The Amazing Spider-Man

The film The Amazing Spider-Man was produced by Sony when they created an alliance with Marvel. In the process they used horizontal and vertical integration in various ways, along with cross media ownership.

Sony Music

The music and audio in the film would have been made by Sony music. This is an example of vertical integration, as instead of having to outsource their music, they can keep it within their business. This stops them spending money, as it just moves around within the conglomerate. It also promotes their own artists, as people will be attracted to the artists, who could be owned by Sony.

Home Entertainment & Sound

Sony home entertainment and sound are a branch of Sony which sell electronic devices for home use. This is another use of vertical integration, as they not only own and sell the movie, but they may also sell what people use to watch the film (i.e. TVs, Stereos etc.). This means that their brand becomes a branch, as they can reach into different areas and become more recognisable.

Colombia Pictures

Colombia pictures are owned by Sony, but they weren’t always. This is an example of horizontal integration, where a company will acquire or merge with competitors in the same industry sector. This is useful, as there is no longer a threat of competition, and they also attain all assets that belonged to the company they have acquired. This also leads to large companies becoming a conglomerate.

Activision - Blizzard

Activision is a child company of the blizzard organization. Activision are responsible for the Spiderman video games. They therefore form an alliance between themselves, in order to benefit both parties. This allows both companies to maximise their profit, because they can work off each others success.
