Sharing the Gospel and God's Divine ElectionFriday, May 08, 2009EVANGELISM AND GOD'S SOVERIGNTY from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

This message is the second lesson on this subject, and the first part of the second10

Page 13: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

lesson. (I am in the process making available the first lesson)

TWO VIEWS OF GOD’S WORK IN SALVATION AND MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY

CAUTION: HEAR BOTH VIEWS TO MAKE THE CONNECTION.

The fact remains that God in the gospel really does offer and promise justification and lifeto “whosoever will.” Romans 10:13. As God commands all men everywhere to repent, soGod invites all men everywhere to come to Christ and find mercy.

Definition of Evangelism:

1. Is a task appointed to all God’s people everywhere. It is the task of communicatingthe message from the God to bring about salvation to mankind.

2. The message begins with information and ends with an invitation. (I am not talkingabout a church invitation at th end of the service)

3. The information concerns the work of God of making His Son a just right Saviourfor sinners.

4. The invitation is God’s summons to mankind generally to come to the Saviour andfind life.God commands all men everywhere to repent, and promises forgiveness andsalvation to all who do. (Acts 17:30)

5. The Christian is sent into the world as Christ’s speak and Christ’s ambassador, tosent forth this message as far and wide as he can. It’s a duty, it’s a command, it’s aprivilege to tell people about Christ.

HOW IF THE ABOVE IS TRUE, AND IT IS, HOW IS ALL THIS AFFECTED BY OURBELIEF IN THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD?

Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 01:53PM (-05:00)

Sharing the Gospel & God's Divine Election PartTwoSaturday, May 09, 2009HOW TO VIEW GOD'S SOVEREIGNITY WITH EVANGELISM from charles e. whisnan ton Vimeo.

It is true that God has from all eternity chosen whom He will save. It is true that Christcame specifically to save those whom the Father had given Him. But it is also true thatChrist offers Himself freely to all men as their Savior, and guarantees to bring to gloryeveryone who trust in Him as such. Note how He Himself deliberately put side by sidethese two thoughts: John 6:37-38.

Christ means who He says, no less when He undertakes to save all who will trust Himthan when He undertakes to save all whom the Father has given Him.

11

Page 14: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

(4) or does it affect the responsibility of the sinner for his reaction to the gospel.

The fact remains that a man who rejects Christ in that way becomes the cause of his owncondemnation. The Bible never says that sinners miss heaven because they are notelect, but because they neglect the great salvation and because they will not repent andbelieve. Ezk 18:31, John 5:40.

II THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD IN GRACE GIVES US OUR ONLY HOPEOFSUCCESS IN EVANGELISM.

Let me say on the other hand, evangelism would be pointless apart from the Sovereigntyof God. Why? Because of the spiritual inabililty of man in sin Paul put it this way: ICorinthians 2:14 and Romans 8:7

• 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they arefoolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spirituallydiscerned. 1 Cor 2:147 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law ofGod, neither indeed can be. Romans 8:7

Here is what Paul is saying: Man’s failure, as a matter of fact. It is a necessity of nature, something certain and inevitable and universal and unalterable, because it is in man todo otherwise than fail.

1. And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins Eph 2:12. Wholly incapacitated for any positive response to God’s word3. Deaf to God’s speech blind to God’s revelation4. Not influenced to God’s inducement

Why? Eph 2:2 Satan is active in this matter. 2 Corin 4:4 4 In whom the god of this worldhath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel ofChrist, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR REACHING PEOPLE FOR CHRIST?

It means quite simply, that evangelism, described as we have described it, cannotpossibly succeed.

1. Can we by our talking break the power of Satan in man’s life?

Sideshow: God, Satan, and Miss USAWednesday, May 13, 2009

Theses two girls didn't win Miss USA, they didn'tpose for girlie sideshow, or magazines, but theyglorifed the Lord in their life. Christians are not tobe in girlie sideshows.

The Girlie Sideshow: God, Satan, and Miss USAin Sin City

Carrie Prejean, 21, may have lost the Miss USAcrown to Kristen Dalton, but God was guiding herthroughout that fateful girlie show April 19 in SinCity, when she was put to the question by PerezHilton over gay marriage. So said Carrieyesterday on James Dobson's Focus on theF a m i l y r a d i o s h o w

( h t t p : / / w w w . f o c u s o n t h e f a m i l y . c o m / ) .I am sure the Devil is not at all disappointed that Miss Carrie is a "Chrisitan", and that sheis against gay marriage. If a Christian can pose for girlie magazines, and dress as shedoes, that is okay christianity to the devil.

"I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question," said Carrie, who spoke out against gay marriage. "And then God was in my head and in my heart, saying, 'Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me.' And I knew . . . that itwasn't about winning. It was about being true to my convictions." Now of course when thestatement of Carrie was said, you can be sure the media is going to use it in the negative. 13

Page 16: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

Of course they in their natural minds willhave no idea what she was talking about.Even on Fox Shepherd Smith was clueless.Miss USA is worldly, and in my opinion istotally sinful. Well, it appeal to the flesh, and eyes for sure. For heaven sake's Iremember saying, "I don't think yourdaughter should be in the cheerleaders halftime group." I got in a lot of trouble overthat statement. I just do not believe weshould be half dressed in public and dancelike we are come on. Sex sells. The natureof man like to see women's flesh. Of courseto many this practice is harmless. And I am

sure we can over come our youthful behaviour.

• Satan is not fearful of external conformity to rule. Not even to the externalconformity of the rule of Christ--provided there is no cross.

• Satan does not mind family values--as long as what you ultimately value is thefamily.

Russell Moore's excellent talk, "The Devil Votes Christian Values: Why We’re Tempted tobe Glorified Satanists Rather than Crucified Followers.

• Satan does not mind social justice--as long as you see justice as most importantlysocial.

• Satan does not tremble at a Christian worldview. He will let you have a Christianworldview as long as your ultimate goal is viewing the world.

If he can just bypass the cross--and get to the kingdom apart from the cross--then he willhave everything that he wants.

• Pastor: Satan doesn't mind if you preach on the decrees of God with fervor andpassion every single week--provided that you do not ever preach the gospel of thecross.

• Homeschooling Mom: Satan does not mind if you teach your children all the booksof the Bible and all the Ten Commandments and all of the catechism--provided youdo not teach them the gospel of a bloody cross.. . .

Satan will let you\ get what it is that you want, no matter what it is--sanctity of marriage, environmental protection, orphan care, all of these good and wonderful things--he willallow you to gain those things provided you do not preach and proclaim and live throughthe power of a cross that cancels his power of condemnation. He so fears the gospel of aChrist crucified and raised from the dead that he is willing to surrender his entire empirejust to appease the threat of it. Here Russell Moore tells us The Devil Votes ChristianValues: Why We’re Tempted to be Glorified Satanists Rather than Crucified Followers. The Devil likes or is willing to go along with Christian values as long as we do not bring inthe Cross and the Resurrection.Posted by Charles E. PREACHING AND THE LISTENERS?Thursday, May 14, 2009

• Remember that happy listeners may mean sermon failure. Our goal is not to makelisteners happy with us. Our goal is to faithfully present, explain and apply the Bibletext to their lives. What if the text convicts, or prods, or pokes, or makes downrightuncomfortable? What if it shines a light in a dark place in their life and they don’t likewhat they see? What if their dissatisfaction toward you and your preaching is a verypositive sign of the word getting through? Be careful not to misapply this, butsometimes knowing that listeners were offended by your preaching may be the bestfeedback that you are doing your job well. Preaching is not about presentingyourself for a popularity contest (even if some churches make it feel like that!)

A DAY WITH CHARITY WAS GREATMonday, May 18, 2009

I was at the desk today, and Charity said,"are you going to move the tables today?"And without thinking I said, "Yes." Whatwas I thinking? So within minutes I wentdown stairs and begin to take the kitchentable out and going to replace with the tablein the dinning room. Then Charity wanted totake the love seat out of the bedroom andput in the new sitting room, which was theold dinning room, which was the TV room.So the work began. What a morning.Charity said, "I am glad that you listen to

the Pastor's message on Sunday." I had to remember what I had taught. Am Iresponsible to listen to what I preach? Then later we went to Chillicothe for dinner at Red Lobster. Then to J.C. Penny's where Ibought two shirts. Then to Sam's to buy contact lens. A great 80 mile round trip and timewith Charity and back home in three hours.

THREE ADVERBS AND THREE ADJECTIVES OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIPI THESSALONIANS 2:11PASTOR/TEACHER CHARLES E. WHISNANTMAY 17, 2009

PAUL IS TELLING US IN THIS SECTION THAT WE SHOULD MODEL AND TEACHAND CHARGE THOSE WHO ARE UNDER OUR SPIRIUTAL LEADERRSHIP

HOW ARE WE ABLE TO LIVE WITH STRENGTH, COURAGE, LITTLE FLINCHINGFROM A MEASURABLE RISK AND THE CHALLENGES WE FACE IN LIFE?

1 Be sure of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Practice the presence of the Spirit2 Understanding that as a Christian you have a just cause to live as Christ3 You understand the reality of the unfailing sovereignty of God

THOSE OF US WHO ARE IN SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP NEED TO BE:

You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly webehaved toward you believers; just as you know how we were exhorting and encouragingand imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, so that you would walkin a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. (2:10–12

1A MODELING (PATTERN) STEP ONE THE LIFE OF A SPIRITUAL FATHER, LEADER(Deut 4:9, prov. 13:24, eph 6:4, col. 3:21, Hebrews 12:9

1B HOLY:20

Page 23: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

1. My life before God.2. My duty before God was conformed to God’s character.3. This is the fabric of the believer’s testimony as God sees it, not man.4. God’s wants 100% of our lives.5. No one sees your devotional life except God.

2B JUST: RIGHTEOUSLY.

1. This is the man-directive.2. This is what you see.3. This has to do with your integrity.4. The fabric of your character.5. Established reputation.6. A good testimony.7. People know your number.8. The testimony in the church not in the world.9. People trust you.

10. People believe what you say.11. When you get up and give a testimony, people will listen to what you say.

3B UNBLAMEABLY:

1. Behaving ourselves as Christians justly.2. We are not like the world models.3. We don’t embarrass Christ in public4. We’re a new breed.5. We’re a different crop6. We have a new nature7. We’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit8. We have a Bible9. Molds our life. Our attitude

10. Our philosophy of life. Our out-look on life11. Our attitude toward life12. If our life is UGLY, people will say “they must have an ugly book.”

2A TEACHING (PRECEPTS) is necessary as a spiritual father, leader.

THREE PHASES OF THE MINISTER’S PREACHING

“just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one ofyou as a father would his own children,” 1 THESSALONIANS 2:11

1B EXHORTING: to encourage, to raise somebody's spirits. –

• from parakaleo, literally “to call alongside; and is related to the noun parakletos,“one who comes alongside; which is one of the titles for the Holy Spirit.

• Exhortation leads one to do a thing willingly; consolation, to do it joyfully."exhorted," the Greek includes the additional idea of comforting and advocatingone's cause: "encouragingly exhorted." 21

Page 24: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

2B COMFORTED motivating

• Encouraging (paramutheomai), meaning to encourage in the sense of comfort andconsolation, is so critical in assisting toward spiritual growth because of the manyobstacles and failures Christians can experience.

• A friendly persuasion, touching of feeling so leading the heart to Christ and Histruth.

3B CHARGE: imploring

• Imploring is the Greek participle marturomenoi, which is usually translated“testifying”, or “witnessing”; is related to the word martyr because so many faithfulwitnesses died for their boldness.

We are summoned to witness and warn and admonish to the fact that if they did notfollow the course laid out for them, they, as disobedient children would receive from afather, could expect to receive spiritual discipline from the apostle.

Why All the Best Preachers Are--What aConcept!--TheologicalTuesday, May 19, 2009Why All the Best Preachers Are--What a Concept!--Theological:

• "The bones and marrow of the sermon are composed of theology. Yet theologicalpreaching is rare. Listeners fear that too much theology will make the sermonimpractical. Many preachers shy away from theological content. Aware of the smallwindow of opportunity given to capture the interest of the audience, preachers aretempted to rush to application. The result is a sermon that begins with the need ofthe audience, touches lightly on the biblical text, and then moves to concreteimplication. In the process, the sermon skips the important step of identifying andstating theological principles upon which the practical application is based. HaddonRobinson has wryly observed: 'More heresy is preached in application than in Bibleexegesis.'"

From my personal experience, not many preachers preach theological in my circle ofpreachers. So I have changeded my circle of preachers. While I love all my preachersfriends, and they all love the Lord, many of them just like to preach and leave out thetheology. All the preachers I know from this camp, would say they believe they arepreaching the Word of God. They just like to leave out the theological aspect of it in theirpreaching. Some started out wanting to preach theological and then got caught up inwanting to get more people saved and have a bigger church, so they cut out thetheological teaching, and went with the pop - cultural - easy listening - twenty minutesermon. And they go their bigger church attendance. I am so glad over the last years toget to know many preachers who are totally committed to preaching from a theologicalconcept.

• I have often heard people say, "Charles is a teacher, not a preacher."The truth is all preaching is teaching what one believes about what the Bible is teaching.

1. THE KEY IS LEARNING WHAT THE BIBLE IS TEACHING.I am in my 45 years of learning what the Bible is saying.

22

Page 25: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

And almost every day, I am humbled by what I just learned today.

Maybe we should try to preach or teach so it doesn't sound so theological!

Charles Spurgeon once observed

• that the young preacher is primarily concerned with matters of style while thosewith more experience tend to focus their attention on content. In effect, the youngerpreacher asks, "How shall I say it?" while the older preacher thinks, "What shall Isay?" The theological preacher must ask both questions. It is by giving carefulattention to the theology of the text and the need of the audience that the preacherlearns what must be said about it and how to say it.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, among the speakers at the news conference, called it an"astonishing breakthrough."

The story of the fossil find will be shown on History, which is owned by A&E TelevisionNetworks. A book also will be published.Hurum saw nothing wrong with the heavy publicity which preceded the research'spublication Tuesday in the scientific journal PLOS (Public Library of Science) One."That's part of getting science out to the public, to get attention. I don't think that's sowrong," Hurum said.

Paleontologists found a rare prehistoric pregnant turtle in a remote area of southern UtahMay 9. The fossil is just the second ever found to still have a clutch of eggs inside. Here,a technician prepares to run the 75-million-year-old fossil through a scanner.

Because the skeleton is so remarkably complete, scientists believe it will provide awindow into primate evolution. The animal was a juvenile female that scientists believedied at about 9 or 10 months."She tells so many stories. We have just started the research on this fabulous specimen,"said Jorn Hurum, of the University of Oslo Natural History Museum, one of the scientistsreporting the find. 23

With the Cavaliers' hopes for another trip tothe NBA Finals fading fast, LeBron Jamesrose up for an absolutely critical 3-pointeras the final second ticked off the clockFriday night.

He took the last shot this time. A twisting,off-balance, miracle shot. A 3-pointer for

the last of his 35 points that he released with less than one second on the clock andrattled through the rim to give the Cavs a 96-95 victory in Game 2, evening the series at1-1.

What a game. I get a call from Charity from Union Mills to pick her up, its 10 p.m.Cavaliers had a 23 point lead, only to lose it.

SPORTS COLLECTIONS AND THE GOSPELMonday, May 25, 2009

The view of our houseThe yard that I cut isall the green. For six years I push a smallmower. But really loved it.

SOMETIMES YOU WONDER WHYPEOPLE WHOM HEAR YOU PREACH ORTEACH, SEEM TO JUST BRUSH THEMESSAGE OFF. WELL THERE IS AREASON FOR THAT..................

•Now, when we preach the gospel, unless you have spiritual life, you cannot feedupon it; and if you were to come to the communion table, unless you were truly aliveunto God, you might eat the bread, and drink the wine, but with real spiritual food, the body of Christ, and the blood of Christ, you could have nothing to do. We do notgive food to people in order to make them live. That would be a useless experiment;but, because they are alive, they take food in order to sustain and nourish the lifewhich is already in them. Always recollect, dear friends, that the best spiritual foodin the world is useless to those who are spiritually dead; and one very essential partof the gospel is that truth which our Savior so plainly taught, "Ye must be born 25

again." All attempts at feeding the soul are of no use until the new birth has beenexperienced; even that precious, priceless bread of life cannot be assimilatedunless the soul has been quickened by the Spirit of God.

Reality of Church Ministry Comes to LifeFriday, May 29, 2009

The reality of church ministry comes to life.

This past Wednesday night in our 6 p.m. membership meeting at Rivers of Joy BaptistChurch was just for that purpose. Getting members to view their thinking about theirministry in the church. Generally as Pastor/Leader/Elder, I lay out my opinions and ideaand what I think. But what I felt a really neat idea, "What Are You Thinking?" So I startedwith Jimmy and Lois and move to Stephanie, then Linda, skip Bill and went to Bob then toJohn and Peggy, (well I skippe Peggy) then to Frankie and Danny, and so forth, thencame back to Bill, then to Charity and Dorothy, then to Bill and Mary, etc.

Really its good to listen to what members are thinking about the ministry that they areinvolved in. Its good to hear concerns and ideas and thoughts. Too often I believemembers may think they are not heard.

27

Page 30: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

The meeting was very good and produced some good thoughts.

Then 7 p.m. came, and we were just about half way through the process, and before youknew it, the time was 8 p.m. So what about my lesson for tonight? I want have to study ashard the next week. Sometimes its good to listen and not talk. Who said that?

Pastors have this fault of sugar coating problems and concerns. They often speak of thegood points and hid the problems the church has. This is a fault that hurts the progress ofthe church.

In order to get ahead of what was before we must deal with the past. We have a future ifwe are honest about the events of the past.

Churches that do not deal honestly with themselves and do not stop of correct andadjust, will fall into the same pattern all over again.

Therefore in this brief post, I am saying, ROJBC and its leadership and members aremaking progess in their purpose to make our place a place that will bring honor to theLord.

LETING DOWN YOUR SLEEVES IS GREATSaturday, May 30, 2009Brief Summary of Sunday's Message from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

The video is from this morning at thechurch, (I did not have the lights on)

THE JOY TO BE ABLE TO LET DOWNYOUR SLEEVES WITHOUT BEINGMISUNDERSTOOD.TAKING A LOOK INTO THE EMOTIONSOF PAULI THESSALONIANS 2:13-14Pastor/Teacher Charles E. Whisnant

PAUL seems very much at home when he is writing to the church at Thessalonica. In hisletters to that favored people he unveils his inmost feelings. He is rather apt to do sowhen he feels himself quite at ease: for Paul is by no means a man shut up withinhimself, who is never at home to any one. When he is in a drawn-out conflict with anunappreciative people he keeps himself to razor-sharp words and strong arguments; butwhen he is writing to a loving, attached, affectionate church, he lets them have the28

Page 31: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

explanation of his heart, and he lays exposed before them his secret emotions. I feel as ifwe were interviewing Paul today as if we were all sitting in a room with him, and Silas, and Timothy, and were hearing their private conversation. We are come to a round-tableconference with them, and we are listening to their talk about the ministry which God hadcommitted to them.

Even in these two verses we hear of how these holy preachers loved the gospel, told outthe gospel, and saw that gospel take hold of their hearers' hearts.

When you look back over the places of ministry in the pastorate, as my mind brings upthose places of service, it’s with joy that I don’t need to be restrained about my conduct inthose places. In each place the experience with friends still fill my soul with joy. Theexperience with the youth, the children, and adults are so good. I love to tell the stories. To be able to the connections we had with friends in Roanoke, Virginia, Bible BaptistSeminary in Arlington Texas, Wooster, Ohio, Minford, Ohio, West Portsmouth, Ohio,Connersville, Indiana, Mansfield, Ohio, Altoona, Kansas, and perhaps in Lexington,Kentucky.

It is with a joyful enthusiasm to be the pastor of a church where one may be able tospeak with some transparent, as a pastor, to be able from the beginning to open yourheart without fear that you are going to be wounded.. Pastors usually have to be like aman who wears an armor throughout life, who hardly is able to move his plate of steel, unless somebody should wound him in an unguarded place.

There is not place better than have a church were you can feel yourself at home as abrother among brethren, and as safe as a father among his sons and daughters since heis not afraid of being misunderstood.

To be able to let your sleeves down a while is a joy.

Paul was like that here in our text. He was able to feel at home, he was able to freelyspeak with peace, and with pleasure his thoughts about the folks at Thessalonica. Hecould from the first day to his last day, just say, “As you know,” and they did know.

AND FOR THIS REASON WE ALSO CONSTANTLY THANK GOD THAT WHEN YOURECEIVED FROM US THE WORD OF GOD'S MESSAGE YOU ACCEPTED IT NOT ASTHE WORD OF MEN:This Sunday at Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, in Minford Ohio the message from IThessalonians 2:13Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 08:04AM (-05:00)

EVANGELISM, PASSION FOR THE LOST,AND THE ELECT

Some in the Fundamentalist group, (some)believe if you believe God saves people, you will not have the desire to preach theGospel of Jesus Christ. How silly is that? Some believe that God's doesn't know whois going to be saved. How silly is that? Some believe God knows who is going tobe saved, but He doesn't interfer with whata man does in the matter of his salvation? How silly is that?

35

Page 38: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

• Some believe if you believe God has an elect group of people who are going to besaved, that leaves out all the other people who would want to be saved? How sillythat that?

A controversialist once said, “If I thought God had a chosen people, I should not preach>"That is the very reason why I do preach. What would make him inactive is the mainspringof my earnestness. If the Lord had not a people to be saved, I should have little to cheerme in the ministry.

• I believe that God will save his own elect, and I also believe that, if I do not preachthe gospel, the blood of men will be laid at my door.

