Legislative Changes 2017/18
NIC & PAYE
• NIC – Lower Earnings Limit increased to £113.00 (per week)
• NIC – Primary & Secondary Thresholds increased to £157 (per week)
• Default tax code when setting up a new employee is 1150L
• If importing from BrightPay 16/17, the following codes will be uplifted automatically:
L codes by 50
M codes by 55
N codes by 45
Scottish Rate of Income Tax (SRIT)
• Simply enter the applicable Scottish
tax code within the Employee’s
record:
Statutory Payments & Student Loans
• Statutory Sick Pay – new rate of £89.35 (previously £88.45)
• SMP/ SPP/ SAP/ ShPP – new rate of £140.98 (previously £139.58)
• Student Loan Deductions:
– Plan 1 threshold increased to £17,775 per annum (£17,495 in 16/17)
– Plan 2 threshold remains at £21,000
– Percentage deduction remains at 9%

• Ability to process 2017-18 Coding Notices
• This function has now been moved to the ‘Payroll’ utility:

• Payable by employers with an annual pay bill in excess of £3,000,000.
• Payable from 6th April 2017
• 0.5% of annual pay bill
• Apprenticeship levy allowance - £15,000 per annum
• Paid in the same manner as PAYE & NICs
• Reported via the Employer Payment Summary

• New rates effective from 1st April 2017 are:

• National Minimum/Living Wage (including apprentices), UK Living Wage &
London Living Wage catered for in BrightPay
• Using the employee's age (on pay date), number of hours worked in period,
and minimum wage profile, BrightPay will determine the effective hourly rate
used and compare it against the required minimum hourly rate
• The user will be notified if an employee's wage appears to be below the
minimum

• Improvements have been made to how pay dates are entered when finalising payslips
• When re-opening and re-finalising payslips, the previously used pay date is
remembered

• BrightPay 2017/18 now allows you to adjust the 5.6 weeks statutory holiday
week’s entitlement figure for the annual leave calculation types

• Company car information can now be reported on the Full
Payment Submission, if the car is being payrolled
• Remember to register with HMRC before 6th April in order to
payroll benefits:
