is protesting only because Chauhan is a sympathizer of

BJP.

“The minister refused to comment on the appointment of Chauhan as the chairperson but instead assured that in the future there won’t be issues that hamper the curriculum of the students,” Prateek, a student who was part of the delegation that met the Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley. “We need to discuss the issue with other students first and only then will we take a call on whether we will return (to Pune) or not. However, the assurance by the minister has given us some relief,” Prateek said.

The dialogue between students and representatives of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the information and broadcasting ministry, held in Delhi did not yield any conclusive solution over the appointments of Gajendra Chauhan as chairperson. The ministry did not blink on the demand for the removal.

Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty

said that the meeting was positive as far as the academic issues of FTII and upgrading the institute to a centre of excellence were concerned.

Girish Kasaravalli, one of the key members of the delegation,

told that they had raised a lot of concerns and the minister did assure them about the future of FTII. “However, as far as the appointments are concerned, the meeting was inconclusive,” Kasaravalli said.

“Whatever the government says, I will follow. I wasn’t aware about the meetings, but I urge the students to call off the protests and start attending their classes otherwise, it will be a great loss for them,” Chauhan told reporters in Pune.

“FTII is being saffronised and people close to the BJP are being appointed as heads of cultural and art institutions,” a student told. This statement reflects the real issue of the motivated agitation. The students are being mislead by the preparators not because Chauhan is ineligible, but only because he is a sympathizer of the ruling party.

The so called pseudo secular group is against anything that

is being done by this government. They are afraid of loosing their foothold due to the overwhelming mandate BJP has got. They are not bothered about the merits of the issue, instead they are misleading and misinforming the people. This attitude is to be protested by one and all. The people of this country have to realize the hollowness of these anti-national organizations.

Whatever the government says, I will follow. I wasn’t aware about the meetings, but I urge the students to call off the protests and start attending their classes otherwise, it will be a great loss for them,

Kumbh Mela and Maha Godavari Pushkaram 2015

Kumbh Mela is one of the deified festivals of India

and is organized at a big scale. It is the world’s largest congregation of devotees from different places for a religious purpose. The Sanskrit word Kumbha refers to water jug or Kalasha.

Mythology

The strong belief is that when Gods and demons

were fighting for nector, Vishnu flew away with the pot or kalasha, during which few drops of nectar spilled in four different places. These are the places where we celebrate Kumbh Melas. They include Hardwar, Nasik,Ujjain and Prayag (Allahabad).Huge crowds of devotees who participate in Kumb Mela strongly believe that bathing or taking a holy dip in the holy rivers located in these places will cleanse all the sins of humans.

When is Kumbh Mela Observed?

Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times every twelve years. However, the site of observance rotates between four pilgrim places, which include Haridwar on the Ganges river, Ujjain on the Shipra, Nasik on the Godavari, and Allahabad (Prayag) on the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical river Sarasvati.Ardha (Half) Kumbh Mela occurs between the two Purna Kumbha Melas. It

is held at only two places, Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year. The Maha Kumbh occurs after 12 Purna Kumbh Melas i.e. every 144 years.

Mangal Pandey. One of the prime

leaders, whose rebellion sparked India’s

first war of independence in 1857.

MANGAL PANDEYNot a man, but a mission.

FREEDOM FIGHTER

He was believed to be born in a Brahmin family, where they give high importance to Hindu beliefs.

The name Mangal Pandey is preceded by the Hindi word Shaheed, which means martyr in English. A few people in his Village still claim to be his descendants. Rebel of 1857 revolt

In 1849, he joined the East India Company’s army, when he was 22 years of age. He was even the soldier in the 6th Company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry and he attacked the several regimental officers in various attacks. In fact, these attacks made him the rebel in the 1857 revolt.

Being ambitious, Pandey viewed his profession as a Sepoy as a stepping-

stone to future success. However, due to his religious beliefs, his career ambitions came into conflict. In the mid 1850s, when Pandey was posted at a garrison in Barrackpore, an Enfield rifle was introduced in the country, where it requires a soldier to bite off the ends of greased cartridges to load the weapon. Regarding this, there are few rumors spread that the lubricant used might be a cow or a pig lard, which was completely against Hindus and Muslims respectively and the British had used the lard on the cartridges. Pandey is one of the freedom fighters who fought against the British rule in India. In 1984, the Indian government even issued a commemorative postage stamp with Pandey’s stamp on it.

Pandey’s name into the history

Pandey’s name came into prominence and in fact into the Indian history, after his attack on the senior British officers came into the limelight. It was due to this reason, the British officials attacked Pandey and hung him till death.

As the attack was not a result of personal grudges but due to Pandey’s ideological (religious/patriotic) motives, Pandey is widely considered to be the First Warrior in India’s long struggle for independence from the British rule.

A few of the reports say that, Pandey was under the influence of bhang (cannabis) at the time of this incident. As the claim is not based on independent accounts, it should however be treated with a certain degree of reservation. Moreover, though the claim is believed to be true, it still does not deny the possibility that Pandey have been maintaining a personal

‘‘ ‘‘grudge against the British. There are even a few other records that proved Pandey has perfect non personal motives behind the attack. These proofs are found from the records of the British officers, who are present at the spot in those days. It reads, Pandey used four-letter words for the British in general and incited his comrades to rise against the company rule.

Surrounded by guards and European Officers, he tried to commit suicide by shooting himself and was seriously wounded. He was court-martialed on April 6, and hanged at Barrackpore on April 8, 1857.

How to keep a long distant

relationshipExciting and Interesting-It is generally perceived that a long distance

relationship has a sooner fading point than the normal ones. They say it becomes hard to keep track of things happening in a relationship where you do not meet the guy in person or when you cannot get intimate with him. Well, while to some extent the part of not being able to be there for him or not being able to communicate everything is true, the relationship can still hold those little sparks, first timers and some surprises.

1. Comparing Your Relationship With Others

Try to avoid comparing your relationship with

others relationship, as you have your own importance in your relationship. The way you behave is not at all similar to others. Try to understand that you and your boyfriend are completely different individuals.

2. Flipping Out If He Talks To Another Woman

Try to avoid jealousy when your man looks at

attractive women and talks to her. If you just flip out at that moment, it shows that you are insecure. Try to build up self esteem and no man is going to cheat you until the woman is self confident in herself. This is a secure way to be followed for any relationship to be successful.

3. Do Not Expect Him To Understand All The Time:

Do not expect the guy to understand the feeling

of a woman all the time. If you are expecting him to understand you all the time,

then you are creating your own way to end up the relationship with him. If you want him to do something, try to say it out loud.

4. Do Not Forget Your Own Life

Never try to forget your own life, friends,

interests, etc, when a man comes into your life. Try to focus on your personal issues whenever you find time and get in touch with your near and dear ones.

5. Not Appreciating Him

Try to stop looking for the things which he is

not doing and try to look for things that he had done already. Try to appreciate him and acknowledge him for what he doing. The more you appreciate him, the more he is ready to do for you at any time.

6. Do Not Try To Change Him

When you are in a relationship,

you need to take him however he is. Try to avoid changing him and take him for exactly who he is, not who you want him to be. Never criticize

7. Going Too Fast

When you are in a relationship with someone,

try to ease into the relationship to avoid losing yourself in it. Try to spend your free time with him and make him, feel free in spending time with you.

8. Never Expect More From Your Partner

Your partner is not here to meet all your needs. If he

says no, it does not mean that, he does not love you. Some demands may be impossible to fulfil and it is not his job to make you happy all the time. Try to make yourself happy and learn things to make him happy as well.

Love & Romance

But you never know what turns out to be

interesting and loved! If you are the person who feels going a mile ahead for something that is small is a waste, then you are absolutely wrong. When a person thinks that, the love doesn’t end, but considerably decreases. It is often misinterpreted that working out a relationship may not be the ideal way to set right things. Some people say ‘It should come with ease’. That is a big NO! Every relationship has to be worked out, whether you are a lover, husband, friend or even a parent. When a couple feels working out a relationship doesn’t need to be done, mark that as a downfall. It is not wrong to bend sometimes!

