New Rules for Lab Testing of Cannabis in Oregon has Problems: 2017 Promises to be the Year of Solutions to Problems Started in 2016

Early in 2016, Oregon state legislators passed a law requiring regulators to standardize cannabis product testing, an initiative the industry supported because it would require more accountability from the labs and boost the trade’s legitimacy. On October 1st, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) set out to protect cannabis consumers by establishing strict testing standards to address a safety issue concerning the use of pesticides and herbicides. Unfortunately because of this, they have inadvertently created a supply shortage for Oregon’s marijuana businesses, causing a severe decrease in revenue and many layoffs and the closure of many dispensaries. In addition, it has driven the consumers back to the black market, which has a much higher health risk. A significant amount of cannabis failed to pass state testing standards in the last two months, accounting for the lack of available product on the shelves. Oregon Health Authority (OHA) officials have acknowledged the problem and the massive complaints, but say the changes are necessary to protect public safety. Only a few out of the dozen labs in Oregon have received accreditation to test for toxins. With such a small number of fully accredited labs, there is now a considerable waiting time for results and consequently, the product moving from growers to stores has slowed considerably. The lack of supply has affected retail availability of both recreational and medical marijuana, including flower and edibles. “We’ve seen some waits that have caused supply-chain-related issues and impacted people in terrifying ways,” said Ford Pearson, founder of Green Rush Advisory Group, a marijuana consultancy in Portland. “But overall I think it’s a very strong program and we’re starting to see progress in better issuances of licenses and the lab issues being worked out.” “It’s just like every other recreational marijuana program,” Pearson said. “It was a brilliant job, and even with a brilliant job there are characteristics you simply cannot anticipate. The lab issue is a good example of that.”

Whitney – founder of Whitney Economics, a cannabis-centric research and consulting firm in Portland, says that 16 out of 72 marijuana businesses that responded to his survey, or 22%, said they are failing; Those that are surviving are struggling. In addition, 81% said they were experiencing supply problems that have forced to raise their prices. Lastly, according to Whitney, 39% of businesses said they had to raise prices by 25%-50%, while 35% had raised prices by 10%-25%, and 26% saw price increases of less than 10%. Roughly 43% reported losing $20,000 or more per month since Oct. 1, while 53% reported sales declines of less than $20,000 per month, according to Whitney’s survey. Another 11 out of 72 respondents plan to lay off five to 25 employees. Lost revenue has created a myriad of problems. Test results that used to have approximately a three-day turnaround are now a month or more. Whitney’s report cites testing turnaround times went from about five days to 14-21 days since the new law went into effect. Whitney says the problems are unreasonable testing standards, which, Whitney said, have translated into test failures in 40%-60% of submissions.Donald Morse, Executive Director of the Oregon Cannabis Business Council says, “they’ve set standards that are almost impossible to comply with,” and “they’re disallowing things that they allow on everything else.” Morse gives credit to OHA for trying to protect public safety but says there haven’t been any pesticide-related health problems since Oregon legalized medical cannabis in 1998. “They’ve gone all these years and nobody has gotten sick, nobody has gone to the hospital,” Morse said.Modie said that just because no one has reported pesticide-related illnesses doesn’t mean the cannabis people consumed was safe. “Unfortunately, a lot of product that passed the recent tests that have failed show us it shouldn’t have passed,” he said. “I suspect there is a whole lot of product out there that had pesticides on it that shouldn’t have had pesticides on it.” Due to lack of funding to complete certifications, OHA says they are understaffed to move any faster. Spokesman for the OHA, Jonathan Modie, the agency responsible for lab testing and overseer of the medical market, states that the existing labs have said they can handle the testing workload, but he acknowledged

more facilities would help. “I can’t speculate what a good number of labs would be … Would more labs be better? Absolutely,” Modie said. The supply shortage has been compounded by Oregon’s decision to move its recreational market in October to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC), to oversee that market. Only a handful of infused product makers have OLCC licenses, leaving many retailers struggling to find concentrates and infused products. “I only have three or four edibles companies to buy from, as opposed to a couple hundred, a couple months ago,” says one dispensary owner, adding that his store used to carry about 20 varieties of shatter but now has only five or six, and his flower selection has also declined. Most believe this won’t completely sink the industry as a whole, but it will kill many companies. To further stress the medicinal dispensaries, under state guidelines, growers and cultivators cannot supply both recreational and medical stores. Many medical suppliers are now focusing on the recreational market, leaving medicinal dispensaries desperate for products.Industry professionals understand that there must be standards and policies, however they are hopeful those can be more reasonable in the future. “We’re not advocating that there be no testing,” said Morse of the Oregon Cannabis Business Council. There is also hope several new labs will be certified soon, which should ease the supply crisis.

LEGISLATORS MOVE TO DELAY THE ENACTMENT OF VOTER-INITIATED MARIJUANA LAWS

Washington, DC: Legislators in a number of states are pushing forward measures to delay the enactment of several voter-initiated marijuana laws.

In Arkansas, House lawmakers unanimously voted in favor of legislation, House Bill 1026, to postpone the deadline for establishing the state’s new medical marijuana program by 60 days. 53% of voters approved Issue 6 on Election Day, which called on lawmakers to regulate the production and dispensing of medical cannabis within 120 days.

In Maine, leading House and Senate lawmakers have endorsed emergency legislation, LD 88, to delay retail marijuana sales by at least three months. Under the voter-initiated law, rules regulating the commercial marijuana market are supposed to be operational by January 1, 2018.

In North Dakota, Senate lawmakers unanimously passed emergency legislation, Senate Bill 2154, to postpone the deadline for the enactment of the North Dakota Compassionate Care Act. Sixty-four percent of voters backed the measure, which gave lawmakers a 90-day window to regulate the distribution of medical marijuana.

Massachusetts’ lawmakers previously enacted legislation imposing a six-month delay on the licensed production and retail sales of marijuana. Legislators are also debating making additional changes to the law, including raising the proposed retail sales tax and limiting the number of plants an adult may grow at home.

In Florida, health regulators are also calling for changes to Amendment 2, which passed with 71% of the vote.

NORML Executive Director Erik Altieri strongly criticized the proposed changes and delays, calling them “an affront to the democratic process.” He added: “Voters have lived with the failings of marijuana prohibition for far too long already. Lawmakers have a responsibility to abide by the will of the voters and to do so in a timely manner.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE COMMENTS ON CONFLICT BETWEEN STATE/FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS

Washington, DC: United States Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions responded to questions on Tuesday with

regard to how he believes the Justice Department ought to respond to states that have legalized the use of marijuana.

While testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Sessions indicated that the agency’s future actions will be largely determined by federal priorities and resources. Notably, he called the federal priorities outlined in the 2013 Cole memorandum to be “truly valuable in evaluating cases” worthy of federal intervention, and did not overtly indicate that the incoming administration would take action to rescind those guidelines.

The Senator also acknowledged that marijuana remains federally classified as an illicit substance and that it is the responsibility of Congress, not the Justice Department, to amend federal laws. “One obvious concern is the United States Congress has made the possession in every state and distribution an illegal act,” he said. “If that’s something that’s not desired any longer Congress should pass a law to change the rule. It is not the Attorney General’s job to decide what laws to enforce.”