Our Saviour has bidden us to preach the gospel to every creature; he has not said,“Preach it only to the elect;” and though that might seem to be the most logical thing forus to do, yet, since he has not been pleased to stamp the elect in their foreheads, or toput any distinctive mark upon them, it would be an impossible task for us to perform;whereas, when we preach the gospel to every creature, the gospel makes its owndivision, and Christ’s sheep hear his voice, and follow him.Posted by Charles E. The Preachers Message Keeps In View?Saturday, June 13, 2009 “Many preachers are tempted to identify themselves with the congregation in preaching, rather than with God. This may be the most significant reason for their feeling ill at easein speaking to their congregation in the second person. Such preachers do not want theirpeople to get the impression that the preacher is holier than them — for preachers knowthey are not . . . If a man, even for the most noble of motives, identifies himself primarilywith the congregation in preaching, rather than with God, the best he will be able to do isspeak as one sinner to other sinners about God. He will not be able to speak from God tothem” (Wagner, Tongues Aflame, p. 74).Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 05:33AM (-05:00)

“For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in ChristJesus: for you also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they haveof the Jews.:”

followers -- Greek, "imitators." Divine working is most of all seen and felt in affliction.

in Judea -- The churches of Judea were naturally the patterns to other churches, ashaving been the first founded, and that on the very scene of Christ's own ministry.Reference to them is specially appropriate here, as the Thessalonians, with Paul and42

Silas, had experienced from Jews in their city persecutions Act 17:5-9 similar to thosewhich "the churches in Judea" experienced from Jews in that country.

in Christ Jesus -- not merely "in God"; for the synagogues of the Jews (one of which theThessalonians were familiar with, Acts 17:1 were also in God. But the Christian churchesalone were not only in God, as the Jews in contrast to the Thessalonian idolaters were, but also in Christ, which the Jews were not.

of your own countrymen -- including primarily the Jews settled at Thessalonica, fromwhom the persecution originated, and also the Gentiles there, instigated by the Jews;thus, "fellow countrymen" (the Greek term, according to Herodian, implies, not theenduring relation of fellow citizenship, but sameness of country for the time being),including naturalized Jews and native Thessalonians, stand in contrast to the pure "Jews"in Judea Matt 10:36. It is an undesigned coincidence, that Paul at this time was sufferingpersecutions of the Jews at Corinth, whence he writes Acts 18:5,6,12; naturally his letterwould the more vividly dwell on Jewish bitterness against Christians.

even as they --Heb 10:32-34. There was a likeness in respect to the nation from whichboth suffered, namely, Jews, and those their own countrymen; in the cause for which, and in the evils which, they suffered, and also in the steadfast manner in which theysuffered them. Such sameness of fruits, afflictions, and experimental characteristics ofbelievers, in all places and at all times, is a subsidiary evidence of the truth of the Gospel.

Any Appearance of Evolution is Wrong.Thursday, June 18, 2009 I am teaching a series of lessons from Genesis, dealing with Creation verse Evolution. Iwill post the first part of the message later tonight. Maybe. I have worked on this projectall day, off and on. Now I am upload the first part on to Vimeo.com.

I stand on this position about Creation:

• Now from that foundation that we have laid in our teaching over the last severalweeks, we must bring to a close that any appearance of evolution is a contradictionand a rejection of the apparent revelation of Scripture, and I mean anyoutline...whether it comes from an atheistic evolutionist like Julian Huxley, orwhether it comes from a theistic evolutionist like Hugh Ross, any appearance ofevolution is a contradiction and rejection of the comprehensible revelation ofScripture which indicates that somewhere around 6000 years ago God created theentire universe as we know it in six 24-hour days.

Creation is a Fact Supported by Scripture.Thursday, June 18, 2009What Have Learned About Creation So Far from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

I STAND BY THESE STATEMENTS AS I HAVE STUDIED THE TEXT IN GENESIS 1:1-13.

1. God created out of nothiung, without any preexisting material, the heaven and theearth.

2. This creation happened in a period of one week of normal days about 6000 years.3. The entire creation was mature and aged at the instant of its creation.4. Death did not exist, nor did any corrupt influences, and the creation was good.5. Death and corruption entered the creations for the first time at the Fall of Adam.6. Prior to the time Adam and Eve sinned in disobedience of God there was no death.7. Science is not a principle for interpreting Genesis or any other passage for that

matter.8. There's only one source of the account of origins and that is the Bible, the Word of

God.9. It's hard for people to get a handle on this because science has reigned supreme on

the throne of contemporary thinking.10. Evolution has been a given. In fact it's become an absolute in our society.11. It is a false theory that the sediments that have been building up along the layers of

the Grand Canyon to say the earth is a billion of years old.12. The occurrence of meteors in sedimentary rock failed to turn up one single case of a

meteorite being found anywhere in any geologic column.44

Angels Were Created Beings by GodFriday, June 19, 2009Why Do I Believe Angels Were Created On Day One from Charles E. Whisnant onVimeo.

I always believed that Angels were created by God. What I was not sure of was when? Ibelieved God before the creation of earth, God had created angels. For some reason Ibelieved this could have been thousands of years before He created the earth.

Well in this lesson I address this issue. So listen to the video and see what you thinkabout this matter of angels.

We all have opinions about what we think the Bible is teaching about Creation. I willaddress this point in another post.

But the question was put to me, So what makes you believe what you say about Creationis correct? Which is really a good question and really made me think.

A overview of the week forthwithSaturday, June 20, 2009The week always begins with Sunday. And this past Sunday was so good for Charity andI. Our 40th wedding anniversary was on the 14th. So we thought Sunday would be agreat day to have a celebration. Since we have had 40 years of church ministry together, why not have a celebration at church.

Having having our sons and daughter up was so good. We had a great time. The onlystress I had was the preaching, and the special song that Charity and I sung. Its on videoon one of my websites. Several people who love us, said we did well for the first time

together.

The afternoon service was also good. BillBower MC the service, and Bob Templespoke, and then Johnny Edwards gave us amini concert of songs. We were happy tosee so many guest for the day. Whileattendance is great to have, (its good tohave people come) we had fifty six for theday.

On Monday Charity and I had a nice date. That was very nice. One Tuesday thruSaturday, Charity was working at UnionMills.

One Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Iwas at Mex Itali for a few hours. I clean offthe tables, made the best cream butteranywhere, twice this week, I also have agreat time talking to many of my goodfriends. Ira Fowler is one of my best at workfriends who comes in to eat everyday. Ireally work there to see my good friends. Ienjoy working at Mex Itali, and thankful for

the time I work. While that is true, I am looking forwardto leaving in October, at the latest.

I took off Thursday to take a day off just to hang out athouse and do a little work. That was really fun.

On Wednesday we had a great service at Rivers ofJoy Baptist Church, I had a lesson on Creation. And inthe course of the lesson there were a few questionsas to my knowledge of the subject. And the questionwas ask, "HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARERIGHT?" (Click) So I posted a brief thought on thatidea. More to come on that idea later.I video SundayMorning service, and Wednesday Evening lessons. I

download from the Kodak onto KodakEasyshare softwear, this process takes awhile. Then go over to Vimeo.com and theydownload from Kodak. This process takesfor ever it seems. About three hours per 20minutes of lesson. Thus Sunday Morningwhich was the shortest message in myhistory was just one video. WednesdayNight which is normal was 55 minutes andit took three video.

I have posted on Grow By Learning thisweek as well. Also over on Live Journal "For Me To Live Is Christ, website.46

WHAT IS MEANT BY EXPOSITORYPREACHINGMonday, June 22, 2009What Is Expository Purpose Preaching from Charles E. Whisnant on Vimeo.

A FOOTNOTE ON THIS IDEA OF PREACHING:

Some people here at ROJBC are new to preaching. Some simply stop by to see what’sgoing on. Some have little or no experience with what we mean by preaching. I think itwill help you listen to this message (and others) if I say a word about preaching.

What we mean by preaching is expository joy.

Preaching As Expository Delight

Expository means that preaching aims to exposit, or explain and apply, the meaning ofthe Bible. Every sermon explains and applies the Bible. The reason for this is that theBible is God’s word, inspired, infallible, profitable—all sixty-six books of it. The preacher’sjob is to minimize his own opinions and deliver the truth of God. Therefore, it is mainlyBible exposition—explanation and application.

47

Page 50: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

And the preacher’s job is to do that in a way that enables us to see that the points he ismaking actually come from the Bible. If they come from the Bible and you can’t see thatthey come from the Bible, your faith will rest on man and not God.

The aim of this exposition is to help you eat and digest some biblical truth that will makeyour spiritual bones more like steel, and double the capacity of your spiritual lungs, andmake the eyes of your heart to be amaze with brilliance with God’s greatness, andawaken the capability of your soul to experience the kinds of spiritual enjoyment youdidn’t even know existed.Preaching is also delight—expository delight. This means that the preacher does not justexplain what’s in the Bible, and the people do not simply understand what he explains, but the preacher and the people rejoice over what is in the Bible as it is being explainedand applied.

Preaching As Worship

Preaching does not come after worship in the order of the service. Preaching is worship. My job is not done if I only see truth and show it to you. The devil could do that—for hisown devious reasons. My job is to see the glory of the truth and to savor it and triumphover it as I explain it to you and apply it for you. That’s one of the differences between alecture and a sermon.

Preaching is not the totality of the church. And if all you have is preaching, you don’t havethe church. A church is a body of people who minister to each other. Part of whatpreaching does is equip us for that. God has created the church, so that the churchflourishes through preaching. That’s why Paul gave young pastor Timothy one of themost serious, exalted charges in all the Bible in 2 Timothy 4:1-2: “I charge you in thepresence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by hisappearing and his kingdom: preach the word.”

If you are used to a twenty-minute, immediately practical, relaxed talk, the understandingof preaching that I just described doesn’t lead there. I won’t preach twenty minutes buttwice that long; I do not aim to be immediately practical but eternally helpful; and thecondition of my soul is not relaxed but standing vigilantly on the precipice of eternityspeaking to people any of whom this week could go over the edge.

The Suffering For Christ's Righteousness SeenWednesday, June 24, 2009They Suffered for Christ from Charles E. Whisnant on Vimeo.

NOW THE OUTLINE OF TODAY’S MESSAGE

48

Page 51: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

1A THEY BELIEVED THE RIGHT THINGS: THEY RECEIVED THE WORD OF GOD ASTHE WORD OF GOD AND NOT AS WORDS OF MEN

2A THEY HONORED THE SAINTS BY FOLLOWING THEM

3A THEY PERSEVERED IN SUFFERING AND STOOD AGAINST THE OPPOSITION.

They kept their faith in the teaching of paul, and protected themselves from anything thatwould cause them to lose their faith or cause them to fall out of use for the lord JesusChrist

14 “For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are inChrist Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as theyhave of the Jews:”

in Judea -- The churches of Judea were naturally the patterns to other churches, ashaving been the first founded, and that on the very scene of Christ's own ministry.Reference to them is specially appropriate here, as the Thessalonians, with Paul andSilas, had experienced from Jews in their city persecutions (Acts 17:5-9) similar to thosewhich "the churches in Judea" experienced from Jews in that country.

in Christ Jesus -- not merely "in God"; for the synagogues of the Jews (one of which theThessalonians were familiar with, Acts 17:1 were also in God. But the Christian churchesalone were not only in God, as the Jews in contrast to the Thessalonian idolaters were, but also in Christ, which the Jews were not.—of your own countrymen -- including primarily the Jews settled at Thessalonica, fromwhom the persecution originated, and also the Gentiles there, instigated by the Jews;thus, "fellow countrymen" (the Greek term, according to Herodian, implies, not theenduring relation of fellow citizenship, but sameness of country for the time being),including naturalized Jews and native Thessalonians, stand in contrast to the pure "Jews"in Judea (Matthew 10:36). It is an undesigned coincidence, that Paul at this time wassuffering persecutions of the Jews at Corinth, whence he writes (Acts 18:5,6,12);naturally his letter would the more vividly dwell on Jewish bitterness against Christians.

even as they -- (Hebrews 10:32-36). There was a likeness in respect to the nation fromwhich both suffered, namely, Jews, and those their own countrymen; in the cause forwhich, and in the evils which, they suffered, and also in the steadfast manner in whichthey suffered them. Such sameness of fruits, afflictions, and experimental characteristicsof believers, in all places and at all times, is a subsidiary evidence of the truth of theGospel.