After trying to figure out a schedule on

who makes breakfast and who does the laundry, it might get a little tiring in a long term love to do something extra for him/her. It is also possible to take things for granted. There are plenty of ways to show your partner that you actually care,

love and respect his/her feelings and listen to their decisions. The usual chocolates, cards, flowers, may excite a person at first, but becomes really mundane after a considerable period of time. Doesn’t he/she deserve some extra love or care? Don’t you want him/her to find out you went one extra mile for your love? Then here are some tips to achieve the possibility of what is called clear bliss –

Break your schedule –

Every couple follows a particular schedule.

Whether it is about laundry or about picking up the mail, there is a timeline of who has to do it when and at what time. If one doesn’t do it, the other one doesn’t bother to do it either. Break that! It may sound a little tough to do that, but when you break the schedule by asking your partner to stay put and do it instead, that is when the changes are seen. Make breakfast on the day you are not assigned to. Pick up some flowers or try to give an extra hand when

#3 Suggest, don’t force

Go out more often –

After a hectic day, it might be difficult to drag yourself out to make an

evening out of your laziness or tiredness, but do it for them. Take your partner out, visit some unvisited places, dine at a café or a local bar and drink. Share memories and talk about what you like about the place. Divert his/her mind and make it look you want to do it for him/her. Going out does not mean only dining or talking. Go for a silent walk to the beach, or make it a totally crazy evening by taking your partner to a theme park or roller coaster ride. Meditate, do yoga or hit the gym together.

Talk after sex –Most couples do the job and never speak! That is the wrong way to go about it. Talking after sex is as important as doing it. This works for both the genders. Do not make them feel you are doing it for the pleasure or the heck of it. Stroke your partner’s hair, gently rub the cheek, kiss and tell them how great it was.

it comes to washing, etc. If you are an explorer, try to pick up a destination for your breakfast. Wake up and surprise your partner. IT can be out of blue, unplanned or even planned

Talk about problems –It is good to communicate and talk about other’s problems. It is one thing to look at your partner and figure out something is wrong and another to actually sit down and talk about what’s wrong. It makes a huge difference when you talk to him/her and advising about it works even better. Obviously your partner has a solution in mind or at least something close to a solution. She/he knows what has to be done, but when you offer your help or suggestion, it adds to their perspective by making them believe that it is nothing but a small issue. Your perspectives can add to their decisions. You should also remember that making a subtle joke or two about the problem eases it for them. But always stick to the rule#1 Do not change their perspective#2 Do not use it as a way to pin point in the future

Indian HISTORY

“India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most astrictive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only! “

Mark Twain.Ancient Indian History

Earliest historical evidence of Mehargarh

(Northwest Indian sub-continent) shows the beginning of the civilization in India at around 6500 B.C. It is the earliest and the largest urban site of that period in the world. This site has yielded enough evidence for the earliest domestication of animals, evolution of agriculture and as well as arts and crafts. The horse was first domesticated in Hindustan at around 6500 B.C. There is a progressive process of the domestication of animals, particularly cattle. The development of agriculture, began with barley and then later wheat and rice. The use of metal, began with copper and culminating in iron, along with the development of villages and towns.

It has been suggested by some historians that

an ‘Aryan Invasion’ in the Indian subcontinent took place around 1500-1000 B.C. However, current archeological data do not support the existence of any Indo Aryan or European invasion into the South Asia at any time in the pre or proto-historic periods (David Frawley). The people in this tradition were the same basic ethnic groups as in India today, with their same basic types of languages.

Two important cities were discovered, Harappa on the Ravi river and Mohenjodaro on the Indus during the excavations in 1920. The remains of these two cities were part of a large civilization and well developed ancient civilization, which is now called by the historians as ‘Indus Valley Civilization’ or ‘Saraswati Civilization’. Harappan (Sarasvati) civilization of 3100-1900 BC exhibits massive cities, complex agriculture and metallurgy, sophistication of arts and crafts and precision in weights and measures.

