VDOT conducted a study of the Hunter Mill Road and Dulles Toll Road interchange in 2000, but no formal action was taken

NVRC, Hunter Mill Road Traffic Calming Study, 2006
The study was sponsored by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and completed in 2006. It provides both a traffic calming conceptual plan for Hunter Mill Road, as well as context sensitive roadway design techniques, as referenced in the Comprehensive Plan.
Existing Conditions - Geometry
• Hunter Mill Road• Type B Minor Arterial
• 1 Lane in each direction (north of Sunset Hills Road)
• 2 Lanes Northbound, 1 Lane Southbound (south of Dulles Toll Road)
• 35 miles per hour

Findings/Conclusions
• AM Peak Hour (Existing) – Dulles Toll Road EB Ramp is source of congestion northbound
• AM Peak Hour (Existing) – Crowell Road stop sign is source of congestion in both directions (northbound & southbound)
• PM Peak Hour (Existing) – Sunset Hills intersection is main source of congestion in both directions

Findings/Conclusions (Cont’d)
• By 2030 traffic conditions are anticipated to degrade
• At the EB DTR ramps: The ramp goes from LOS D to E during both periods and the intersection degrades from LOS B to C in the PM.
• At the WB DTR ramps: The ramp goes from D to E in the AM and E to F in the PM. In the PM the intersection degrades from a LOS D to E.
• Installation of signal at Crowell reduces delay in the long term