This church followed the Preachers, they followed the Word and then they followed thechurch at Jerusalem. They patterned their lives after the Church. I patterned this churchafter the “Shepherd’s Conference, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley California.

The pattern of suffering, and persecution.

49

Page 52: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

A great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; PersecutionStrikes the ChurchActs 5:16 — 8:3And they were all scattered throughout Judea and Samaria, except the apostles (Acts8:1).

The time of “favor with all the people” Acts 2:24 is over. Acts traces the Satanic attack onthe church in Jerusalem as the Jewish authorities that killed the Lord Jesus turn againstHis people (3:1-6:7).

The irresistible force of the church will not be stopped as the church continues to multiplydisciples—

We read of the church expanding beyond the city of Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, just as the Lord Jesus had said in Acts 1:8.

The church at Jerusalem set the pattern how to deal with persecution. And the church atThessalonica followed their pattern. They were experiencing the same kind of sufferingfrom their own countrymen. Acts 17:4-9

SUFFERING IN CHRIST, FOR YOUR STAND FOR CHRIST IN RIGHTEOUSNESS ISTHE TRUE TEST OF DISCIPLESHIP.

Spirituality is an absoluteMaturity is a process.

Handling suffering. This book was written to suffering Christians.

The soul permeated with a devotion of truth will stand the fiery test of life.

Our love for the Gospel is tested by what we suffer for it.

You go along with the soft pace, along the stream of the world, do as others do…sit downand take your ease…you will not suffer. But you take up the cause of Christ, act for Christ, you will meet with spite as men andthe devil can possibly throw at you.

What kind of suffering in the United States, in Ohio, in Scioto County would you saywe would encounter in our righteousness for Jesus Christ?

I really do not believe in Scioto County, that any pain is inflicted upon those who livea righteous life. Physical or psychological pain or distress often occur in our lives.Yet there are all kinds of trials, difficulty that will occur in the life of everyone.

This church was the kind of people to be happy for:

1. They received the Word as God’s.2. They followed the pattern of the saints in Jerusalem.3. They stood firm in Christian fortitude in suffering.

Shall gain the whole world, and lose his ownsoul?Friday, June 26, 2009 I just posted yesterday the message I preached Sunday Evening from Philippians 1:21.To Die Is Gain, If I have Lived for Christ Today. These who have died with the worldmourning for their lost, died in vain most likely.Actress and model Farrah Fawcett lost her long battle with cancer today dying at the age 51

62, June 25, 2009.Her family, friends, and fanshoped and prayed that she would somehowrecover from her life threatening illness butunfortuately that was not the case. She willalways be remembered for her sexy role as"Jill Munroe" (pictured left) on the hit 70's TVshow "Charlie's Angels," as well as for themovies she starred in like "The Burning Bed"and "The Poor Little Rich Girl."'''==

What can I say, Farrah was born February1947, I will be 62 in October. I liked her hair, Iguess. Of course I liked Lee Major's whom shewas married to for several years.

But as to all of us, we have been given life on earth for a period of time, than we die. What we do with our life on earth will be to the glory of self, and those whom they want toplease. Sometimes there are those who get caught up in TV, etc. and are forced it seemsto do what is expected of them. There life is not there life but that of what they have madeit to become.

It seems most of the time, they are not really happy, but are forced it seems to do whatthey really would not do.

Often what we see on TV or the screen is not really what people really are. The mediawill try to kill about every one that is in public.

I really do not know a lot about Farrah. After Charlie Angels' I didn't follow her. Only in thelast year when she was sick and death was near did the attention get on Farrah. And thefact that she was dying and a Roman Catholic. Of course now, she will be said to havegone to Heaven...

Well, I am not the judge. Do I wish she she is? Yes? But.......

This pass week we know of three famous people who have died. They had the world attheir hands. They lost their soul in doing what they believed the world would like.

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?Orwhat shall a man give in exchange for his soul?Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed ofme and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son ofman be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." (Mark8:34-38) . While I hate to put these two people in the same post, I don't want to postabout MJ anyway. But I do believe some things need to be said anyway. . FOOTNOTEON THE OTHER PERSON WHO DIED JUST JUST HOURS AFTER Farrah, whom I hadno desire to know or listen to, but who had a soul and that is lost forever: He wrote. He isdead at the age of 50. He had everything the world offered--but no Jesus. . The linernotes from an album of his, and he quoted the final lines from William Ernest Henley'sfamous poem, Invictus:I am the master of my fate:I am the captain of my soul.. Your fame and wealth won't buy a place In God's eternal realm oflight. No, that's found only by his grace, And you chose self Worm, fire and night. by JimSwindle . ANOTHER COMMENT MADE IN THE DEATH OF mj

• From here we create our own standards of what we think a good person ought tobe, but even by our own standards we fail to measure up. Only by deceivingourselves are we able maintain any level of respectability and righteousness. Oftenduring these pursuits, we find ourselves engaging in all kinds of aberrant behaviorsimply trying to measure up to our own standards. In it, we are clinging to our ownrighteousness in order to appease the God we know is there. For many, even intheir suppression of the truth, will create a God to their liking and will try to appeasehim (Rom 1:23), but the God of scripture tells us that all our righteousness is likefilthy rags, and he wants nothing to do it them (Isa. 64:6). But, praise God, He thengoes on to tell us of the remedy that he has offered in Christ Jesus for all of us havesinned and fallen short of the Glory of God (Rom. 3:23) . You see, God the Fathersent his son to die upon the cross to bear the punishment for all who will believe inHim (John 3:16) in order to bring us into a right relationship with Him and give us thepeace we are seeking.

. To paraphrase John Donne, when we hear that someone has died and we wonder forwhom the bell tolls, there is a sense in which it will always be tolling for us. It is a constantreminder of our own frailty, telling us to be cognizant of our own end, and to ponder whatawaits us afterward, and whether or not we are living life the way it should be lived; to theglory of God (Psalm 39:4). THE REALITY OF PASTOR/TEACHER IS THISMonday, June 29, 2009

What a good day on Sunday. Mostpreachers it seems that I have known overthe years, and have worked with (and therehave been a few, believe me) don't seem tosee the reality of the church as it really is.

"Let's give the impression that the church isreally great, and there are no problems." Iwould hear a pastor say, "Let's put a spinon the problem and make it seem a bitbetter than what it really is."

Just before the pastor would leave the church, resign, go to another church, quit, forvarious other reasons, the church body would believe every thing was alright in thefather's house.

It's amazing how many pastors are out interviewing for another church, without theknowledge of anyone in the church. "Everything is just great, except I am leaving themoment I can get another church."

It's amazing how many church elders are looking for pastors of churches, while thepreacher is wishing to get another church to pastor. But if you ask the pastor, everything 53

Page 56: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

is okay in their present church.

How many churches have I attended, andwas available to pastor the church, but thechurch pastor search committee was notinterested. They were interested insomeone who was already pastoring achurch that they were not happy in. Onseveral occasions the preacher that cameto the church was not going to stay in thechurch for long. Think of that. A touch of

sarcasm there.

How many times have I heard from members in a church, "I wish the pastor would justleave." While at the same time, the pastor has no clue that is thought by any member. Why? Because those same members would deny that they said that at all.

Some pastors seem to be clueless to the situation in their church, and find themselves introuble because they are not in touch with their membership.

So how do you know if you should stay as pastor of the church you are in? Try to stayhonest in your mind as to the reality of what is going on in the church.

July 2008 I was asked by Bob Temple to come to speak with him at Rivers of Joy BaptistChurch. This was only to help the members out in their time of need. I went with fear andtrembling.

While I was so excited about preaching and teaching, and so overwhelmed, the realitywas, I believed there was no way this was going to work out. After all, I knew I was justabout the opposite in style from the former preachers. Well not really all that different, butI had come to approach ministry and preaching a little different. Our doctrine was aboutthe same, and our love for the Word was the same.

So Bob said I should preach in the morning and he would preach in the evening. So forthree weeks that is what we did. Then on the last Saturday of July the deacon called meto come to the church for a meeting with him. We had a good meeting and we expressedour concerns and beliefs and the situation at the church, (which was not good at all). Heasked and I agreed to become pastor of the church, if the members wanted me also.

So that Sunday evening, the church voted either to call a pastor or to shut the door, asthe deacon said. The membership said yes to me coming as pastor. The doors to thebuilding stayed open.

Now fast forward to July 2009 (almost) and I can say that I have really loved theexperience of the last year. The joy of preaching and teaching over the last year has filledmy soul and heart and mind so much that you can't imagine.

The experience that Charity and I have had has just overwhelmed us with great joy, andhumility. I am humbled at the love the folks have given us.

54

Page 57: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

I had just about given up on ever pastoring another church, I was sixty you know. But Iwas thinking I was a very young minded sixty. So I just settled in and was sad.

The church that I had attended for almost four years just didn't seem to find a place for usto really serve. And so we finally gave up and left, sadly I might say.

We started attending another church in town, and it was as if they didn't know we wereeven there either. I was getting this idea that we weren't really liked.

But God, in His time, must have felt sorry for us, kidding. When I believed the door wascompletely closed, He by His grace, opened up a place for us to love people, be loved bythe people, and have a chance to preach and teach and pastor again.

For the first time in our ministry, we have worked in a church from day one to now, andhave enjoyed every Sunday. It's a miracle. Maybe sixty is the age, I don't know, butCharity and I have loved this ministry so much.

I hope this is the real reality of what is really true. I hope the people at Rivers of Joy reallylove us as much as we really love the work and ministry and people at ROJBC.Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 07:03PM (-05:00)

TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD LOVE AND TO LOST YOUR OWN SOUL

My favorite after sermon comment is the young guy who came up to me three times andsaid 'That's the worst sermon I ever heard.' Eventually, one of the elders realized he wasbothering me but hadn't heard the young man; so the elder put his hand on my shoulder 55

Page 58: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

and said 'don't worry about him. He's a bit simple andhas a tendency to repeat what he hears otherssaying...'

Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let hercaptivate you with her eyes, for the prostitute reducesyou to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys uponyour very life. Can a man scoop fire into his lap withouthis clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hotcoals without his feet being scorched? So is he whosleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touchesher will go unpunished. (Proverbs 6:25-29) Or Provers8:1-6

1. We Christian men need to be diligent with guardingour hearts

2. Ladies, do not underestimate the power of sex in marriage and how important it is toyour husband.

3. Realize our sinful actions also impact others.

4. Marvel at how sin can make the most sober-minded, intelligent person to act stupidly.

It ought to serve as a sobering reminder of our own depravity.

Here are some lessons that I'm pondering today in the wake of this news:

1. We must acknowledge that our biggest problem is not "out there." It is "in here."

2. We must measure ourselves against the right standard.

3. We must guard ourselves in our friendships--and especially in our counselees.

4. We must seek accountability.

5. We must be sobered by how our sin affects others.

6. We must repent of putting our hope in people.

7. We must look away to Christ.

Reflection Over the Last Year at ROJBCSunday, July 05, 2009Charity and Charles E. Whisnant today July 05 2009, one year later at Rivers of JoyBaptist Church, in Minford OhioI am sitting in my library today Charity gets this photo of me teaching in the Bible Study today Okay who are these men? Bob Temple, Jimmy Grant and Bill Aldridge today. Today westarted our second year at Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, Minford Ohio. The last year, what a great time. Simply "Wild." And ithas been for a year. How do you measure the lastyear in terms of "wild?" By amazement.