They built large buildings, which are mathematically-planned. The city planning

in those ancient cities is comparable to the best of our modern cities. This civilization had a written language and was highly sophisticated. Some of these towns are almost three miles in diameter having thousands of residents. These ancient municipalities had granaries, citadels and even household toilets.

In Mohenjodaro, a mile-long canal has connected the city to the sea and trading ships sailed as far as Mesopotamia. The Indus civilization extended for over half a million square miles across the Indus river valley and though it existed at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Sumer, it far outlasted them. This Sarasvati civilization was a center of trade and for the diffusion of civilization throughout south and west Asia, which often dominated the Mesopotamian region.

Mehrgarh, Harappa, Mohenjodaro, Kalibangan and Lothal are peripheral cities of the great Sarasvati civilization with more than 500 sites along its banks awaiting excavation. The year 4500 B.C. marks Mandhatr’s defeat of Druhyus, driving them to

the west into Iran. 4000-3700 B.C. was the Rig Veda period. In 3730 B.C. the ‘Battle of Ten’ Kings occurred. That was the age of Sudas and his sage advisors, Vasistha and Visvamitra. From 3600 to 3100 B.C. was the late Vedic age during which Yajur, Sama, and Atharva Vedas were composed. 3100 B.C. is the probable date of the Mahabharata, composed by Vyasa. At this time, a tectonic plate shift resulted in river Yamuna, which was a tributary of river Saraswati shifted its course and Saraswati became smaller. It was the beginning of ‘Kali Yuga’.

In 1900 B.C., another tectonic plate shift made Saraswati lose Sutlej. This dried up Sarasvati, causing a massive exodus of people towards the Ganga valley in the east. Whence arose the classical civilization of India. Post-Harappan civilization 1900-1000 BC shows the abandonment of the Harappan towns owing to ecological and river changes, but without a real break in the continuity of the culture. There was a decentralization and relocation in which the same basic agricultural and artistic traditions continue, along with a few significant urban sites like Dwaraka. This gradually develops into

Power when you need it most

An innovative 4.0-litre V8 TFSI engine sets the technology which

enhances efficiency, power and torque, making it capable of taking you from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds. However, high performance doesn’t necessa ily equate to higher fuel consumption. Advanced cylinder-on-demand technology automatically shuts down four of eight cylinders when they’re not needed – for example when coasting at constant speed on the motorway or in city traffic – so you’ll benefit from the efficiency and low emissions of a car with a much smaller engine. But once you reach the open road, the full power of the V8 engine is ready and waiting

Using the vehicle’s navigation data, Matrix LED technology can even anticipate corners, adjusting LEDs as you negotiate the bend. The result is a much wider visual range, benefitting both you and other road users. Dynamic sweeping indicators complete the striking look both at the front and rear.

Feng shui, the Chinese version of Vaastu.

INDIAN

INDIAN VAASTU CORNER

What exactly is feng shui?

It’s a practice based on the idea that our homes are a mirror of what’s happening

inside us, says Brophy. The purpose of feng shui is to get your environment in alignment with who you are and where you want to go—to harmonize your energy with your home’s energy.

How do you do that?By carefully considering what you bring in. how you arrange your rooms, and how you maintain the place. Everything has energy, even inanimate objects. Feng shui helps guide that energy and let it flow freely through your home.

What’s one instant living-room trick? Move a favorite item to a prominent spot. When you walk into the room and see

something that brings you joy, you, in turn, will send joy back into the space.

Let’s move to the bedroom. Overall tips? It’s best to have an interplay of masculine and feminine details.

What do you mean?

For example, a bed that feels solid but sumptuous, maybe a wood bed frame

that has an upholstered headboard. Or gorgeous silk drapes paired with a straight roman shade. This contrast ensures

Where should guests sit? If you watch people walk into a waiting room or a restaurant, they choose a place where they feel safe—with their backs to the wall. It’s nice to let dinner

For example, a bed that feels solid but sumptuous, maybe a wood bed frame that has an upholstered headboard. Or gorgeous silk drapes paired with a straight roman shade. This contrast ensures

guests sit with a wall behind them, as opposed to an open doorway or windows.

