The unit boasts modern and stylish features and is high-tech ready for both patients and staff alike. The unit’s beauty is more than just skin deep. Functionality and efficiency are behind every design element and each amenity — from full-sized, convertible sofa sleepers for patient family members, combination safes to secure personal belongings, and charging stations for mobile devices — to a spacious restroom layout with open shower stalls for safe and ease of access, and flat screen televisions, and computer monitors at each bed-side.

“Thanks to the feedback obtained from staff, physicians, and patients through design sessions, mock-up room tours, and surveys, we were able to create a patient room that provides the best experience for all from a safety, ergonomic, and

aesthetic perspective,” said Karla McCaney, vice President of Facilities Management.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 3, which marked the official opening of the unit, PAH Executive Director, R. Michael Buckley, Md, summed up the primary reason for the move toward a private room facility: “It is clear that this simply is the right thing to do for our patients.”

The next unit of an additional 18 private rooms on 6 Preston will be dedicated to mothers and babies post-partum, and will open in February of 2014. Over the next several years, the goal is to continue renovations and construction for additional private rooms throughout the main Hospital and Spruce Buildings with the ultimate goal of 100 percent private Medical/Surgical and Post-Partum rooms.

First Private Patient Room U n I T O p e n S AT pA HPrivate room initiative

& ConstruCtion UpdateAfter a year of major hospital renovations, departmental relocations, and new construction, the first unit of all private patient rooms officially opened December 9. The unit, located on 7 Preston, consists of 18 new rooms for orthopaedic and neurosurgery patients and is a major milestone in the execution of the Hospital’s $61 million long-range facility master plan.

COngrATulATIOnS to Team uPHS/PEnn MS Society

City to Shore Bike ride participants and their supporters! Team uPHS/PEnn set a new single year fundraising record of $174,170 in 2013, squeezing past the $171,887 record set in 2007. “We again had the largest team with

289 riders participating, an amazing day, great weather, lots of fun and memories

to last a lifetime,” said daniel Wilson, MBA, BSn, Rn, FABC, vice president, Allied Health and Ambulatory Services. Team uPHS/PEnn continues to receive regional accolades from the MS Society by again winning: [1] The largest team Award, [2] Top Fundraising Team Award, [3] The Millennium Award (for teams surpassing $100,000), and [4] for the first time, national recognition at the MS Society

leadership Conference in Denver winning the coveted Circle of Distinction Award. This prestigious award, which recognizes teams who have raised more than $1 million since their inception, has only been given to 94 out of a total of 2,740 teams nationally since 2002. This was Team uPHS/PEnn’s 17th year, having raised an amazing $1,582,549.

The McClellan Conference Center was packed to the gills this past November 6, as staff, family and friends came to honor colleagues and loved ones being recognized at the 5th Annual PAH Patient Advocacy Recognition Program and Reception. As in past years, the UPHS Office of Patient Affairs and PAH Patient & Guest Relations selected outstanding staff who are PAH partners in patient advocacy. Thirteen honorees, representing ten Hospital departments, were individually spotlighted for consistently elevating the Penn patient experience and helping to make PAH, “The best place for a patient to be a patient.”

Daisy and Brownie Troop Leaders Wendy Nowell and Lydia Matthews from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, along with Teyonna Powell, Zamiia Pettit and Laila Hammie, made a special visit to PAH’s Mother & Baby (Post-Partum) unit this fall. The group came to present a gift basket to the first baby girl born at PAH on October 31 — which is the birthday of Girl Scout’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low. The amazing “gift basket” was actually crafted like a pink and white, multi-tiered cake constructed of disposable diapers and trimmed with other baby-friendly gifts. It was presented to Krystal and John Ham of Queen Village, Philadelphia. The Girl Scouts chose to honor their founder’s birthday at PAH because of the Hospital’s long-standing reputation of excellence in obstetrical and neonatal care and because the most babies in the City of Philadelphia are delivered annually at PAH.

PENN’S WAY THANk YoUpAH exceeded its participation goal for the 2014 penn’s Way campaign with 92 percent participation and by raising more than $102,000, helping Penn Medicine far exceed its goal of $725,000.

This year, $20,000 of these gifts was designated to Pennsylvania Hospital, which will be allocated to support the following three vital areas: strengthening our community outreach programs;

improving the health literacy of our patients and their families; and helping ease patients’ transition from hospital to home.

“Times are tough — especially during the holiday season. I’m grateful for — and proud of — the selflessness and immense generosity our employees have demonstrated through their charitable donations during this challenging time of year,” said R. Michael Buckley, Md, executive director, PAH.

Health care providers share a special commitment to helping others. Through Penn’s Way, our combined financial support improves the health of our community, strengthens neighborhoods and creates resources to prepare children for the future and increase adult independence. All contributions, both big and small, will literally help thousands of organizations and people in our community. As the campaign says, We Are Making A Difference Through Penn’s Way.

There’s still time to take the Patient Safety Culture Survey! The Survey deadline has been extended and is now available from through Friday, December 20. It is an anonymous electronic survey and only takes about five minutes to complete. The survey provides benchmarking within Penn Medicine and other institutions nationally.

There are surveys for each of Penn Medicine’s hospitals, as well as an office-based survey. Please choose the survey for the place you work the most or feel you can best comment on the workplace culture.

As she has for the past decade, PAH Skilled Care Center (SCC) Administrator Kathy Magnes, BSn, Rn, nHA, is once again collecting items donated from generous PAH employees for the homeless. Donations, which include much-needed toiletries, non-perishable snack foods and clothing, will be divided and distributed via festive gift bags to the homeless throughout the PAH neighborhood on early Christmas morning by Magnes and her family.

Over the years, the gifts bags being distributed have grown from only 10 to over 45. If you’d like to contribute to the gift bags, please drop off donations by december 23, to Kathy Magnes in the Skilled Care Center, 5th Floor, Spruce Building.