57

Page 60: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

• The Lord has allowed us to be in this church for a year. The Lord has allowed us topreach and teach, sometimes four times a week. The Lord has brought to ourchurch some great people. Bill and Mary Bower, who now is our asso. pastor andthey are just a blessing. Pauline Lesmaster and her son Richard, Pauline teachingwith Frankie the teens, and sings special and is in the choir. Richard takes up theoffering and sings in the choir. John and Peggy Hall, Peggy is now my "pastor'ssecretary." Then Kindra Tumbleson joins us with her daugher Amber and Gavin. And Bob Temple has joined us, he now is our asso. pastor as well, and is ourworship leader.

• To have four preachers in your church is "wild" plus four.• To see the church support Charity and I for this whole year is "wild." I keep saying

that.• To lead the church into Eldership leadership is "wild."• To see a great choir, in which the numbers are bigger than those who sit in the

auditorium is really wild.• To see those who started out with us in July 2008, Bill & Linda Aldridge, Jimmy &

Lois Grant, Johnny & Phylis Edwards, Dorothy Fields, Bill & Janet Ramey, LeonaArthur, Danny & Frankie Dawkins, Stephanie Oppy, Mandy and Brandon havestayed with us.

• We have 99 percent of our folks listed above come in all four services during theweek. That is wild. We have some who come when they are able like Rosie, she isa special friend. Others come on special occassion, and we have a few childrenwho come.

• Of course we have had several families leave, that is always true in any change ofleadership. Some of the old members came back to see what we were about, andthey chose to leave.

• The transition of leaderhip was very smooth. We have thrown the bricks at the58

membership and they have responded with grace and patience. What can I say, other than, Praise to the Lord. I pray that the Lord will turn us around asa church body and He will give us the increase as He desires. I pray that we can becomea place where He is glorified and magnified and worshipped.

So I am standing in my library office. Our men are a little funny sometimes.

Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, might be theonly church in Ohio that has more people inthe choir than in the seats. But that is good,in a sense. They were practicing SundayEvening before the service. They do reallyhave a good time, and Bob Temple hasreally done great, and Johnny Edwardswho plays the piano really does well too.

The Milky Way Galaxy is the spiral galaxy we call home, and so do 100 billion other stars.

• There are 50 billion galaxies in the known universe.

• The end of the Andromeda galaxy which is approximately 2.5 million light-yearsaway, and . contains one trillion (1012) star and close enough to earth to be seenwith the naked eye.

• Most stars that you see are not actually stars, but are rather multiple star systemsrevolving around a center mass.

• The edge of the known universe is over 20 billion years of travel with about50galaxies behind it with about a hundred billion stars.

• Psalms 8:3 Job 26:14Genesis explains all this by saying this, ‘HE MADE THE STARS.”

The Drama Of Coming To MinfordSunday, July 12, 2009

The drama of coming to MinfordUpon arrival Alan and Angie to our house, they had come from a Weddingand a wanted a photo shot for the Sundaychurch bulletin.I of course turn this photo in a differentslant.Just before leaving to go back toConnersvi l le, Becky took this photoOf course we love the Harris's, for over 28years.Yesterday and today Charity and I visitedwith our 28 year friendship with Alan Harrisand 25 with Angie Harris. There is alwayssome drama when they come. Well, thisdate was no different. When we went overto set up for the Sunday Service, wediscovered there was a major storm andthe electric was out.

The show must go on, and they set up for62

their program on Sunday.

Today when I got to church, I discoveredthat the electric was still out and theprogram went on. With the door open, alittle light was able to get in and the 11 a.m.service was on.

Alan is a very good evangelist preacher. Hehas a heart for people. And today, again ashe has done for the last 25 years, gave agreat, biblical, and powerful, passioneddelivery of the sermon.

I tease him that it will take me a month toget our people back on track. Our peoplelove good evangelist preaching. That is whyI like Alan. I am a bible teacher by design. Iam not an evangelist. Alan is one of thebetter biblical ones.

While they had trouble with the musictoday, Anthony Harris was able to sing two songs. But come to thank about it, Alan didnot sing at all.

Our folks was blessed and so were we.

Charity as she does so well, had a great dinner at the house. She is one of the very bestpersons I know who does a great service in cooking and taking care of the needs our ourguest, friends and family.

Alan and Angie are perhaps one of the best teams in ministry today. They are honest, love the Lord, love their ministry, love their kids, love their friends, and love to reachpeople with the Word and music.Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 07:25PM (-05:00)

God's Amazing Diversity in Creation 2 of 3 from Charles E. Whisnant on Vimeo.

All living organisms characteristically have three properties.

1. They are self-sustaining, that is they have the capability to sustain their own life, like those little tiny, tiny wheels going around inside of you. They are self-sustaining.

2. Secondly, they are self-repairing. That is they fix themselves as they go.3. And most definitively, they are self-reproducing. A wheel of life machine is self-

sustaining or self-perpetuating, self-repairing and self-reproducing.So far we have never by all of our science been able to manufacture anything like that.We can't come up, for example, with a computer that sustains its own life and its ownenergy, repairs itself and has little computers. You don't have such a machine.

Adoniram Judson (1788-1850) was an American Baptist missionary, lexicographer, andBible translator to Burma. Is the subject of this lesson I gave at Rivers of Joy BaptistChurch July 19, 2009.

Ann Hasseltine Judson

• (1789-1826): Teacher, translator, author and first missionary wife of AdoniramJudson, she was the first American woman missionary to go overseas. Born inBradford, Massachusetts, Ann became a Christian at sixteen, studied at BradfordAcademy, and taught school for several years. Married Adoniram on February 5,1812, and within a few days they began a four month ocean journey with someother missionaries on the brig "Caravan" bound for Calcutta, India. Ordered to leaveIndia, the Judsons went to Rangoon, Burma, arriving on July 13,1813. Ann learnedthe Burmese and Siamese languages, did translation work, taught Burmese girls, and managed her household and cared for her husband during his 18 monthimprisonment in 1824-25. When home in the United States briefly in 1822 becauseof ill health, she wrote a history of the Burmese work titled American Baptist Missionto the Burman Empire, which was published in 1823. She died October 24, 1826, atthe age of thirty-seven. Both a son, Roger Williams (born 1815) and a daughter,Maria (born 1825) died in infancy (8 months and 27 months respectively).

Sarah Hall Boardman Judson.

• (1803-1845): Translator, author, hymnist and second missionary wife of AdoniramJudson. Born in Alstead, New Hampshire. Her family knew the Judsons well, andwhen she was thirteen she wrote a poem on the death of the first child of Ann andAdoniram. Sarah and George Dana Boardman were married in 1825, and went toBurma to work with the Judsons. Later they settled at Tavoy to work with amountain tribe (Karens), where she founded a school for girls. Her husband died in1831, and she continued the work with her small son, George. Sarah married

Adoniram in 1834, nearly eight years after the death of Ann Judson. During elevenyears of marriage, they had eight(?) children: Abby Ann (born 1835), AdoniramBrown (born 1837), Elnathan (born 1838), Henry (born 1838; died age 1 yr., 7months), Luther (stillborn, 1841?), Henry Hall (born 1842), Charles (born 1843),Edward (born 1844). She translated hymns and other materials into the Burmeselanguage. She died September 1, 1845, exhausted and ill, on a ship sailing back tothe United States.

Emily Chubbuck Judson (1817-1854):

• Author and third missionary wife of Adoniram Judson. Born in Eaton, New York. She was a professional writer under the pen name of Fanny Forester. Judson hadread some of her writings and contacted her to write the biography of his secondwife, Sarah. After working together on the biography, their acquaintance lead totheir being married in 1846, about a year after his return to the United Statesfollowing the death of Sarah. They returned to Burma, where Emily finished thebiography of Sarah, which was published in 1848. They had two children, adaughter Emily, born in 1847, and a son Charles, born (and died) the same day in1850, three weeks after the death of Judson. She returned to the United States in1851 and died of tuberculois in New York in 1854.

CAUTION: ALTAR CALLS ARE NOT IN THEBIBLE.Thursday, July 23, 2009 REASONS NOT TO GIVE AN ALTAR CALL

One might ask as I am often ask when I mention that I don't give an altar call. "But whatabout Romans 10:9, 10?" There we read, "…that if you confess with your month the LordJesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will besaved."

For some reason some believe if one is going to be saved, that person needs to goforward in a church service. And they use Romans 10 to address this issue.

So does God require a person to be saved in church, at an "altar call," in order to besaved?

Simple answer: NO.

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession ismade unto salvation."

The "saved" Paul speaks of here is not salvation from damnation, but salvation from thedamages of sin in present-day living. How does one escape these damagingconsequences? 69

Page 72: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

Paul's answer is, "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness." The words"believes unto righteousness" are a translation of the Greek word for "justified" – thesame word used in Romans 5:1. There we read, "Therefore having been justified by faith,we have peacewith God." Paul continues in Romans 9:10, "And with the mouthconfession is made unto salvation."

So what does "confession is made", that is the point here. Do we need to made aconfession in an altar call to be saved?

The point could be made.. One becomes a Christian by trusting Christ call in his heart. But to experience victory over sin, one must be willing to confess Him publicly. Whichdoesn't mean at an altar call, but to confess Christ before friends, and family.

Confession is important not for justification, because salvation is by Christ alone, butinstead for living the Christian life. Need help making such a confession? Paul exhortsthem to "Call upon the name of the Lord" (Romans 10:13), a phrase that has the idea ofworshipping God and invoking His assistance (cf. Acts 9:13-14, 1 Timothy 2:22). Thesestatement do not refer to getting saved. But calling upon the Lord after one has alreadyreceived the gift of salvation from our Lord.

It is therefore not surprising that Paul continues in Romans 10:14-15 by saying, "Howthen shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believein Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Andhow shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet ofthose who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!'" Note theclear distinction made between a public profession of Christ and believing in His name.

In Scripture, a public confession of Christ is never made a requirement of salvation.

To continue....

Four Options To The Creation of UniverseSaturday, July 25, 2009Only Four Options for the Origin of the Universe. from Charles E. Whisnant on Vimeo.

Now Sproul says there are only four options for the origin of the universe. You only havefour.

1. Option number one, the universe is an illusion, it doesn't exist. That's option numberone.2. Option number two, it is self-created.3. Option number three, it is self-existent and eternal.4. Option number four, it was created by someone who is self-existent.

Sproul says there aren't any other options.

1. Either it doesn't exist2. or it created itself,3. or it always existed,4. or somebody created it.

The Creation of Day Five ContinuesFriday, July 31, 2009Creation Day Five The Birds from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

July 29 2009, Charles E. Whisnant, continues the lesson on Creation from day five. Partone of the lesson.

1. When God created the fish and all those mammals and all those animals, whetheryou're talking about fish or whether you're talking about whales, or whether you'retalking about sea-going dinosaurs, or whether you're talking about eels, or whetheryou're talking about plankton or whatever anywhere in the food chain.

2. When God created all of that there was no evolutionary process,He literally in a moment spoke into existence all the creatures that swim...justinstantaneously at the same moment on the same day they call came intoexistence.

3. They were not somehow in a process of development as species evolved into otherspecies and mutated into other species.

4. They were all instantaneously created in massive abundances moving through theseas.

The Large Sea Monster continue from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

Part two from the lesson by Charles e. Whisnant July 29, 2009 at Rivers of Joy BaptistChurch. 2 of three.

• Isaiah 27:1 you have mentions of these sea gods who were so much a part ofCanaanitish culture, when the children of Israel went into the land of Canaan, theycame across this Canaanite poetry, Canaanite legends about the gods taking on the 73

Page 76: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

form of these great sea monsters.• So the sea monster then became a picture of the principle of evil, the anti-God evil

was sort of personified in the great sea monster, the great dragon of the sea, thegreat dinosaurs of the sea. A number of verses, as I said then, refer to leviathan, thegreat sea monster...always seemingly depicted as the great enemies of the trueGod, implying that they were somehow a super-natural deity or supernatural forcethat rose up against their creator. That was all in the ancient epics.

The Sea Monster and Reproduction of Life from charles e. whisnan t on Vimeo.

Part three of lesson from Genesis 1:24 Creation Day 5 Charles E. Whisnant, July 29,2009

If you study the Old Testament you find several Old Testament references to seacreatures. There's Leviathan, remember reading about Leviathan? Leviathan is thismassive, massive, powerful sea creature. Job 41:1 God, you know, says to Job, "Wherewere you?" you know, can you...He says, "Where were you when I created everything?"And then He comes to chapter 41 and He says, "Can you put your hooks in and controlleviathan?" And then he goes on to describe this massive beast, fierce...you can read Job41:1 yourself and read the characteristics of this beast. I wrote a little note on it. Somehave suggested it might be an alligator or a crocodile, but they're not in the sea as such. The best guess is that He's describing some kind of dinosaur, some kind of massive sea-going monster, leviathan.

IS 'DEPRESSION" A BIBLICAL RESPONSE?Friday, July 31, 2009

I must say, if you allow events in your lifeget to you, you could be in trouble with youremotions. You could get into the secularmode that is called depression. But since Idon't believe in depression for more thanten minutes as a biblical response to eventsin our lives, I try to respond in a mannerthat will allow me to react better than whatmy emotions are telling me.

MY PERSONAL TRAINING IN COUSELING:

Since I have my counseling training in several schools of thinking. One in the LiberityUniversity of Life Long where I worked on my master's in counseling. Second, InstituteFor Nouthetic Studies training for a number of years, while in Kansas as Pastor/Teacherfor 17 years. Thirdly, the Master's College where the training emphasizes the properinterpretation and specific application of Scripture in ministering to people. And, a numberof other, Charity loves Dr. Bill and Anabel Gillham counseling. And I have a number ofother resources on the subject of counseling both in the secular and in the Christiancommunity.74

Page 77: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

"It is true that NANC (which stands for the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors)once had their office at Faith Baptist Church, Ind, , it is also true that Bill Goode (formerSenior Pastor at Faith Baptist Church – now with the Lord) served as a president ofNANC. However, FBCM and NANC have always been separate organizations.Technically speaking, NANC is a certifying organization that does counseling trainingwhere FBCM is a counseling and counseling training center which is part of the overallministry of Faith Baptist Church. "I have taken these courses a number of years as wellwhile in Kansas.

MY TOPIC HERE IN THIS POST IS DEPRESSION:

• Depression is the buzzword for our time and culture. Every other commercial seemsto be an advertisement either from a mental health institution or a drug companyoffering a sure cure for people who find themselves depressed. If you have everbeen depressed, you know that it is a terrible state in which to exist. It is as if youare carrying around a 300-pound pack on your back, being forced to walk uphill, while having a terrible case of the flu. So those who are depressed will pursue anypossibility for a cure. But before a cure for depression can be found, we must besure we have a proper understanding of this terrible condition.

Depression is the name we have given to the spot where a person has had a “crashlanding” after reacting sinfully to one or more difficult or undesirable situations that Godhas brought into his life. Jay Adams explains depression this way:

• Almost anything can be at the root of the counselee’s depression: a recent illness inwhich he gets behind in his work, hormonal changes, a reversal of his fortunes, theconsequences of simple negligence, guilt over a particular sin, self-pity arising fromjealousy or a disadvantageous turn of events, bad feeling resulting from resentment, worry, etc. The important fact to remember is that depression does not resultdirectly from any one of these factors, but rather comes from a cyclical process inwhich the initial problem is mishandled in such a way that it is enlarged in downwardhelixical spirals that eventually plunge one into despair.

• The downward cycle of sin moves from a problem to a faulty, sinful response, thereby causing an additional complicating problem which is met by an additionalsinful response, etc.

What is depression?

According to the DSM-IV, a manual used to diagnose mental disorders, depressionoccurs when you have at least five of the following nine symptoms at the same time:

1. a depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning2. fatigue or loss of energy almost every day3. feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day4. impaired concentration, indecisiveness5. insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day6. markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day7. recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death)8. a sense of restlessness -- known as psychomotor agitation -- or being slowed down

-- retardation9. significant weight loss or gain (a change of more than 5% of body weight in a

month)Depression Types (for the secular point of view)

75

Page 78: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

• All depression types are not the same. Major depression, also known as clinicaldepression, and chronic depression, also known as dysthymia, are the mostcommon types. But there are also other types of depression with unique signs, symptoms, and treatment. What is major depressive disorder?

• According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depressive disorder ischaracterized by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a person's ability towork, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities.

• There are times you may feel sad, lonely, or hopeless for a few days. But majordepression -- clinical depression -- is disabling. It can prevent you from functioningnormally. An episode of clinical depression may occur only once in a person'slifetime. More often, though, it recurs throughout a person's life.

• In addition, with major depression, one of the symptoms must be either depressedmood or loss of interest. The symptoms should be present daily or for most of theday or nearly daily for at least two weeks. Also, the depressive symptoms mustcause clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. The symptomscannot be due to the direct effects of a substance -- drug abuse, medications -- or amedical condition, such as hypothyroidism, nor occur within two months of the lossof a loved one.

And what happens, how the culture and the medical field define depression, we asChristians pick up the same definitions, and symptoms. And as a Christian believer we allcould say we have some form of depressive symptoms daily.

Of course most people know the symptoms:

• Most of us know about the emotional symptoms of depression. But you may notknow that depression can cause physical symptoms, too.

• In fact, many people with depression feel pain or other physical symptoms. Theseinclude:

1. Headaches. These are fairly common in people with depression. If you already hadmigraine headaches, they may become worse if you're depressed.

2. Back pain. If you already suffer with back pain, it may get worse if you becomedepressed.

3. Muscle aches and joint pain. Depression can make any kind of chronic pain worse.4. Chest pain. Obviously, it's very important to get chest pain checked out by an

expert right away.5. It can be a sign of serious heart problems. But chest pain is also associated with

depression.6. Digestive problems. You might feel queasy or nauseous. You might have diarrhea

or become chronically constipated.7. Exhaustion and fatigue. No matter how much you sleep, you may still feel tired or

worn out.8. Getting out of the bed in the morning may seem very hard, even impossible.9. Sleeping problems. Many people with depression can't sleep well anymore. They

wake up too early or can't fall asleep when they go to bed. Others sleep much morethan normal.

10. Change in appetite or weight. Some people with depression lose their appetite andlose weight. Others find they crave certain foods -- like carbohydrates -- and weighmore.

11. Dizziness or lightheadedness.

I guess all of us have had some of these physical symptoms at one time or another.76

Page 79: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

So it seems we all at times want to get depressed when we have these physicalsymptoms. Well maybe we don't want to get depressed, but we do.

DEFINE DEPRESSION: Biblically. While I do not see the term depression in Scripture, there are other terms that might describe the word.

1. Overcome by fear2. Anxiety3. Worry

SO IT'S TRUE WE ALL AT TIMES STRUGGLE WITH THESE SYMPTOMS. And if I readthe scripture correctly, it is SIN to be overcome with fear, worry and anxiety.

So the issue is how do we control our emotions, our fears, our worry, or anxiety?

• Life is hard and full of drama and we respond in various and troubling ways. Peoplehave problems and tend to react problematically, struggling with big and smallissues alike: everything from annoying habits that are hard to kick to full blownaddictive behavior, from little conflicts in relationships to complete communicationbreak down, from anxious thoughts and mild anxiety to severe panic attacks and thedeepest, darkest depression. Human beings often live lives of quiet desperation, wearing masks, fearing what others think, feeling like hypocrites, longing to bedifferent, but having no real hope for authentic and lasting change.

• I will address in another post. Which will deal with:• Biblical counseling is built on the simple truth that God has spoken to us in his

Word, and revealed everything we need to know about him, ourselves, and how tolive in his world. The Lord, who made us, sees, evaluates and speaks to everyaspect of human life and understands the deepest complexities and struggles of thehuman heart. Scripture speaks to the heart, where we trust and love either the trueGod or some other God-replacement in our lives such as pleasure, control, peace orprosperity. The Bible is not an encyclopedia or a how-to book of techniques forchange, but rather a grand story of redemption that ultimately points to arelationship with the person of Jesus Christ. It is in relationship with this Jesus–through his life, death, resurrection and rule that people become different andexperience true and lasting change in the midst of their various human struggles.

We will review some Biblical ways of handling these emotions and struggles

It wasnecessary because of some deadlines and bad weather for them to work at night. While busy on the edge of the wall, he slipped, lost his balance, fell over the edge, grabbed the edge of the wall with both hands and hung on desperately. He began toscream and cry and call for someone to rescue him. It was pitch black, rivetingmachines were going, metal hammers were beating and pounding, mechanicalmotors were running and nobody could hear a word. Gradually his arms grew numbas he hung suspended over the street below and his fingers began to slip andagainst every effort of his own will to hold on, at last he lost his hold and hefell...about three inches to a scaffold that had been there all the time. SATAN IS OUT TO SHAKE YOU UPTuesday, August 04, 2009

Christians who are Holy Spirit-filled will be able to work through times of emotional dramain their lives.(Notes from August 2 2009 message)Paul's Cure for a Dysfunctional ChurchVs. 18 “We want to come to you.” 18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even IPaul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. 1 Thess 2:18)

It’s the Elders’ desire to bring people in the church to a fuller spiritual life. We desire tosee our people grow in their spiritual life. Paul wanted to evaluate spiritual needs. If theywere growing, teach them more. Lead them, mother them, father them.

I believe there is in these passages in I Thessalonians, Paul’s cure for a dysfunctionalchurch. And why there are so many

Dysfunctional - Definition: (A cultural term, not a biblical term)1. relating badly: characterized by an inability to function emotionally or as a social

bureaucracy

Satan hindered us -- On a different occasion "the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Jesus"78

(so the oldest manuscripts read), Ac 16:6, 7 forbad or hindered them in a missionarydesign; here it is Satan, acting perhaps by wicked men, some of whom had alreadydriven him out of Thessalonica (Acts 17:13-14) compare John 13:27, or else bysome more direct "messenger of Satan -- a thorn in the flesh" (2 Corin 12:7, 2 Corin11:14). In any event, the Holy Ghost and the providence of God overruled Satan'sopposition to further His own purpose. We cannot, in each case, define whencehindrances in good undertakings arise; Paul in this case, by inspiration, wasenabled to say; the hindrance was from Satan. GROTIUS thinks Satan's mode ofhindering Paul's journey to Thessalonica was by instigating the Stoic and Epicureanphilosophers to cavil, which entailed on Paul the necessity of replying, and sodetained him; but he seems to have left Athens leisurely (Ac 17:33, 34, Acts 18:1).The Greek for "hindered" is literally, "to cut a trench between one's self and anadvancing foe, to prevent his progress"; so Satan opposing the progress of themissionaries.—Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

Satan will try just about anything to hinder the church family from accomplishing itsbiblical purpose.

