With over 20 years in the business of recruiting marketers in the technology space, marketingmoves have seen it all when it comes to CVs: those with a clear wow factor and others that go off with more of a fizzle than a bang…

Sometimes even the best marketers, though experts at promoting products and services, struggle to sell themselves on paper.

Here is our top tip checklist, to make sure you’re not selling yourself short.

1. Share your achievements

SHARE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS1

Show how much of an asset you could be for a new company with an achievements-based CV.

These need to be specific, measurable achievements, for example:

• % increase in CTR, in traffic, in customer base• Number of leads and revenue generated

THE RIGHTLENGTH2

A neat one or two pages is optimum unless you have so much valuable experience or success that it would be a loss.

For example, a marketer who has done a lot of varied contract work might need more space.

Its always best to aim to be concise - we recommend bullet points!

EASY ON THE EYES3

A well-formatted CV is a pleasure to receive.

White space is easy on the eyes, as are readable font sizes and headings to differentiate between sectors.

NO BLIND DATES4

Its best to make sure you clearly date your past employment, with the month and year you started and finished in role.

Otherwise potential employers / recruiters might question why you have left that information out.

TELL A STORY5

A personal summary outlining who you are and what you are about can help you create a strong impression.

You will be remembered if you can bring in that wow factor at this stage.

NO DISAPPEARING ACT6

Mention all you relevant skills.

Many companies now look for experience with marketing automation tools like Marketo and Eloqua, or proficiency with certain kinds of software or online platforms.

So don’t leave these off, you might not have the chance to pull them out of your hat later!

LIKE A WELL-TAILORED SUIT7

To tailor your CV to a role, call attention to the side of your experience that is most relevant. Potential employers want you to get straight to the point on what you can do for them.

For example, if you’re applying for an event management role, go into more detail about your event successes – who attended? What impact did it have on business?

DRESSED TO THE NINES8

You wouldn’t attend a formal event in jeans, nor should you dress down your job title with a cheap abbreviation.

Spell out your job title in full. With the rise of CV-reading software, this may have become even more crucial.

SAVE THAT CREATIVE SPARK9

Some companies appreciate infographic and creative CVs. They can be fun to receive, but are often lacking in substance. You don’t want to be so creative that you end up saying very little. This is not a time where a picture says a thousand words.

We prefer the classic CV format, and say save that creative spark for your next big role!
