It is the most horrifying dream for any corporate film maker to shoot in low light conditions. It becomes an alarming situation even for experts to get best footage in such bad lighting conditions. We have to understand that we can’t have sufficient light wherever we shoot.
Here are a few things that you need to consider before you shoot under low light conditions.
SCHEDULING A PRE-SHOOT VISIT/RECCE IS ALWAYS
BENEFICIAL
Even though it may spend some small chunks of money, butscheduling a pre-shoot recce can do wonders. Not only you canknow their facility very well, but also understand exactsituation . Through this way, you can inspect the shooting site& its lighting requirements.
ADD SOME NATURAL LIGHT
As soon as you realize there is insufficient light, move towardseach window or door present at the shooting location and openit. By that, I mean to unlock every source of natural light thatcan fill the location to get a better video. Use reflectors tobounce the light on your subject
LOWER THE APERTURE
Yes, lower the f-stop to the minimum you have in yourcamera, f-stop 2 is good but f-stop 1.4 is even better. The
wideopen aperture will let the more light enter into the cameraand will turn the poor light condition into a manageable one.
ADJUST THE SHUTTER SPEED
At a shutter speed of 1/2 you can capture 8 times more lightthan at a shutter speed of 1/16th. But, if you will use a verylow slow shutter speed from 1/2 to 1/30 to compensate for thelow lighting, any motion – camera movement or action in theframe will look blurry. However, to avoid motion or blurrinesskeep the shutter speed between 1/30 to 1/50 seconds.
INCREASE THE VIDEO GAIN, ISO
This should be the last option to improve your lightingcondition. At a higher ISO your camera will always
producemore noise (grain) than at a lower ISO.
USE PRIME LENS
During a low light shoot, one’s limited to a shutter speed of1/30 sec with a typical zoom without increasing ISO. However,a prime lens with aperture f/1.4 will enable a much fastershutter speed of 1/250 sec.
If you have already shot your video on a higher ISO, you willcertainly have noise in the footage. But, the good thing is,you may reduce the video noise to an extent during editingstage with the help of filters and plug-ins. Buy a suitablenoise reduction plug-in for your video editing software, run iton your footage and then you’ll possibly observe someenhancements.
Now, you know what exactly you have to do when you areshort of light. I hope these tricks will help you get over yourfear of shooting under low light conditions. Give your Bestshot!
Keep Calm & Shoot Awesome Video !!