Mirrors are significant in feng shui. Why? They can do all kinds of tricks, like recirculate energy and enhance natural light. They draw attention to what they reflect, so if a mirror has an unpleasant view, move it. Hang mirrors high enough that seated guests aren’t stuck looking at themselves.

How do you get that calm, feng shui feel? It’s a combination of safety, with an enveloping bed; coziness, with soft materials; and symmetry, with table lamps and nightstands that create a bookend effect. The bed feels like a little room within a room.

It seems like there are a lot of rules about the bedroom. It’s hard to rest with too much active energy around you. You have to be

aware, for example, of what electricity is running behind your bed. Try to minimize it with a battery-operated alarm clock instead of an electric one. Turn off your phone at night and keep it out of the room. No laptop or computer near the bed. An hour before you go to sleep, stop looking at it.

Is it true that you shouldn’t store anything under the bed?

Right. Stuff under the bed sends out energy all night long. The bedroom is

a private space, and it’s important to honor that. You need to protect your bed.

Telangana festival of pomp

A day after Eid, the month-long Bonalu takes off with a colorful

start in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The unique, local festival of Telangana region is marked by colorful display of traditions and customs. During this regional festival of Telangana state, Goddess Mahakali is worshiped and the event is usually celebrated amidst huge crowds of locals, visitors and officials

Origin of Bonalu festival. The regional festival of Bonalu began in 1813, when Plague disease broke out in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secuderabad to take thousands of lives. After learning about this, a military battalion of Hyderabad that was deployed to Ujjan prior to the epidemic, offered prayers to goddess at Mahakali Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. They decided to install the idol of Mahakali back in their city, if the people were saved from the epidemic. It is believed that Goddess Mahakali killed the epidemic and the

military battalion came back to install an idol of goddess Mahakali. Since then it has become a tradition to offer bonalu to Mother Goddess Mahakali every year.

Other belief is that in Aashada masam or the period from late June to August, Goddess Mahakali comes back to her parental home and thus, it is the time to celebrate.

The Ritual during Bonalu festival

OBonalu is celebrated across twin cities in aashada masam. Every

year lakhs of devotees assemble to worship Goddess Mahakali. The bonalu celebrations are held at the temple at Golconda Fort in first Sunday, at Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad and Balkampet Yellamma temple in Balkampet in second Sunday, at the

pochamma and katta maisamma temple of chilkalguda and the Matheswari temple of Lal Darwaza in Old City of Hyderabad in third Sunday. Among other temples where bonalu is celebrated are Muthyalamma temple in Shah Ali Banda and Akkanna Madanna temple in Haribowli.

Custom during BonaluDuring the feast, women dresses up in traditional sarees and wear jewels and

accessories. It is the time for young girls and teenagers to drape half saree or lehenga cholis, adding grace to the event. To honor the goddess Mahakali, some women in trance dance in rhythm to drum beats, balancing pots or bonam on their heads. Earlier people used to sacrifice a male buffalo to ward off the evil spirits, but now roosters are being sacrificed by few.

As a belief, people pour water on the feet of women carrying bonam to pacify the spirit. The women with bonam are believed to posses the spirit of Mother Goddess, which is aggressive in nature. As a mark of respect to goddess Mahakali, every group of devotees offer a small colorful, paper structure supported by

sticks, called ‘thottelu’.

Pothuraju at BonaluThe brother of Mother Goddess, Pothuraju dances to the resounding drums and trumpets in front of the procession. Lashing whips, he leads the women dancers who are in trance into the temple. He is considered as a protector to the community.

Usually, a well built, bare-bodied man smeared in turmeric represents Pothuraju in the procession. Pothuraju wears a tightly draped red dhoti, bells on his ankles and vermilion on his forehead, besides tying emerald neem leaves around waists.

Celebration during Bonalu

People celebrate bonalu as a family get together and decorate homes and

streets with neem leaves. Families share the offerings made to goddess Mahakali with relatives and friends. They have a blast with loud music of folk songs of Mother Goddess Mahakali. The Telangana regional festival environment relishes everyone from kids to elders.