For more information, please contact Erik Altieri, NORML Executive Director, at (202) 483-5500

Business owners Katrina and Tony have spun two amazing things together, cannabis and yoga. A

new and growing trend of canna-yoga, is taking the recreational and medical states by storm and Herb N’ Yoga is no exception! By blending cannabis with the therapy of yoga, it promotes relaxation and can bring you to a higher level of consciousness. The studies are clear on the cannabinoids, THC and CBD. The American Cancer Society states that THC “can help relieve pain and nausea, reduce inflammation, and can act as an antioxidant.” It also states CBD, “can help treat seizures, and can reduce anxiety and paranoia.” According to the Livestrong Foundation, marijuana “can help reduce symptoms of muscle tension or muscular aches or pains.” Muscle tightness, spasms, and twitching are all found to decrease when smoking marijuana. Sounds like a perfect match doesn’t it?

Katrina’s eight year career in the healthcare field prepared her with a special insight into a bio-individual, holistic approach. After being offered a high paying position in her field, she discovered the modern medical world was no longer in alignment with her personal

beliefs and set out on a path of alternative wellness options. Tony, meanwhile, has built his career excelling in management, training, leadership and dedicating himself to serving others and giving them a high quality customer service experience. On this path, her and her husband have been changing their nutrition and lifestyle in order to ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. Slowly through the art of meditation, yoga, natural healing, and improved nutritional habits, they are showing their family and community a better path to their relationship with food and the art of yoga. After a dedicated home practice, Katrina decided a transition to yoga therapist made the most sense. Teaching, volunteering and helping others is their uniting passion. Once they found the connection between cannabis use and their love for yoga, there was no stopping them; All they needed was a catchy name! Their goal is to build a bridge between the cannabis connoisseur and yoga enthusiasts.

Right now classes are available at the Patient Grower Network (PGN) Lodge, every Saturday from 4:00 to 5:00pm with an obvious break at 4:20. BYOB! (bring your own bud). Cost for a class is $5.00 with PGN’s additional $5 door fee.

PGN is located at 4090 Cherry Ave. in Keizer, Oregon 97303. It is a membership lodge where you can consume on site and they have events with information available on their facebook page.

C uvée means to take two wines and mix them together; In this case, we are mixing two strains of marijuana. This marijuana strain, cuvée, certainly won’t let you down with

a cross of TGA’s Pinot Noir and Space Queen. About 50% of certain phenols have an unusual chocolate smell once hash is made. Other phenol characteristics have cherry and chocolate/cherry combo!

The best trait of growing cuvée is it matures 3 weeks early and yields heavily outdoors. A typical 8 week strain buds out 2 weeks early, which is why it’s Subcool’s favorite strain to grow outdoors. It’ll turn reddish-orange and purple at the end of season. Last but not least cuvée is an amazing hash producer! With it’s wine and chocolate appeal, this beautiful flower is certain to be a favorite of yours for Valentine’s day!

MOSS – reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest, green, soft, inviting, growing.

CROSSING – a destination, crossroads, or a place you would like to visit.

“We don’t just want to sell high-quality cannabis. We are a destination and lifestyle brand. We are selling products to improve healthy customer relationships with their body, and overall quality of life. We pride ourselves on being a dog friendly shop- #dogsofmoss, want to celebrate the stylin’ stoner- #mossin, and also the active, outgoing cannabis consumer and our amazing surroundings- #adventurewithmoss.”

They must be doing something right They recently were voted “Best New Business” for 2016-2017 by readers of the Eugene Weekly.

The first time I went to Moss I remember looking at their sign hanging above the door and thinking, I already love this place. Walking into the door on the left is an inviting waiting area with magazines placed on a delicate table, and to the right a cheerful receptionist waiting to check you in. The tremendous vibe is just the beginning of this place. You walk through the reception door into the actual store, and the forest chic design of the store matched with a group of amazing, knowledgeable employees, and shelves filled with jars of some of Eugene’s top-shelf cannabis makes this one of my most favorite dispensaries. The owners of MC, Cam McNeeley, Sylvan Magnus and

Heidi Fikstad have created a truly special environment.

The origins of the idea for Moss started with Sylvan. After his personal health success story of completely putting all symptoms of multiple sclerosis into remission within 6 months time, back in 2014, Sylvan felt inclined to share what he believes was one of the key components of his recovery with the world: cannabis.

Sylvan declares, “I took cannabis in three different forms, in addition to many other dietary and lifestyle changes to get to where I am today. This is why some original core company values included and still include compassionate and wellness-based care along with health and product education. Looking around the industry at the time, we noticed a niche missing from the existing dispensary market, so we made a plan to meet that need. That is how Moss Crossing was born. Essentially we set out to create the kind of dispensary where we would shop, plain and simple. Something that was more accessible and inviting to the average consumer. We wanted to re-imagine the stoner culture of the past and its negative associations by creating a more vibrant, friendly, well-designed, living atmosphere. Our goal was to set a new industry standard and create a new cannabis experience, not quite high-end, but classy and tasteful.”

What does the future of Moss look like?“Develop our strengths and work

to further distinguish ourselves from the competition. Keep re-defining and

normalizing cannabis in a beautiful light. Set the bar higher and higher - pun intended - Continue building, expanding, and fine-tuning our brand through retail and online presence. We hope to have our online retail store up and running in the first half of 2017. This will be an extension of our shop and feature all of the finely curated, wonderful products we love and want to share with the world.”

These busy folks plan on developing an in-house topical line- appropriately called “Moss Made”. These guys are also putting out their own book, “Sungrown, A Grower’s Guide to Cannabis” which will be available soon at their Friendly St. location.

Moss recently switched over to being a recreational shop at the beginning of the year, but their creed is to maintain their helping, caring relationships with their medical patients and provide knowledge for all to prosper from the thousands of benefits of cannabis.

We just paired Moss Crossing Reserve’s (96 Pt) True Blueberry in our Fruit & Flower cover story. Their in-house flower is honestly some of my favorite in the state. So next time you’re in Eugene, go by and visit our friends at 2751 Friendly St., or if you’re a little too far but want to catch some vibes check out them out on Instagram @mosscrossing

Growing up in a small community with a huge family and even bigger network of friends has been a tremendously comforting thing. Even now its easy for me to believe that

no matter, I would have a home and people that would be there for me. Unfortunately, any circumstance can change in a moment and more individuals were never lucky enough to have this sense of safety. Individuals across the county are finding themselves without options, unemployed, sick or alone. We are seeing this reality every day especially in Portland, Oregon, where there is an uneasy presence of homelessness.

In a truly unfortunate epidemic, more than 4,000 people sleep in the streets and in shelters on any given night in the city of Portland. The City, good samaritans, police, firefighters, and families across the population have made a significant effort to supply our homeless brothers and sisters with food, clothes, and shelter. However even with all of the help that is given daily, it’s simply not enough. Right after the new year during one of the largest snowstorms of the season, four lives were taken in the night by hypothermia. Then, a week later, an even more colossal snowstorm swept the city, taking the lives of others, including a new mother and her infant. We made an effort through the thirteen inches and counting to hand out gloves, jackets, blankets, and anything else we could to keep our friends warm, but the deep snow and slick roads severely impeded our progress. Some volunteers couldn’t even leave their homes. I learned quickly that the welcome isn’t always warm going into the camps where people are cold, starving, and desperate. Many are thankful, but for some its hard to be when you have nothing, and no desire to have more than that.

The city currently allows temporary structures from 9:00 pm until 7:00 am for the homeless to seek shelter how they can. Dispersed across the city, some reside in broken down cars, cardboard enclosures, tents overflowing with clothes, and in huge groups beneath bridges. They bundle together, trying to make it through the cold season. Early last year a group of neighborhood associations and businesses attempted to sue Mayor Charlie Hale and the City of Portland for his “misguided and unlawful” policy which allowed the homeless to camp on public property overnight in the city. However Mayor Hale lifted this “safe sleep guidelines” last August, and the lawsuit against him was dropped. The missions and shelters around the city do a tremendous job, but their beds are full every single night and they are constantly in need of volunteers. The reality that there have been so many efforts to address this epidemic, and we are still facing a state of emergency city wide truly speaks to the magnitude of the issue.

Still, Mayor Hale and the city have been developing massive plans to address homelessness that have been in the works for over a decade. Back in 2005, neighboring Multnomah County developed “A Home for Everyone” plan which planned to house

approximately 84% of the 12,000 people living homeless within the county. They achieved this by implementing STRA (Short Term Rent Assistance) to get individuals and families back on their feet. More recently, “Cut Homelessness in Half” put in effect by the City of Portland, has raised $30 million which is set to take effect in July to provide necessary means to get our friends back on their feet. Similar initiatives in other states have seen exceptional success in ending homelessness, particularly for those with psychiatric disabilities and substance use disorders. In Colorado, “Housing First” effected a 70% decrease over a 2 year period in emergency service costs accrued by chronically homeless individuals living with disabilities.

The fact is that we the people have become accustomed to caring more about the details of our own lives, and less about the suffering of others, myself included. In an effort to shift my perception I’ve began the practice of simply helping where I can, and it’s so much easier than you would imagine. Most of us get to live our daily lives unaware of the mental illnesses and other disorders our citizens deal with. A lot of these people who are struggling and homeless are simply in dire financial straights, some lost a loved one and lost themselves, others lost their jobs and lost the will to try, and some were abandoned without any help from a young age. We so easily dismiss people if they aren’t perfect, but these are circumstances that any one of us could have found ourselves in.

To join the effort, Stoner Magazine is putting together a system of donation bins across dispensaries in Portland, and across the state to raise awareness to help the homeless. Shoes, blankets, clothing, food, gear and toiletries will be picked up weekly and distributed to shelters and camps where shelters aren’t nearby. #KeepPortlandWarm and join the cannabis community in bringing people together to be a helping hand to our friends going through hard times.

A WINE & WEED PAIRING GUIDE

Words by Jared Masters

Fruit&Flower

Grape juice. Cannabis. Grown in lush Oregonian soils from North to South.

Three reds, three whites, paired with six of Oregon’s premier flowers from some of the most prominent growers in the state.

I hope your pallets are cleansed and your minds are open. Because directly after reading this, you will certainly be on the hunt to acquire these tried and true combinations put together by a true enthusiast, and genuine wine and cannabis connoisseur.

All wine scores are based on a classic “100 Point Scale”, and all cannabis flowers have been scored using a 100 point system mirroring the wine scale with minor changes. We started with 18 Wines, and 18 Flowers with 100’s of combinations, between a team of experts. We narrowed it down to the six best combinations.

Here is the result of five grueling days of smelling, grinding, rolling, pouring, drinking, smoking, pondering, wondering, wandering, highs, lows, scoring, note taking, hangovers, science, picking, choosing, and then finally, matches were made, bottles and buds were kicked off the kitchen island, and pairs were forever placed together in a pairing so fair, it will for the rest of eternity be known as, “The Fruit & Flower Pairing of 2017.”

Now that the dramatic intro is over let’s get down to business!

All cannabis will be given the same opportunity by starting it off with the same benefit of 50 points. From that 50 point base score a number of other elements in the cannabis will give it additional points i.e.: color: 5 points, trim: 5 points, aroma: 10 points, taste: 5 points, finish: 5 points, origin: 5 points, cure: 5 points, effect: 10 points.

What do the cannabis scores mean?

86-89 Good cannabis - looks good, smokes good, good quality, good effect.

90-94 Very good, excellent cannabis - delicious, well cured, overall superior quality, typicity, very good effect.

95-100 Exceptional quality cannabis, balanced, classic and highly sought after. Exceeds expectations, epiphany effect, beautiful presentation, incredible taste.

WINE WEED

2013 Cowhorn Sentience + CatsandGravy Medicinals Juicy Fruit

This strain of Juicy Fruit radiates sweet, euphoric fruit fragrances, reminiscent of OG Bubblegum. Delivering hints of early morning dew and peach, with a finish of rich earthy tones scores this strain 92 Pts. Well-cured, well-trimmed. The textural component of this smoke was considerably thicker; different than what I was expecting from this strain but incredibly complimentary to the syrah we paired it with.

The 2013 Sentience (100% syrah) from Cowhorn has a magnificent dark purple color glimmering with accents of ruby red. The nose of this wine takes me to a field of ripening plums and a mess of plump blackberry bushes. Lush tannins extend smooth and plentiful flavors. Excellent finish, scoring 94 Pts.

The combination of these two high quality products grown on the same Estate hits the mark, 9/10 points for an unforgettable experience.

2013 Woolridge Creek Tempranillo + Applegate Gold Purple Hindu Kush

Applegate Gold’s Purple Hindu Kush is what Southern Oregon outdoor cannabis should be. The look, rosy smell and wildflower taste takes me back to my Southern Oregon roots. The purple colors and frosty appearance of this PHK is not only highly desirable but 100% accurate to the origin of the strain. This impeccably grown and cured flower scores 96 Pts.

Woolridge Creek Vineyards 2013 Tempranillo from Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley offers clean aromas of cedar, cinnamon and dark-chocolate covered cherries. Perfectly rounded tannin and a silky long-lasting finish score this red wine 92 Pts.

The acid driven Tempranillo with the earthy roots of classic Southern Oregon outdoor grown bud is an enchanting pair. A very popular choice amongst the team, acquiring 8/10.

2015 Cowhorn Spiral 36 + CatsandGravy Medicinals Presidential Kush

C & G’s Presidential Kush was grown deep in the heart of Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley, on a privately leased portion of the Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden Estate. Drinking wine paired with cannabis grown from the same soil left me looking for relative properties-shared terroir-between the two. The fruit from this white wine blend and the Presidential Kush were both biodynamically grown and harvested, making this a highly desirable combination.

The smell of the 2015 Spiral 36 is truly floral upfront. Aroma of blooming flowers and spring time transform into hints of crisp pear, with biodynamically influences, and finishes with flavors of a honey crisp apple. Refreshing and delightful, 93 Points.

The Presidential Kush has a very earthy, piney smell, scoring 90 points-not too bad for a first time crop. It’s a good smoking flower with effects that are immediate and clean. The earth and pine characteristics of the kush accompanied with the flowering aromas and fruit flavors of the Spiral 36 make this a genuinely Southern Oregonian experience for all of your senses. We give this pairing a 7/10. We expect to see a promising future of fruit and flower coming together in harmony.

2014 King Estate Pinot Noir + TJ’s Organic Gardens Chocolate Kush

This Chocolate Kush undoubtedly smells and tastes like dark chocolate. An immaculate cure, an unfathomable cocoa and coffee bean flavor and a full bodied smoking profile gives this flower 96 points. The effects were layered and continuously enjoyable. I highly recommend this robust Kush.

The initial aroma of King Estate’s Pinot Noir offered an unexpected yet attractive astringency and deeper layers of lush ripe plum. On the front palate flavors of tart cherry and raisin with hints of sweet strawberry on the finish. Smooth and silky tannins slowly cross the tongue. It’s an excellent pinot noir true to the climate of the Estate’s Eugene hills. Score, 92 points.

This chocolate and pinot pairing is a phenomenal experience. Washing down the smoke residue with a small sip of pinot noir creates the sensation that you’ve just ate a dark chocolate truffle. No exaggeration. Pairing these two Eugene native brands is a 9/10 experience!

2015 King Estate Pinot Gris + Moss Crossing True Blueberry

This perfectly trimmed bud was enormous, incredibly dense, and decadently dressed in red hairs. Moss Crossing’s True Blueberry had me in a dream state simply by squeezing and smelling it. Aromas and tastes are true to the strains blueberry origin. Guessing high levels of terpineol. The dripping residue from this joint stained my senses with lilac and blue haze, then continued to haunt me with an active, sustaining high. The effects were happy and euphoric. Score for this quality cannabis, 94 Pts.

King Estate’s 2015 Pinot Gris has a crisp apple aroma, with revealing flavors of pear and pineapple. Brightly acidic, nicely balanced and an elongated finish. 90 Pts.

The blueberry flavor adds a interesting component to the tropical characteristics of the pinot gris. Refreshing for any hot summer pool party or rafting adventure. Overall this combination receives a 7/10.

2015 Brooke Sweet Pea Riesling + TJ’s Organic Gardens MK Ultra

This MK Ultra is an extremely citrusy strain. Perfect presentation, exploding with citrus and lime fragrance. The MKU’s terpenes deliver the same flavor while being smoked; a delightful sensory overload for all to experience. The slowly creeping effects left me relaxed, attentive and in a state of pleasure. Near perfection- 99 Pts.

Upfront, Brooke’s Sweet Pea Riesling offers the perfect amount of sweetness with smooth citrus flavors, honey suckle and paper whites. Perfect for brunch, Brooks Old Vine Sweet Pea Riesling lands at 92 Pts.

MKU’s tangerine peel flavors with the weight and rich qualities of the Sweet Pea Riesling were divinely complimentary, mere perfection. This combination scores an 8/10.

There will also be some suggested “pairings”; when Portlandians get the munchies, they look for the best sweet and salty food available. Think sustainable ingredients, locally-grown produce, hand-harvested salt, and yes: vegan options are available.

Page 18: Stoner Magazine - February 2017 Issue - Fruit & Flower

Ambition is the key to fruition. I dropped out of high school my freshman year only to realize that

success wouldn’t fall in my lap. What is success? How is it measured?

Success isn’t measured by how fat your wallet is. Happiness is what we all strive for in the end. But, also proving wrong all the people who doubted you. My family wasn’t well off, we had our day to day drama like everyone else, and times were hard. Life’s path brought my education to an early halt. I believe everything happens for a reason; That reason being the lessons I learned in my journey from freshman dropout to college graduate, were major lessons high

school could have never taught me. I began college a few weeks after my

seventeenth birthday, and worked hard; I would take my homework from my classes to smoke sessions with friends, almost daily. Cannabis truly helped me through the most stressful times in my life.

I spent all of my free time on homework, often sitting on my bed, staying up through the night finishing it. All I wanted was to graduate. I kept my eye on the prize and strived to get good grades. Finally, through thick and thin, I received my horticulture degree with a 3.75 GPA, during which my entire college experience, I smoked heavily. Each term I would count how many credits

I had left until graduation, wondering if I could do it at all, and at times I wanted to quit. Cannabis helped me concentrate through college. The thing that set me aside from others is that I believed that I could be successful, I believed that I could achieve my goals and I never gave up on my dreams.

I hope this inspires someone out there who is struggling through college to get their head back in the game, light up a doobie, and get that 4.0!

CANNA-SHOPPING FOR STONERSColorado is a pioneer in the recreational marijuana industry

and is leading the way for many states to replicate. The newest addition to this state’s growing marijuana enterprise is a cannabis-themed shopping center.

50,000 square feet is dedicated to Aurora Hemp Marketplace to create a marijuana filled shopping experience. A dispensary, head shop, donuts, a tattoo parlor, and a hydroponics supply center are only a few of the businesses that greet the many customers that stroll through this growing shopping center. Occupancy and rents are up and the marijuana-related businesses have been having a great time networking and creating relationships between the different shops. The dispensary that graces the Aurora Hemp Marketplace called Rocky Road, has partnered with the head shop a few doors down called Myxed Up, offering special discounts to its customers.

If you’re ever in the area, don’t hesitate to stop by this marijuana one-stop shopping center to grab a joint and a donut; you’ll be greeted with many smiling faces!

WILL WORK FOR WEEDAlthough many states are legalizing marijuana for both

medicinal and recreational use, the Supreme Court was not

impressed by lawyer, James Mecca, who attempted to trade his legally acquired skills for marijuana. The man found himself in

need of legal counsel after attempting to represent a previous client of his who had already bought his services with weed. The informant approached Mecca with a deal: Mecca’s legal representation for “a whole backpack full” of “smoke”. Mecca was paid by his client with a half-pound of marijuana that was provided by the sheriff’s office.

The disciplinary board recommended that Mecca receive a fully differed two-year suspension of his license while he was

on probation so that he could continue working. The Supreme Court denied this recommendation, stating the disciplinary board was too light.

James Mecca attended drug treatment and was ordered a one-year suspension from practicing law. Maybe next time, he’ll stay within the law instead of bartering his legal services in an illegal act!

OUCH! THAT STUNG… Although Oregon law allows adults, ages 21+, to possess up to

an ounce of marijuana outside their home, it is not lawful to use it as payment or trade for anything. Unfortunately for a 29-year-old man from Sandy, Oregon he attempted to do just that.

Responding to a Craigslist ad, created unbeknownst by him, by an Oregon State Police trooper, he was overly excited for the cold weather. A snowmobile was being offered in exchange for a pound of weed – 15 ounces more than the legal limit allowed in procession outside a home! Meeting up at a local gas station, the Oregon State Police trooper made an arrest, citing the over-zealous gentleman with possession and delivery of marijuana. Compounding his two new charges, he was also charged for driving on a suspended license.

We must admit… that sting operation was definitely a success for State Troopers! Beware our fellow stoners of local laws so you don’t find yourself caught-up in such a situation.

We’ve all heard about the health benefits of raw juice; whether it be a fresh squeezed cocktail of apples,

spinach, lemons and ginger, or the latest cannabis juice craze. Juicing is especially beneficial because of its high antioxidants from the raw plant material used. When you juice the fresh, raw plant you’re not losing any nutrients like you would when you heat up the plant through cooking or smoking.

WHY DO ANTIOXIDANTS MATTER? The Mayo Clinic states, “antioxidants

are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.”

When the government issued Patent No. 6,630,507 it proved that cannabis contains antioxidants and cannabinoids that are beneficial for human consumption. By juicing raw cannabis you are getting THCA, CBDA, cannabinoid acids; which are non-psychoactive, so they will not give you the high most associate with marijuana.

CHOOSING YOUR CANNABISSelect strains that are proven to be

effective in treating what ails you; different strains produce different results. As the

Marijuana Doctor says, “indica strains are sedatives/relaxants and are effective for treating the symptoms of medical conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, muscle spasms and tremors while sativa strains are more of a stimulant, and are effective in appetite stimulation, relieving depression, migraines, chronic pain and nausea.”

TYPE OF JUICERThe best juicer to use is a masticating

juicer that grinds fruits and vegetables, then squeezes the juice out in the process. Masticating juicers are able to press the maximum amount of juice from the pulp. They also make use of the significant amounts of nutrients contained in the leaves, stems and flower. Use this juicer for fresh blends and pure shots of cannabis juice. Below you’ll find a blended recipe created just for our stoners!

WHERE TO OBTAIN RAW CANNABISSummer is the best season for availability

of fresh cannabis. Finding an outside grower would be your best bet for a steady supply of fresh leaves, flowers and stems. Even better, if you pop a few seeds into the ground in your backyard and you will have an abundant supply of cannabis for yourself.

It’s not about getting high, it’s about getting healthy!

Smoothie Recipe1 small bunch of spinach½ medium cucumber1 lemon, peeled1 small piece of ginger1 cup of iceJuice from 10 grams of large fan leaves, flower and/or stems

Juice your cannabis leaves in the masticating juicer at a slow speed. In a blender add cannabis juice and other ingredients till blended. When finished, sit back and enjoy!

United States Patent: 6,630,507Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. Step 1. Remove any loose resin/ash from the pipe. Hold the pipe upside down, gently tap the piece to remove any remaining particles. Use a pipe cleaner, cotton swab, needle, or other thin object to remove any large, stuck bits of resin that you can reach.

Step 2. Fill a glass bowl with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Purchase 90% isopropyl, as it will clean the pipe quicker. Place the pipe inside the bowl, making sure it is fully submerged in the fluid and no air bubbles are trapped inside the pipe. Allow the pipe to sit in alcohol anywhere from 60 minutes to two hours. Rubbing alcohol will break down the tar and resin, making it easier to remove from inside the pipe. Over time, this can also clean off stains.

Step 3. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the alcohol in the bowl. Salt will act like an abrasive scrubber on your pipe, lifting away the resin in places you can’t reach with a cleaning tool. Use the biggest grains of salt you can find. Coarse or kosher salt is the preferred choice.

Step 4. Agitate the pipe in the bowl, making sure to work the salt into the inside of the pipe. You can also pour salt directly into the pipe and after using your fingers to close off the openings, shake vigorously. Be aware of your surroundings so you don’t accidently hit your glass on something! Keep shaking to get rid of as much resin as possible. Until desired results are achieved, continue to soak your pipe in the alcohol and shake.

Step 5. Remove the salt and alcohol from the pipe with hot water and dispose of it someplace safe, as the odor can be potent.

Step 6. Clean any remaining spots with a pipe cleaner or cotton swab. Wipe off any tough remaining spots by dipping a cotton swab in alcohol and scrubbing them. To remove any water marks, soak pipe for 10-15 minutes in a mixture of warm water and lemon juice. This will leave your glass shining beautifully.

Stoner Madness

What is “Stoner Madness?” Last month we featured some dank flower suggestions that will make all stoners mad with envy or good vibes. This month’s Stoner Madness will feature

some crazy, desperate and hilarious things that stoners have done to get what they want...WEED! We all know that the need to score the good stuff is a challenge especially with the constant battle to pay bills and meet responsibilities. Well, you’re not alone. Read what these Stoner Magazine readers have to say!

FROM CHELSEA IN PORTLANDOne spring night me and the girls were celebrating graduating from college. We had tons of food, drinks and a small bag of nugs to pass around. Well...as the night wore on more and more people were coming and our bag slowly shrunk from a few nugs to dust. We got on Craigslist and found someone who would deliver us a ¼ ounce. Finally after about an hour of waiting they showed up and it was a $150! We didn’t have enough cash so we traded our computer for it. Pretty desperate but it was good weed and we were celebrating! In the morning we realized that it was a pretty bad decision, but it was too late!

FROM BEN IN PENDLETONIt was a sunny Thursday morning and I didn’t have to work that day. I thought, “hey it’s a great day to get high and chill out.” I went to my stash and saw that a mouse had eaten through my stash container and decimated my weed! What was I to do? At the time I was out of money, I had just paid bills. I had NO cash. So I took off on my bike and started collecting any cans that I could find, and i even hit up the neighbors to see if I could mow their yard or do some chores for some extra $$. Finally it was like 7:00 at night and I had $50! By the time I got back home and could smoke a bowl it was 9:00 and I was exhausted. Sitting back I realized that I worked more that day then I would have if I was at my job...and for what? A tiny bag of weed that I was too tired to even smoke! Good times!

FROM CHRIS IN MEDFORDOne time when my car broke down, I ran three miles in the dead of winter to get a dime bag. By the time I ran back I was so cold I couldn’t feel my feet. I was probably experiencing the beginning stages of hypothermia, but it was worth it!

FROM PETER IN BENDBack in the day, I traveled with my band to Los Angeles, CA to record a demo. We wanted to get high and hear our tracks, so one of our friends went out with $50 out of our meager funds to score some herb on Sunset Boulevard. He came back 20 minutes later with a baggie of something so gooey and fluorescent green it looked like grass clippings mixed with a foreign clear glue-like substance. In fact... It was grass clippings, ha! We were outraged and in our 20 year old minds, decided to go find the guy and ask for a refund. We marched out of the studio back onto Sunset and found him. After asking him for a refund, he turned and ran. We were about to chase him when a police car drove up onto the sidewalk, got out, frisked us and asked us what we were doing there. “Don’t you know this is a known drug area?” “Ah...No sir, we didn’t know, we’re just tourists here!” Out $50 and lacking smokeable buds, we went back to the studio and wrapped up our session, naming the song “Budless.”

FROM JAMES IN SALEM It was a really cold winter back in 09’ and like many know, the snow had crippled Salem. I found myself going stir crazy as I was stuck over the West Salem bridge with no weed. I had been hanging out with a couple neighbors of mine and we came up with a genius idea! I had already tried to drive my little car, I called the rabbit, down the street to no avail… but with the help of many hands, I was hoping to get enough momentum going to get me off my street. After slipping and sliding in the snow, we managed to push me on my way. I made it all the way over the West Salem bridge and through Keizer before I got stuck in the 2 inches of snow that littered our valley floor. I was SO thankful when I found myself only a few blocks from my buddies house; I was able to walk to his place and warm up on a game of Halo and hit from the Volcano. It was definitely a successful mission!

FROM TARA IN PORTLAND, FORMALLY OF REDMOND When recreational cannabis became legal in Washington State, I lived in Southern Oregon. I made several trips to Washington to indulge in great ganja but was afraid to bring it back to Oregon since it wasn’t completely legal here. Well, that became a very expensive habit since I don’t drive and had to take a bus, train or fly and then stay in a hotel while there. Eventually I completely changed my life by moving to Portland where I had no friends, no family and no home. I figured for the cost of one trip to Washington for pleasure, I could stay in Portland in a cheap hotel while I transitioned to my new job and found a place to call home. It made sense to me that I could simply ride my bicycle across the bridge to Vancouver to get ahold of my beloved bud so I left everything and everyone I knew behind and entered Portlandia! I thought the only thing that would change for me was convenience in getting high, but I was so wrong! Becoming a Portlander seemed to move me into the center of the cannabis universe. Everywhere I went, people were indulging in weed! I smelled it often in parks, walking or riding down the street or in clubs and taverns, and literally got high from second hand smoke on more than one occasion. Now that it is legal in Oregon I have been thinking about moving back to Southern Oregon to be with my family and lifelong friends but I’m afraid I’ll miss the Portland culture I’ve grown to love! What can I say? I am a true Oregonian and stoner.

O h my friends, I know; There are thousands upon thousands of vape pens to choose from. Check out page 52 and 53 for some supporting info on why I’m so adamant about this particular oil recipe. If you’re looking for a simple,

affordable, on-the-go cannabis vape, I highly suggest checking out Chalice’s hybrid cartridge.

Chalice’s hybrid cartridge has a really clean, smooth hitting recipe. I am personally really susceptible to massive headaches from the majority of other C02 extracted oils. The hybrid oil just released is a hybrid of all of Chalice’s trim. All of their strains artfully blended together creates a high that feels functional, clean, and sustains gracefully. The oil is fully winterized, it’s a wax free product, and contains an organic cotton wick. I’m really digging their three color options for their Vuber batteries, available in red, white or green. They used oversized draw holes and elements to provide better airflow and vapor production in their cartridges. It’s been freezing here in Portland, walking the street and hitting this thing is amazing. Once the chamber heats up you can get pretty generous hits for such a compact pen.

Chalice prides themselves on their knowledge of cannabis and their lab clearly proves it with their top tier concentrates and cannabis oil. With over 30 strains, all of their flower and products are lab tested for THC, CBD, pesticides, mold, mildew and packaged in childproof containers.

Something extremely impressive about Chalice Farms is their laboratory grade grow facilities. The air flowing into the plant’s environment is treated through a series of HEPA and charcoal filtration systems. All of their facilities are treated and sealed with special sealants that inhibit the growth of molds and mildews. They have instituted hospital standard cleanliness to keep everything safe and non-toxic. Impressively enough, these guys have some of the most consistent product on the market today.

Puffco Pro

PUFFCO PRO 2: PORTABLE DAB RIGWords by Guy Greene Photos by Olivia Jayne

After a short hiatus, Puffco has revamped and reintroduced their signature coil based, concentrate-only vaporizer, with the Puffco Pro 2.The first thing I noticed was the stainless

steel design, which looks right at home next to a high end chef’s knife, or an engineer’s caliper. The new smaller body has shrunk to barely over 4 inches and can easily fit in a small purse or men’s watch pocket.

Even though the size has shrunk, the battery has received an upgrade. Right out of the box, I got multiple days worth of use. The atomizer chamber has also been enlarged. How did they gain all this space and still make their smallest pen yet? Magic! Or maybe advances in battery technology? One piece of the Pro 2 that may go unnoticed is the small gear-shaped “splash guard” in the mouthpiece, which does a great job of catching any bits of boiling concentrate before it hits your mouth.

The Puffco Pro 2 is built like a tank. If you want to preserve it’s perfect stainless steel finish, you may want to keep it in the sleek case that comes with it. I’d fault Puffco for not leaving room in the case for concentrate, until I learned about their Prism concentrate carrying cases, which are unique and great!

While I prefer the flavor I get from their other vape, the coil-less Puffco +, there’s no doubt the Pro 2 gets the job done in style and reliability; It can go for multiple days without needing to charge. The Puffco Pro 2 is now available in stores for $89.99.

Glass RootsArtist John Munro has worked the torch for 17 years.

This dry hammer showcases his career long love for fuming, marbles and millefiori cane. He was inspired

during his years following the Grateful Dead. He saw glass pipes emerge onto the parking lot scene by artists like Eugene glass legends Bob Snodgrass and Bob Badtram. Their innovation and experimentation with fuming and color techniques birthed a new industry, and sparked John’s desire to blow glass. In 1998, while living in Arcata, California, he found his opportunity. A close friend offered him space to apprentice in a garage glass studio. John took to the torch and never looked back.

John Munro continued to hone his craft after a move to the east coast. He experimented, watched demonstration videos

and became active on a new glass pipemakers message board. Attending workshops with glass artists Robert Mickelson, Mike Plane, Barry Lafler, and Lewis Wilson taught him a large variety of styles and techniques. He sold his work for many years at music festivals, events and juried craft shows while living out east. His family relocated to Eugene, OR in 2008 and he continued to blow glass in his home studio. The 2011 opening of John and Kristie Munro’s store and studio, Eugene’s GlassRoots, is the culmination of a decade of glassblowing and vending experience. Today GlassRoots, LLC is a large retail store, with a detached studio where John and three lifelong friends blow glass together.

STONER CULTIVATION

Clandestine Gardens

OUT OF THE SHADOWS

When Initiative 502 was passed by voters in Washington State, The liquor control board took charge of regulating the the new marijuana laws, allowing growers like Ian Kaplan to open up his operation named Clandestine Gardens. A play on words based the history of growing this plant, Ian picked a really cool company name for this operation, which is nestled up next to a Northwest border town. Being amongst acres of farmland the only neighbors that were evident were cattle. And when we popped our head inside the door that was marked with a spray painted stencil that read “Under 21 Not Admitted”, we didn’t exactly find any high tech innovations at Clandestine Gardens. But that is exactly how the owner, Ian Kaplan, likes it. Ian is a down-to-earth guy who prefers the old-fashioned way of doing things. His setup can be labour-intensive and his team although hard-working, the crew also likes to have a lot of fun.

Clandestine Gardens was converted over from an old mushroom farm Ian worked at as a teenager. When he took it over, he added a skate ramp to make the place truly his own and create a company culture that represented who were as snowboarders and skaters growing up. What he didn’t change was the large wooden grow tables that existed within the building. These tables-on-wheels are packed so tightly accessibility can become an issue, so when they want to work on plants, they have to roll them into the hallway like a big game of Tetris and hand water each bed. It may

not be the automated but Ian, along with family members and crew have proven they don’t mind getting a little dirt under their fingernails to grow some of the highest quality cannabis around.

As a smaller farm, they produce an average of 12-20 lbs per room. The system runs efficiently for the hand trim crew to finish a week’s worth of work before moving on to the next. There is always work to be done and no need to switch crews. As opposed to growing a single room containing only one strain, Clandestine Gardens is able to offer a consistent variety of high–quality cannabis.

Storing all these plants isn’t easy, however, and Ian’s propagation room gets crowded fast. Because of this, Ian choose to keep fewer mother plants. Ian chooses to mix it up with an arsenal of strains with a total count of approximately 7000 cannabis plants. Clandestine supplies strains that consumers want the most, complete with their own unique labels hand-drawn by a commissioned artist: Pineapple Express, Grandaddy Purple, Cotton Candy, Green Crack, Jackpot, and Clandestine exclusive strains such as 9lb Strawberry, to name a few.

This garden was recently featured as the first episode in the monthly series called Growing Exposed. Created by Jeremy Deichen who has spent the last year filming some of the most incredible gardens in North America and is now sharing those stories with Stoner Magazine to get an insider's look into both the facilities and the

people behind these grow operations. “No two gardens are the same, and

neither are the characters behind the gardens” explains David Robinson the resident expert who has appearances in each show. “What works for Clandestine Gardens may not work for other growers of the same scale. Knowing the ins and outs of the chosen system and its potential pitfalls is crucial. The gardener should understand what the plant’s needs; only then can you manage a system and grow high quality cannabis.”

A self proclaimed hillbilly owner and operator of Clandestine Gardens Ian Kaplan says “We didn’t think we would sell a fricken gram when we started… and now everyday we are sold out”. They have taken a unique way of branding their product and made a real handmade feel out it. Like a piece of art with each strain getting a unique sticker on it, you almost feel bad about throwing away the packaging after consuming the product. Now if you want to check out the complete first episode about this garden, it is available for viewing at www.GrowingExposed.com.

Like a piece of art, packaging is created with unique custom line art from Brazil.

This hardworking hand trim crew processes up to 20 pounds a week.

Amanda Mackay hosts the premiere episode of Growing Exposed, the Los Angeles based show that takes you inside the world of growing cannabis across North America. Created by film producer Jeremy Deichen.

A new era is upon us; The world is a very different place than it was a decade ago. As with the transitions of any era to the next, there are customs we hold onto and improve upon, but

also those that will be forgotten.I clearly recall the days of putting my mom’s butter knife on the

stove until it grew red hot, and then applying some hash to reach the ultimate high with my buddies.

Of course at some point we all badly burnt our fingers, dropped red hot knives on the floor, and caught the carpet on fire a handful of times. This was all dangerous business, and back then, cannabis was also considered dangerous business. It’s laughable at this point. Or is it? Fast forward a decade and we have weed scientists in white coats working in labs with refined methods and technologically advanced machines which extract those magical cannabis constituents. Plus, intelligently designed rigs that won’t set your carpet ablaze. The future is truly a remarkable place for cannabis consumption. Even so…

Have you ever considered who extracted that dab you’re smoking? Are they certified to run that equipment? What are they using to make it? What do these numbers mean? Who’s testing it? What the hell is even in it?

Like many Americans you may be thinking, “so many questions…who cares? It gets me high!” I urge you not to brush the subject off so easily as you may other issues. Luckily for you, I was able to catch up with a true cannabis scientist of Chalice Farms, laboratory manager, Kyle Robinson to address some of these concerns you may now be having.

Can you tell me a little bit about the extraction process? “When you’re running your trim, you can never really know

what’s going to be in there. The state has set fail limits very, very close to the lower quantification limits of the analytical instruments. If your neighbor is over spraying (pesticides), it’s likely that it’s not a

high enough amount to show up in flower tests, but it will definitely show up in concentrates.”

“We (Chalice Farms) are currently running two machines, a MRX Extractor and a VTA, thin wipe film. The extractor pulls cannabinoids from the plant, and the VTA refines concentrated oil into a purer product. With this thin wipe film technology we can run our fractional bands a lot tighter, so we’ve been noticing the potency has been much higher in the 90-95% range. You basically have two grades now, the CO2 oil, which is kind of the fuller spectrum of cannabinoids and you do maintain some of those terpenes. We actually capture all of the light volatiles before we do the extraction, then reintroduce them. But your looking at a better representation of the flower fingerprint, as far as cannabinoid content and terpene content are concerned. Then with the distillate you’re moving to the other end of the spectrum with minimal terpenes and minor cannabinoids, mostly all THC. It’s a more consistent high. It’s definitely different. I personally find it a little more intoxicating. Almost more like alcohol, than a stoned feeling. But others find it very stoney. My background is pharmacology, so I understand it’s completely variable.”

What is going on with testing? Prices are through the roof and the majority of the labs we saw before are non-existent.

“Testing is really shocking, I can’t think of any other industry examples to compare it to where there has been an emerging market that requires testing, and the state has said, “sure, start a bunch of unregulated labs.” I mean there were like 40 labs when I first started in the testing space, and it went down to four after accreditation. I think it’s up to six now, but quite a difference.

What was happening, was these 40 labs were all fighting each other. So it became a race to the bottom. At that point the industry was accustom to $100 lab tests, and $200 if you want it to say

something else. It was really not good for the consumers, and really not great for the labs. If you want to run an accredited lab, it’s going to cost at least a few million in equipment, plus labor, and so on. So how are these labs making any money if they’re only charging $100 per test? It truly put the industry back quite a bit, by setting this expectation for a 3-day turnaround time and $100. All of a sudden we’re looking at three weeks, and eight grand. It’s now insanely expensive. At this point, many have just given up on testing altogether. That’s why it’s so hard to find concentrates on the shelves right now.”

That is extremely concerning. Would we see the effects of smoking “dirty” product?

“In conversation the other day someone brought up cannabinoid poisoning; Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome—or “CHS”—is a condition associated with chronic cannabis abuse. Its three primary symptoms are nausea, abdominal pains and cyclical vomiting, an ailment where you retch or throw up far more often than you should (around 6-12 times per hour).

Before going with the assumption that it’s cannabinoids making people sick, we should honestly ask ourselves what else could be in there? It’s really happening with the people who are getting into dabs or high dose edibles. Years ago I never heard of someone smoking so much that they’re vomiting, with this severity. It’s

relatively new. So is it concentration or is it really adulterants in there? I feel like instead of blaming the product first, maybe we should consider the possibility that people are consuming large amounts of pesticides in inhaled form, and that has something to do with it.”

The moral of the story is, find brands you trust, but more importantly, do some research and know what you’re putting in your lungs everyday! We’ve come a long way from wasteful knife hits, and these powerful cannabis products deserve a closer look.

Breeding Better Cannabis Part 1

Many people collect things as a hobby and we are no different, except, we collect “Elite strains of

Cannabis” usually in clone-only format. In the last 25 years I have collected and grown out hundreds of strains. I have traveled to Holland and attended the Cannabis Cup 7 times and I’ve also lived in Amsterdam. One thing I believe is that the best cannabis in the world is still in North America, grown in some unknown garden and belongs to someone without internet access. We have been lucky enough to collect some amazing examples. Some of my all-time favorites are Genius and Apollo-13 by Brothers Grimm, also Killer Queen and Space Queen by Vic High. Our most potent strain is Jack’s Cleaner, a Pluton + LambsBread + Purple Haze Freak, which can literally make a non-grower puke if they’re not used to her brutal, raw potency. We call it the “they’re coming to take me away” stone. Now, MzJill and I continue this tradition working as a team. She has some of her own favorites as well. The Black Russian strain that gives all of our Sputnik crosses their insane purple coloring came from MzJill via Nebu. Over the past 5 years we have worked with these crosses to create new and interesting varieties. MzJill comes up with her own crosses using her favorites and even helps me pollinate when the males are ready. We grow in a 100% organic soil mix that I prepare myself, using potting soil, bat guano, worm

castings, and other natural soil builders. We feel the biosynthesis that takes place in soil adds something that cannot be measured. We use 10 gallon containers so the roots have lots of room.

We would like to share with you a little of what goes into breeding a new strain but breeding has many complexities that I won’t begin to try and explain here today. I think our main goal was very simple: to combine an extremely potent sativa hybrid with a heavy yielding, ultra purple strain; The results would be a purple strain with the potency added from that parent. What gets tricky is many strains like G-13 are extremely dominant and can take over a cross. When you cross BlueBerry and G-13, usually you just make a foul-tasting, watered down version of both. This doesn’t mean that there are not good Blueberry G-13 crosses, it’s just breeding is not as easy as 2+2=4. There is also a big difference between “breeders” and “seed makers.” Anyone can take a male and pollinate a female. This is not breeding; it is making copies with large variations. Again, if they’re sold cheap, a winner can still be found if enough seeds are grown out. The difference is the selection process of the parent strains.

THE PARENT STOCKSelection of the mother plant (or P1)

was easy, Apollo-13 is one of the top 3 of my favorite strains, and I think it may be the most unique strain we have. Blending

potency and a bizarre putrid, rotting, fruit smell, makes it a one of a kind. Selection of a male Black Russian was not as easy. The first mistake people make in selecting a male is choosing the most vigorous. Remember those complexities I mentioned earlier? Well, the recessive drug traits we seek are stashed away in non-vigorous males. Think about the plant in the wild, the natural progression of cannabis is back to hemp. The drugs strains we have today are a direct result of human intervention. Robert Clark says it better, “In the wild, the early males always win the breeding contest. Without proper selection, these early males cause “acclimatization” of the variety, and a decrease in drug quality. This is the “dominant” state of cannabis. If it were otherwise, why would we need breeders? All you would have to do is let the plants do their own thing and they would become more potent over time, but they don’t. The only way drug varieties ever get better is through human intervention in the natural order.”

