1.Stay away from predators

Predatory publishers will publish without peer-reviewing, title their journals with meaningless words such as ‘global’ or ‘advanced’, and make a number of false claims. Stay clear of these, they can be very expensive for your career.

2.Look for verifiable claimsYou can verify if journals are members in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Open Access Scholarly Publishers’ Association (OASPA), and INASP Journals Online (JOLs).

3. Understand the open access modelThere are many excellent open access journals that charge fees, such as those in the PLOS family and BioMed Central; make sure you carry out steps 1 and 2 to get the right journal for you.

4. Don’t be swayed by the impact factorImpact factors aren’t comparable across fields and often journals without impact factors might be the best ones for your research.

5. Know your audienceWho are the readers you are targeting? Are they part of your research community? Would they be able to build on your findings? Seek advice from senior colleagues if you are unsure.
