HISTORYIn 1863,William Worral Mayo(18191911) came toRochester, Minnesotaas an examining surgeon for the military during theAmerican Civil War.

Both his sons, William James Mayo (18611939) andCharles Horace Mayo(18651939) attended medical school.The founders of Mayo Clinic are the Mayo brothers Will and Charlie, Dr. Stinchfield, Dr. Graham, Dr. Henry Plummer, Dr. Millet, Dr. Judd, and Dr. Balfour in 1889.In 1919, the founders, with the exception of Dr. Graham, created the Mayo Properties Association, and their private practice became a not-for-profit entity.

A $5.3 million NIH grant to identify vascular risk factors in aging and dementia. The grant is one of the first given for the National Alzheimers Project Act.