Rangam and GhatamAfter a month of the main festival of bonalu in Telangana, Rangam or the Performing the Oracle, is held. This custom is performed when a women invokes goddess Mahakali into her to foretell the future. Rangam follows Ghatam.A copper pot decorated as mother goddess is called Ghatam, which is carried by a priest. Accompanied by drums, Ghatam is taken into procession from first day of bonalu till last day. Bonalu concludes with immersion of ghatam in water. The ghatam of Akkanna Madanna Temple in Haribowli leads the procession, placed on an elephant escorted by mounted horses and models depicting Akkanna and Madanna. Ghatams from other popular temples of Mhakali in twin cities assemble here. The sparkling procession ends in the evening with immersion of Ghatams at Nayapul.

Baahubali Review

Raja mouli’s Indian bilingual epic

historical fiction film

Special Movie

Page 105: Wishesh magazine August 2015

AUGUST 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

To start off with, Bahubali has a lot of inspiration story wise, from the great epic Mahabharata, where the focus is on acquiring the kingdom between family members.nough.

''

''Bahubali, is one of India’s most

expensive film in terms of both thinking and royalty. The movie has been directed by S S Rajamouli who has taken the privilege to give Indian movies a big lift from its previous standards. The grand visuals and the brilliant film-making of a fictional tale of royalty and its associated setting clearly justifies this statement. This is the first version of Baahubali and the second is expected in 2016 as revealed in the credits.

To start off with, Bahubali has a lot of inspiration story wise, from the great epic Mahabharata, where the focus is on acquiring the kingdom between family members. For a generation that concentrates more on social awakening, relationship management and contemporary excuses, this film takes the rocket high new experience which is imperial in itself. The team makes it a point to take the audience to the world of Kings, queens, war, battle and not to forget, breathtaking sceneries and visualistic treats. The film that is touted to be shot for, over and above 3 years is split into two parts and grips the audience to curiosity and sinks them into the world of surrealistic visuals.

When it comes to casting, the movie has a strong star cast and is chosen with extra care. It is definitely not easy to pull off a king’s role with ease. Being said that, Prabhas plays a perfect gentleman’s character which has a transition in role as

and when the story flows. His intro is colossal that is accompanied by deafening applause. The man suits his role every bit and his chiseled body that captures quite a few frames, would surely be the envy of every man and a dream for every woman. He is quite commendable in action, emotions and romance too; a perfect combination indeed! Rana Daggubati gives a tough fight to Prabhas in terms of his looks, but has a little in this version. With a beautiful appearance, Tamannah is seen playing a pivotal role that displays both her svelte beauty and leash of braveness. Her character is solid and definitely gripping.

However, there is not much that one can see of Anushka in the first part, but we are hinted about her large screen space in the second part through the storyline. As far as other characters, Ramya Krishnan as Sivagami plays a foremost role followed by Satyaraj, who has pulled the character with ease and comfort. S S Rajamouli has a strong selected star cast that brings life to

their characters and give each other a tough competition. In terms of technical sense, Bahubali strikes the highest chords in Indian cinema. The CG works and the extraordinary sets and are completely in line with what was promised from the trailer and posters. The avalanche sequences and the battle are an example of this. The extravagant hard work and sweat dropped to bring out every little frame is flagrant that demands a royal salute to the entire team.

Though we have the obvious efforts that we see on the screen, there are a few glitches here and there which are worth a miss. The downside of the movie is when the first half takes its own sweet time to unfurl, which could have been more crisp. For fans of Anushka, it was disheartening to see her in such a bad looking shape which was also short lived.

Verdict-Summing it up, Baahubali is a terrific testimony to what Indian films can do in terms of grand and flamboyant film making and would surely be a landmark film in the annals of Indian film history. Do watch it with your family to enjoy the success efforts taken by the team. Kudos team! Kudos!

The ‘Manohari’ number in the second half strikes out as a sore thumb but is choreographed quite well.
