influences,contributors,andrecurringthemesthroughoutthemusicandlyrics.Our

socialmediastrategyismeanttoencourageexistingfanstobuythealbumaswellas

gettingnewlistenersinterestedinJohnson,hispersonality,andhismusic.Interms

oflisteners,ourmaintargetaudiencewillbemenandwomenages18-34.Todo

this,wewilltargetpopularmediainthemusicindustrysuchasPitchfork,Rolling

Stone,Billboard,andFuse.Bycombiningbehind-the-scenesinformationonthe

albumaswellasourowncreativityandstrategy,weintendtoinspirereportersto

writeaboutthealbumandeverythingthatwentintoitscreation.

schoolwhenheandfellowmusiciansDanLebowitzandSteveAdamssparkedan

inseparablefriendship.TheirbandL.A.G.helpedintroducehimintolive

performancesastheyplayedaroundtownduringhistimeattheUniversityof

CaliforniaSantaBarbara.HisbandthentraveledtoAugusta,GAwheretheywere

mentoredandinfluencedbythelegendoffundandsoulJamesBrown.Hisstyle

helpedshapeZachintothegenre-crossingmulti-instrumentalistheistoday.In

2005,heteamedupwithhisoldcollegepalJackJohnsontoworkontheacclaimed

albumInBetweenDreams.

LosAngeleswherehislongtimefriendJPPlunierintroducedTopoltoJackJohnson.

In2005,hecollaboratedon;InBetweenDreamswithJackJohnsonwhilewritingtwo

soloalbumsofhisown.

Behind the Dreams

“Loveistheanswer,atleastformostofthequestionsinmyheart,”saysJack

JohnsonashespillsoutthemissionstatementforInBetweenDreams,hisnewest

albumfocusedonrelationshipsanddedicatedtohiswife,Kim.Thesong,“Better

Together”isabouthowlifecanbedeceivinganddifficult,butwhenJohnsoniswith

hiswife,heknowseverythingisbetterwhentheyaretogether.Thedeliveryofan

albumiswhatisimportanttoJohnson,notthesubstance.Overallthisalbumisafeel

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing for Sustainability

JackJohnson’ssophomorealbumgeneratedsalesoveramillion,andthethirdalbum

isprojectedtogeneratemoresales.However,itsnottheimpactonhiscareerthat

Johnsoncaresaboutsomuchastheimpactitwillhaveontheenvironment.

Johnson’sjunioralbumInBetweenDreamswasrecordedinHawaiiatJohnson’sown

MangoTreeStudio.AfterfindingahouseinHawaiiforhimandhisfamily,theidea

cameabouttobuildasustainablerecordingstudio.Tomakethisdreamcometolife,

hecontractedhisbrothertobuildthestudioinJohnson’sgarage.Hewasabletoride

thewavesduringthedayandproducewithhisbandatnight.Thestudioprovides

peaceofmindasitrunson100%solarpowerinadditiontothealbumcoverbeing

printedonrecycledpaper.

Theworld-touringsingerJackJohnson’sthirdstudioreleaseInBetweenDreams

mightnothaveactuallyhappenedhaditnotbeenforhissuccessfulcareerasapro-

surfer.GrowingupontheshoresofOahu,Johnsonbegansurfingprettymuchas

soonashelearnedtoswim.“It'slikewhenyougetyourfirstbike,”Johnsonexplains,

“YougetyourfirstsurfboardinHawaiiwhenyou'reabout5yearsold,and

everybodystartssurfing.”WiththelegendaryBanzaiPipelinejuststepsfromhis

house,thetalentedkidwassurfingtheinfamouswavessinceage12.Afterbeing

invitedtosurfinthePipeMasterscompetitionatage17,Johnsonwasinjuredina

season-endingaccident.ThisbreakfromthewavesallowedJohnsontogetintouch

withhisinnermusicianandfurtherdevelophisstyleasanartist.Hefirstusedthis

musicaltalenttoscorethesurfmovieshewasfilmingincollege.“Peoplestarted

tellingmethattheyreallylikedthesoundtracksofthefilmsandwonderedifwe

weregoingtoputthemout,soIjuststartedkindofrecordingstuffwithmyfour-

trackandpassingitaroundtofriends.NextthingIknew,therewerepeopleoverin

FloridaandTexaswithmybootlegs--itwascrazy!”

Jack’s Jokes

ThecriticallyacclaimedthirdsongoffofInBetweenDreams,“BananaPancakes,”is

oneofJackJohnson’sfavoritetrackstomakeitontothealbum.SomeofJohnson’s

favoritesongsstartoffasjokesorideasthathavenointentionofbeingreleasedona

full-lengthrecord.Johnsonexplains,“Thesongstartedoffasawaytomakemywife

laugh.It’sjustallaboutwhydon’twejustsleepin,makesomebananapancakes,and

hangout;justpretendlikethere’snoworldoutsideofthehouse.”It’sthekindof

carefree,effortlessnatureofsongwritinglikethisthatreallyresonateswith

Johnson.“That’sasongthatyouneverthinkwouldactuallybeontherecord,they

alwaysjuststartoutasajoke.Iftheydomakeonthere,they’reusuallymyfavorite

onesbecausetheydon’ttakethemselvestooseriously.”

Q:Whenperformingonstage,itisveryeasytogetdehydratedandthefirstthingabandmemberwantstodoisgrabawaterbottle.Fansarealsodancingandsingingalongintheaudienceandarecravingwater.But,waterbottlesarebadforourenvironment.WhatwouldJackdointhissituation?

A:Jackandhiscreweliminatedtheuseofsingle-useplasticwaterbottlesontourbyfillingupatbackstagewaterrefillstations.FanscouldevenfilluptheirownwaterbottlesforfreeattheAllAtOnceWaterStationsthatwerelocatedinthevenues.Jackevencreatedareusablebottlecalled‘KleanKanteen’andfanscanpurchasethebottleattheshows.

Asamusician,producer,surfer,andphilanthropist,onemightsaythe