Footnote:

• I have a new Kodek and the video recording for Sunday's Message was only for 30minutes which was about 10 minutes less than my message. And the GB washigher than the old Kodek. I can only upload 1GB at a time. The old Kodek wouldgive me 22 minutes per 1 GB the new one would give 1GM for about 11 minutes.

• I will post Sundays video message later today. The message is in three parts dueto the explaination above.

HAPPINESS IN THE SECULAR SENSE IS NOTVERY LONGTuesday, August 04, 2009In reading the book "Happiness Is A Choice" Barry Kaufman 7 steps to overcomedepression.(Its a start)(I received this from a friend earlier today)

1. Commit your life daily to the purpose of glorifying Jesus Christ.2. Spend some time each day meditating on God's Word and applying it to your life.3. Get rid of grudges daily.4. Spend a little time nearly every day getting more intimate with your mate and

children. Parents, brothers, sisters, and other close relatives should also have ahigh priority. Do all you can to resolve family conflicts.

5. Spend some time each week having fellowship and fun with at least one or twocommitted Christian friends of the same sex. If you are married, have fun with othermarried couples. In this way husband and wife can together benefit from intimacywith others.

6. Be involved in a daily routine (including work, play, housework, projects) that bringspersonal satisfaction to you. Be convinced that this routine is God's will and purposefor your life-your way of glorifying Him.

7. Do something nice for on special person each week. This kind deed can bephysical(helping with a chore, for example), emotional (buying a book or givingcounsel) or spiritual( having devotions together.

79

Page 82: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

For anyone who personally knows Jesus Christ as his Savior, and lives by these biblicalprinciples happiness is a choice. Then I read on a blogger this from a mom.

1. I don’t like the intimations of happiness being a choice. Call me jaded if you wantbut I just don’t like the idea of someone telling a depressed mom that she made the“choice” to be depressed. Yeah, right. I CHOSE to have horrific thoughts aboutharming my children. I CHOSE to slide so far down my pole that I landed in a psychward. Yeap, that’s me. Choosing to be horrifically clinically depressed with OCDthrown in just for kicks. Why? Cuz I like it there. I like it in the dark, all alone, millingover thoughts of how to hurt my kids, thinking that everyone is out to get me.C’MON.

And that does make sense doesn't it. Many do find themselves in a state of unhappiness, and before they know it, they have many of the symptoms of "DEPPRESSION." I fullyundertstand that, don't you.

There are few who want to get into a state where they are "crushed under the load thatsometimes life in general throws at them.

I don't know anyone who doesn't have situtations in their lives that if allowed would totallycrush them into a state of worry, fear, and anxiety. While it is true we do personally getour selves in to situtations that will result in a lot of unhappen results. But most of the stuffin our lives come via someone other means.

While we create a lot of things in our lives that will cause of grief, worry, anxiety, there area lot of events in our lives that are not of our causing and will result in the same problems.

Life isn’t about what it hands you. It’s about how you handle life. Looking at life throughthat lens would make it seem that happiness is a choice and to a certain extent it is achoice.

But sometimes life throws a curveball you just can’t avoid. So what are you to do? Youhave two choices. You can either let it knock you flat on your butt and stay there forawhile…..Or you can pick yourself up, dust off the dirt and mend the wounds, and go onyour way.

But the longer you stay on your butt, the harder you are going to find the strength to getup.

So the scripture tells us to "examine ourselves daily to see where we are in living life." (2Cor 7:1) We are to be like David in Psa. 51 we are to ask the Lord to "cleanse our heartdaily." Psa 51:10. Psa 51:12 "Restore to me the joy of your salvation.""And sustain mewith a willing spirit."

I am happy once are twice a day. If Tiger Woods win I am happy. I am happy if I get totalk to my children. I am unhappy if I hear what my children are telling me about there life.I am happy if Charity is happy. If I have $100 in the checking account I am happy.

I really don't focus so much on happiness. But there are ways to stay happy longer.

I read this earlier today:

• Every day, it seems, we're flooded with pop-psych advice about happiness. Therelentless message is that there's something we're supposed to do to be happy --80

Page 83: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

make the right choices, or have the right set of beliefs about ourselves. OurFounding Fathers even wrote the pursuit of happiness into the Declaration ofIndependence.

• Coupled with this is the notion that happiness is a permanent condition. If we're notjoyful all the time, we conclude there's a problem.Yet what most people experienceis not a permanent state of happiness. It is something more ordinary, a mixture ofwhat essayist Hugh Prather once called "unsolved problems, ambiguous victoriesand vague defeats -- with few moments of clear peace." J. Scott McKay

So I have learned happeness is a state of mind, and I am going to be happen sometimes,I am not going to to happen very long at a time. Happy could be described as thefollowing ways

1. feeling or showing pleasure, contentment, or joy2. causing or characterized by pleasure, contentment, or joy3. feeling satisfied that something is right or has been done right4. resulting unexpectedly in something pleasant or welcome5. slightly drunk6. used in formulae to express a hope that somebody will enjoy a special day or

holiday7. inclined to use a particular thing too readily or be too enthusiastic about a particular

thingSome one will say, "How are you doing?" I will say, "good." They might say, "Just good, not great." What do they mean by that? You can't force a person to be good, or great, orto be in high spirits.

If I am drunk, I could be really great in my mind, high in spirit. But it doesn't mean I amhappy. (Of course I have never had a drink of Cool Light either.) No wonder I am neververy happy.

So where we are, not happy about this post. Or can we be pleased with what we havesaid, because someone might be happy to read it?

SHOULD CHRISTIAS BELIEVERS GETCLINICAL DEPRESSIONWednesday, August 05, 2009SHOULD CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS GET CLINICAL DEPRESSIONChristians Struggle With Life. How Should Christians Deal with Life’s Events? How to respond to emotions of Fear, Worry and AnxietySunday Evening I spoke from Philippians 1 again (as a matter of fact I have taught in thisbook now since I have pastored Rivers of Joy Baptist Church.) THE INTEGRITY OFWEARING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST PERSONALLY An exhortation tosteadfastness, unity, fearlessness.

81

Page 84: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

• 27 Only let your conversation be as it becomes the gospel of Christ: that whether Icome and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast inone spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; 28 And innothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. 29 For unto you it is given in the behalf ofChrist, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; 30 Having thesame conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me. Phil 1:27-30.

Now that does not sound like we as Christians should get into the condition that is calledclinical depression. IF YOU GO TWO WEEKS WITHOUT PRAYER, BIBLE STUDY, ANDBIBLICAL TEACHING, WISDOM, AND WORSHIP, AND YOU ARE HIT BY DAILYEVENTS IN OUR LIVES, YOU COULD GET YOURSELVE TO THE POINT OF BEINGOVER COME WITH FEAR, WORRY AND ANXIETY.

We hear the term so much "depression" most of us will use the term to describe us whenwe have the “symptoms” quote of depression. According to the DSM-IV, majordepressive disorder (or "depression") is diagnosed when five or more of the followingsymptoms of depression are present for most of the day, nearly every day for at least 2weeks. At least one of the symptoms must be either persistent sad or "empty" feelings orloss of interest in activities.

• Constant sadness• Irritability• Hopelessness• Trouble sleeping• Low energy or fatigue• Feeling worthless or guilty for no reason• Significant weight change• Difficulty concentrating• Loss of interest in favorite activities

As I am doing research on this subject, I note there are a number of definitions of termswe use to describe ourselves.

Sadness, empty feelings, loss of interest, feelings of lack of fulfillment, downturn in moodor frame of mind, a feeling or display of gloom or anger or irritability over somethingperhaps trivial.

82

Page 85: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

So would you say any of the above or below symptoms are to characterize a Christian?

And I WOULD say all people could describe themselves in these terms at times

Our “emotional state of mind,” our “mood today is”, our “feeling today could be describedas”,So I am taking a look at terms that are used in our description of ourselves. The processof giving an account or explanation of events in our lives.

Depression (mood), a common term for a sad or low mood or emotional state, or the lossof pleasure.

An emotion is a "complex reaction pattern, involving experiential, behavioral, andphysiological elements, by which the individual attempts to deal with a personallysignificant matter or event." It arises without conscious effort and is either positive ornegative in its valence.

Other closely related terms are:

• affect, a synonym for emotion• affect display, external display of emotion• disposition, referring to a durable differentiating characteristic of a person, a

tendency to react to situations with a certain emotion• feeling, which usually refers to the subjective, phenomenological aspect of emotion• mood, which refers to an emotional state of duration intermediate between an

emotion and a disposition• http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/emotional+state

Of course we all know people who have such emotions, moods, sorrow, fear, worry andanxiety.

I OFTEN GIVE AN ACCOUNT OF MY PAST EXPERIENCES. Charity and I often hearaccounts of people’s experiences in life. This process of giving an account of ourexperiences sometimes are pleasant, sometimes they are heart wrenching, youremotions are forcibly moved to one level to another level of feelings, some good andsome bad.

So to get an idea of what we are dealing in terms we use, I am trying to understand whatis meant by the terms we use.

“Emotion is generally regarded by Western civilization as the antithesis of reason. Thisdistinction stems from Western philosophy specifically Cartesian dualism and moderninterpretations of Stoicism, and is reflected in common phrases like appeal to emotion oryour emotions have taken over.”

“Depression is a serious biologic disease that affects millions of people each year. Theencouraging news is that it may be successfully treated. Learn how you can manage yourdepression by reaching out to others such as a health care professional or family and 83

Page 86: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

friends.”

Psychology and mood:

• Depression (mood), a common term for a sad or low mood or emotional state, orthe loss of pleasure.

• Clinical depression, or major depressive disorder, a clinical term for a state ofintense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of beingdisruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living.Subtypes of clinical depression:

• Melancholic depression, characterized by the inability to find pleasure in positivethings combined with physical agitation, insomnia, or decreased appetite.

• Atypical depression, a common long term cyclical form of depression in which theindividual can feel enjoyment, eat, and sleep, but there is significant lethargy, a'leaden' feeling, and a strong response to rejection-related issues.

• Psychotic depression, in which clinical depression co-exists with psychotic ordelusional perceptions.

• Postpartum depression, depression following childbirth, sometimes known as'postpartum blues'.

Now do Christians get into these kinds of “depressions”? And if so how do they deal withthem.

I often hear that Charles Spurgeon had “depression”? And I ask myself how is thatpossible? So I found this article about Charles Spurgeon:

• “Few men in God’s army have been as faithful and productive as CharlesSpurgeon. His work output, as it is recounted, seems almost superhuman: Thechurch had many institutions which needed constant input from Spurgeon, such asthe Pastor’s College, the Almshouses, the Orphanage, the Colportage Associationand many evangelistic and compassionate societies, the latter usually being chairedby the elders. There were 66 of these by the time Spurgeon had been pastor for 25years. The Pastor’s College generated a great deal of work, not only in the regularinterviewing, lecturing and oversight, but also in the endeavors and cares of thechurches founded by former students . . . Spurgeon’s literary work was immense. He compiled more than 140 books, maintained the monthly The Sword and theTrowel magazine (from 1865), and edited the weekly sermon (The MetropolitanTabernacle Pulpit) . . . [and] he responded to an average of 500 letters each week(p. 11). What is even more amazing is that he accomplished all this while havingregular bouts with serious illness throughout the last 24 years of his life. Theseletters, many of which were written from France while on leaves of absence due toillness, are addressed to his congregation. Many of them speak of his pain and histrials, many of them speak of his great passion for the salvation of the lost, but all ofthem reflect the love and concern of a true pastor. The letters are divided into threetime periods, Part 1: 1876-83; Part 2: 1884-90; Part 3: 1891-92. At the end of thebook appear several short articles and sermons written by Spurgeon. This attractivevolume includes pictures, illustrations, annotations regarding the circumstancesreferred to in the letters, and pictures of some of the original letters.”

