3 part narrative

The three-part narrative structure can be seen as:

1. Beginning → Setting, character and a starting point for the narrative are established.

2. Middle → relationships between characters become complicated. Conflict increases. Instability is moved towards a point of crisis.

3. End → the crisis reaches a climax. Some things are resolved, some unresolved. A new stability is indicated or established.

Our 3-part narrative

BEGINNING → the male character wakes up from his sleep and is clearly missing his long-lost love.

MIDDLE → the male character is having flashbacks and daydreaming about the times he shared with his female friend. He's reminiscing on the memories they had.

END → the lovers are finally reunited

The story isn't in chronological order.

It fits in with the 3-part narrative because of the flashbacks and cross cutting on parallel action.

4 part structure

This theory looks at these topics:

1. What problem does the story examine?

2. What solution does it offer?

3. What is the background to the story? That is, what do we need to know in order to understand the problem.

4. How should the solution be evaluated?

Our 4 part structure

Our background → the love story

Our problem → the character is missing his love

Our solution → she turns up on the doorstep, they are reunited

Our evaluation → will she get back with him?
