A lot of people have this misconception that rash guards are over-priced versions of compression tops, which not true, of course. While it's true that for some sports, such as Brazilian jiu jitsu, the fit and the colour are more important than the fabric (because the uniform regulations demand that the shirt cover a certain amount of the body and reflect the rank of the wearer) for many other sports, the blend of the fabric is just as important.

In those instances, rash guards are the best option. They are comfortable to wear, made of quality fabrics that wick sweat away from your skin, and they dry out quickly when they get wet. In addition, the very tight weave of the fabric means that they can keep you cool while still offering good protection from the sun. When you are surfing or swimming, you do not want to have to stop to reapply sunscreen all over your body every couple of hours. Wearing a good rash guard that covers your torso and arms is a great option.

For example, if you are engaging in outdoor and water sports, you cannot wear loose fitting t-shirts because they will stretch or cling when they get wet. You probably wouldn't want to wear a low quality blend of compression top either because it will become heavy when waterlogged and uncomfortable to wear. It may also break down from exposure to salt water or chlorine.

Check the Weave

Note that not all rash guards are created equal. Rash guards are made of a blend of polyester and spandex or lycra, and you want to make sure that there is enough elasticity in the garment to promote a good fit.

If you plan to wear the rash guard outside in the sun, then the colour is important, too. Light coloured rash guards can reflect sunlight back up onto your face, and this may increase the risk of sunburn in those areas. Darker colours absorb the light, which is usually better however, dark-coloured rash guards may make you full uncomfortably warm.

Printing Options

Another thing to consider is the printing on the rash guard. The best form of printing is sublimation printing. This means that the ink is absorbed into the fabric, and will not stretch or warp when the garment is used daily.

It also means that the pattern will not peel or flake when the garment is washed. Sublimation printing is more expensive than screen printing but having a garment or rash guard that will look good for quite a long time is worth paying for.

If you are interested in compression clothing and rash guards then you are probably an athlete so you owe it to yourself to choose clothing that fits well and that looks good. The UV protection and sweat wicking attributes of high quality rash guards are just some of the bonuses of those garments.

A properly fit rash guard will give you good freedom of movement and will also help improve circulation and reduce muscular fatigue. For indoor sports, they can also act as a protective layer to prevent skin infections, chafing, and other injuries that are normally associated with your training.