84

Page 87: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

Then I have read D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Spiritual Depression (the book is not aboutdepression) which is used to say that Christians can have depression.

• “Very well, that is what I regard as perhaps the most important rule of all, that wemust not concentrate overmuch upon our feelings. Do not spend too much timefeeling your own pulse taking your own spiritual temperature, do not spend toomuch time analyzing your feelings. That is the high road to morbidity (p. 115);”

• “If you want to be truly happy and blessed, if you would like to know true joy as aChristian, here is the prescription: ‘Blessed (truly happy) are they who do hungerand thirst after righteousness’ not after happiness.”This book is not so much about depression (a word that has taken on official, clinicalconnotations), as it is about a lack of joy in the Christian life.

•End of this post, maybe. Thanks dear, deer, doe, Charity. Your buck Charles.

Should Christians Stay In A State of DepressionFriday, August 07, 2009

WHAT IS DEPRESSION

Feeling down from time to time is a normal part of life. But when emptiness and despairtake hold and won't go away, it may be depression. More than just the temporary "blues,"the lows of depression make it tough to function and enjoy life like you once did. Hobbiesand friends don’t interest you like they used to; you’re exhausted all the time; and justgetting through the day can be overwhelming. When you’re depressed, things may feelhopeless, but with help and support you can get better. But first, you need to understanddepression. Learning about depression — including its signs, symptoms, causes, andtreatment — is the first step to overcoming the problem.

So tell me, who does not have these symptoms at times. Are we already into"depression" or are we going into depression? I can say, "I Am Depressed." So does thatmakes it okay to accept it?

Common signs and symptoms of depression

* Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever getbetter and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.* Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in or ability to enjoy former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex.* Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of morethan 5% of body weight in a month.* Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, oroversleeping (also known as hypersomnia).* Psychomotor agitation or retardation. Either feeling “keyed up” and restless or sluggishand physically slowed down.* Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued and physically drained. Even small tasks areexhausting or take longer.* Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticism of perceivedfaults and mistakes.* Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.

So look that this list..... To have the attitudes of some of these is sinful, wrongful thinking. And you are saying, "I can't help it?" I might feel restless or sluggish or feel fatigue andphysically drained or not able to focus or not feeling strong and this attitude might get meto feel hopeless.

I don't say, "I am depressed!" I don't say I am worthless. Well I might. But I don't believeit. I don't take my thoughts and make them law of my life. Am I as a Christian believerworthless? No. Might I feel worthless in the sight of God? Yes. AM I? No.

I am not going to act upon feelings to the point of believing I am worthless. Which if I do,86

Page 89: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

can lead me to false reading of my self.

Had I read into some of the events that have taken place in my ministry and life, I wouldbe really depressed, heart broken, sad, sluggish, and worthless. And I would have justquit and got into the term used by the medical field, as manic depressive. What is thatanyway? If that had happen I would not be the Pastor/Teacher of Rivers of Joy BaptistChurch.

Well, you say, I don't know how all this has happen? I now find myself with all thesesymptoms. This could be true I am sure. So that is why it is important to keep a daily tapon your life.

Remember you are more than the sum total of all your negative experiences.Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 06:36AM (-05:00)

CAN CHRISTIANS BE BIPOLAR?Friday, August 07, 2009

FOOTNOTE:

First I am not a writer, as you can tell, and I just putdown thoughts that most of the time seem ramdomin nature. Sorry about that.

• It seems believers are being identified more by psychiatric labels than by their fruit.Labels like ADHD, bipolar, panic attacks, OCD and integration sensory disorder arebecoming more normal than the list from Galatians 5:22-23 to describe the Church.

• Since more believers are being diagnosed with these and other kinds of psychiatriclabels pastors, elders and lay counselors are finding it difficult to offer counsel thatseems relevant. Sufferers bear the emotional, physical, mental, and relationalburden of the diagnosis, while pastors are hard pressed to understand and acceptthe premise of the diagnosis. The believer who is looking for comfort and guidancefrom their leaders typically struggle with the counsel they receive because a gap ofmisunderstanding separates them.

BIPOLOAR DISORDER OR MANIC DEPRESSION

• Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, manic depressive disorder orbipolar affective disorder, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category ofmood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally

87

Page 90: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

elevated mood clinically referred to as mania or, if milder, hypomania. Individualswho experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes orsymptoms, or mixed episodes in which features of both mania and depression arepresent at the same time. These episodes are usually separated by periods of"normal" mood, but in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidlyalternate, known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead topsychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. The disorder has beensubdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types, based on thenature and severity of mood episodes experienced; the range is often described asthe bipolar spectrum.

You click on the blue for the definitions of these terms.

Here is my point, it is not that Christians don't get themselves in these conditions. They do. But should they have gotten themselves in theses conditions?

DIAGNOSIS

• Diagnosis is based on the self-reported experiences of an individual as well asabnormalities in behavior reported by family members, friends or co-workers,followed by secondary signs observed by a psychiatrist, nurse, social worker, clinical psychologist or other clinician in a clinical assessment. There are lists ofcriteria for someone to be so diagnosed. These depend on both the presence andduration of certain signs and symptoms. Assessment is usually done on anoutpatient basis; admission to an inpatient facility is considered if there is a risk tooneself or others. The most widely used criteria for diagnosing bipolar disorder arefrom the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ofMental Disorders, the current version being DSM-IV-TR, and the World HealthOrganization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related HealthProblems, currently the ICD-10. The latter criteria are typically used in Europe andother regions while the DSM criteria are used in the USA and other regions, as wellas prevailing in research studies.

So there you have it. Can we say that those who have bioplar disorder have a form ofmental illness? What is mental illness? Good question.

What percentage of Christian pastors suffer from some type of mental illness?• I am sure many pastors of all churches suffer from some kind of mental illness? I

have worked I am sure with a few of them.So who makes the disagnoses of our conditions?

• We go to the doctor, what kind of disagnoses is he going to give us? We go to afriend what kind of dosagnoes will they give? We go to a professional counselerwhat is their disagnoses? What if we were to go to a pastor/teacher, what would bethe disagoses? What if we went to all these people? How many different disagnoseswould we have and how to solve them?

How would a medical doctor view a conditon verses a pastor/teacher?

This is going to be a renewing of your mind. This could be a life changing adventure!

• John Calvin: “If a man understands this book, he has a sure road of understandingof the whole of Scripture.” William Tyndale: “Romans is deep, profound, divine, yet itis in the grasp of all of us.

• In this book you have Paul giving the essences of the last word of the Christianfaith. It says all Paul intends to sum up and say about the gospel of Jesus Christ. This book will guard you against, guard you from heresy

IMPORTANT WORDS IN THE BOOK OF ROMANS:God (153), Law (72), Christ 65 Sin 48 Lord 43 Faith 40. Romans is about those terms.

So the book of Romans is about God, Law, Christ, Sin, The Lord, Faith.

God is putting together a group of people who are going to give glory to His Son, JesusChrist, for ever. Heaven is a place where the Trinity dwells, and a place that we who byGod's grace alone have been saved by His grace will dwell with the Trinity. This plan wassettled before the foundation of the world, set in motion early in the process of Creation. And history is a story of God saving sinners and giving them to His Son Jesus Christ as aBride who will adore Him forever.

To walk with Christ has His Bride is a joy unspeakable and full of glory. Its not only inwords but in our hearts, mind and body. We rejoice in Christ.Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 05:27AM (-05:00)

Ellen and StephenSaturday, August 22, 2009

I can't believe Stephen is now 20 yearsold. My sister took her son back toLynchburg, Va. to college this week. She ishaving way too much fun, I think, accordingto Facebook.

She stopped over in Danville, VA.

I could say a lot about Danville, Va. OurDad had died in February 1966, and Mom and the familywere asked to move to Danville, by Bob Barber, Jr. Momwas worked for Bob at the Baptist Tabernacle. I was goingto Seminary in Arlington, Tx. And Ellen was a kid, let mesee, 1958 to 1966 would be about 7 or 8 years old. Donwas a Senior in High School. I believe we were all a littleupset to be without our Dad. I finished my first year atBBS and came back for the summer, and worked forSouthhall Baptist Church. That was a real experience. While I loved working with the teens, and very successfulfor sure, so successful that the preacher didn't like it. Ohwell, my life story for the next 20 years. Don and I wentback to Seminary in 1967 and had a good year. I reallycan't remember what happen next. I know I stayed in Fort

Worth, Tx in a hotel in downtown, and worked for Mrs Baird Bread Bakery. And I visited 95

the First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, that was a good expereince. Those were years oflearning and growing. Let us skip over those years, and now we are in 2009. And life forus is so good. Charity and I are doing the best we have ever had it.Posted by Charles E. Whisnant at 08:53PM (-05:00)

SO AM I TEACHING OR PREACHING ORBOTH?Wednesday Night Bible Study Augut 19,2009

Peop le somet imes charac te r i ze ameticulous preacher as a better teacherthan a preacher. While different people willmean di f ferent things in describingsomeone as a preacher or teacher, manypeople today in general think of preachingas speaking forcefully, pounding on thepulpit, speaking loudly, demanding a"amen", having a prepared command ofscripture, making application and usingillustrations, and then exhorting people tofollow biblical concepts.By teaching, many people think teaching ispresent ing a passage of scr ipture, comment ing upon i t , and mak ingexplanations to make the meaning of thebiblical passage clear. And of course, someoverlapping of preaching and teaching isnormally accredited.

So Really What Is Preaching?Thursday, August 27, 2009NOW WHAT IS PREACHING?OR WHAT I LIKE TO CALL TEACHING.

I looked up the term "preaching" from Microsoft Word dictionary.

96

Page 99: Grow By Learning[4] 2009 May Aug

1. To give a talk on a religious or moral subject.2. To give advice on morality or behavior in an frustratingly, or infuriatingly, irritatingly

tedious or overbearing way.3. To make an opinion or attitude known to others and urge others to share it.

I realize that there are so many brands of preachers and preaching. But I am talking toBaptist. I am a Baptist, and will always be a Baptist. Now that also has many differentdefinitions. Here is my definition of a Baptist.

1. The Word of God is blueprint of doing the Lord's Work in the Lord's Way.2. I define a Baptist as one who looks to the Word as the guide for policy and conduct

and preachingh

Style of preaching is not found in the Bible. Well, I don't believe anyone preaching today, would have the style of Jesus, or Peter, or even Paul. They style should not be the point.I don't believe Jesus ever stood behind a pulpit. But that doesn't make it wrong either.

The style is not so important. Style without content is not good either. Preaching hasbeen defined in a number of ways.

Biblical preaching will teach the Word of God. Preaching is giving forth the Word of God.