So in order to find these recessive traits we choose males based loosely on the following: at time of germination are there any capitate trichomes on the cotyledon leaves? The number and frequency of non-glandular trichomes; this can be a great indicator of future glandular production. The earliest males to show sex get tossed, no ifs, ands, or buts. Dominant males are useless for drug using them has caused more hermaphrodite strains than the world

deserves. If these basics are followed during each male selection process, then this gives us a much better chance of finding the genes we want. This is not meant to be a guide for anyone, just a basic explanation of what a “Cannabis Breeder” looks for when selecting strains to work with and/or improve upon.

Sometimes taste is the desired goal or maybe potency. I have taken cherry-flavored Ortega and crossed it with Killer Queen to create a cherry phenotype called Danny Boy. Danny Boy is done in 48 days and tastes like cherry candy. The famed Jack’s Cleaner was crossed with a BlueBerry to create Batgirl and then JCB males from that cross have created entire seed companies. Our JCB male has blue pollen sacs and drips with resin.

SPUTNIK 1.0

Once the Black Russian + Apollo-13 cross completed, we gave it a name. Sputnik seemed like a logical selection and I think you can see we were beyond successful. We grew-out several seeds and we found that basically, we get two different phenotypes. The first is an eye-candy lady that you see so much of, starting with pink calyx and oozing resin; we knew instantly we had achieved our desired results. Smelling like Blackberry jam and swelling to a wonderful large cola-covered-THC-factory. I will never tire of photographing this girl. At 4 weeks the pink started changing to a magenta color and even the trichomes took on a pink to purple coloring. This particular phenotype, we gave the name Pinky. The other phenotype (Whitey) was a surprise to me and also a valuable learning experience! Whitey exhibited no purple coloring. In fact, the plant was ultra-white and during flowering, she almost smelled like a blue cream soda. As the plant matured it took on a weird pungent smell and before it cured out, MzJill and I both thought it smelled pretty foul. After about two weeks of curing I decided to give it another chance and it knocked my socks off. A grower friend, who sampled it, said it almost gave her visuals. So we knew the cross had potential. Now how to improve on her again?

BACK CROSSINGThe concept of backcrossing, again, is simple in theory.

You only pollinate to your P1 mother plant using sibling male offspring. Selecting a male from the Sputnik 1.0 cross, we then pollinated the Apollo-13 sugar mom using a male selected by the criteria explained above. The first cross can be explained as a 50/50 and the second a 25/75 with 75% of her make-up coming from the Apollo-13 mother. That 75% cross, or Sputnik 2.0, is now complete and ready for the final stage. The seeds arrived at Dr Chronic’s on 4/20, and are now available to the public. The great thing about using this breeding method is you don’t have to stop at 3 crosses; you can always do it again and see what happens. We have a different plan though.

Once Sputnik 3.0 is complete, we will then grow out 100 seeds and select 10 males and 10 females. The best will be used to create “Cubed” Apollo-13; these seeds will be stable and extremely valuable, representing thousands of hours of work. These seeds can be used to create true breeding IBL’s, or used to find more P1’s for future breeders to incorporate into their genetic pool. TGA and Subcool will continue to strive for the best in new crosses and the search for recessive genetics.

*This is the story of how a strain is created. However after this project we found a new mother that we liked more than Black Russian and the search to create more dank strains goes on. You

cannot purchase TGA’s Sputnik, it’s one of those strains that’s in cannabis history.

GROW 101 TERMS

GENOME: The total genetic information possessed by an individual, a breed, or a species.

GENOTYPE: The invisible genetic makeup of an individual organism, which includes alleles which may be recessive and therefore have no visible physical expression.

DOMINANT: Said of an allele which by itself alone will produce a particular phenotype regardless of which other allele may be present on the other matching chromosome of the diploid pair; thus it takes only one copy of the chromosome to cause a dominant trait to be expressed in the phenotype.

P1: The name of the parent to which a hybrid is crossed in a backcross.

F2 GENERATION: The progeny resulting from self hybridization or inbreeding of F1 individuals is called Second Filial or F2 generation.

F1 GENERATION: The progeny produced from a cross between two parents (P1) is called First Filial or F1 generation.

INBRED LINE (IBL): A line produced by at least five generations of sequential inbreeding, self fertilization or backcrossing, accompanied by selection within and between lines so that the individuals are considered to be homozygous, or nearly so.

HOMOZYGOUS: An individual possessing (received from parents) identical alleles for a trait is said to be homozygous or pure for that trait. E.g. plant with RR alleles is homozygous for the seed shape. A homozygous always breeds true for that trait.

PHENOTYPE: The external (morphological) appearance of an individual for any trait or traits is called the phenotype, e.g. for seeds, round shape or wrinkled shape is the phenotype.

CAPITATE-BOTANY: Forming a head like mass or dense cluster, as the flowers of plants in the composite family. Enlarged and globular at the tip.

CINNAMON BLUEBERRY BANANA BREAD MUFFINSCreated by Guy Greene Photos by Olivia Jayne

These muffins are dangerously tasty! So much so, that I highly recommend making a second batch for friends and family! Also, make sure to use over-ripe bananas that are at least half brown and getting squishy. As bananas ripen, more of their starch turns into sugar, making a noticeable flavor difference. This recipe can work for cannabis flower but I recommend trying rosin or another concentrate; Using a concentrate that is lab tested, you’ll have a good idea of how many milligrams are in each serving, and you get less plant flavor.

INGREDIENTS1 muffin pan1 gram or a half gram of your favorite concentrate3 brown bananas, peeled11/2 cups of all-purpose flour1 cup of sugar1/3 cup butter, melted1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon of salt1 egg, beaten1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 cup of blueberries, frozen2 teaspoons of cinnamon (optional but recommended)1/2 cup of chopped walnuts (optional)

These muffins don’t take much time in the oven. I recommend partially decarbing the cannabis before baking. Melt the butter in a small non-stick pan over medium-high heat and cook the rosin for 1-2 minutes; This helps get the most out of your THC. If it starts to smoke, your pan is too hot! Allow the butter to cool for a moment before adding the batter.

In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork until smooth. Stir the melted rosin butter into the mashed bananas. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the blueberries, to the bowl and mix thoroughly. Once mixed, stir in the frozen blueberries. Wipe a tiny bit of butter or cooking spray into each slot in the muffin pan before pouring the batter into it.

Bake for about 15 minutes at 350°F. You’ll know they’re done when you insert a toothpick into the center and it comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool.

Adding blueberries makes these muffins quite perishable, so store them in something clearly labelled in the fridge. They are good for up to a week. Enjoy!

Common termsPipe: A pipe is a very portable smoking device. It includes a bowl, carb, mouthpiece and often a grip/stabilizer. It can be a harsher hit than other options but is a favorite for on-the-go. A carb is covered while the bowl is lit, the smoke then travels through a very short chamber and is inhaled.

Bubbler: This contraption is a mixture of a hand pipe and a bong. The bubbler is filled with water much like a bong, but it is portable like a pipe. A carb is covered while the bowl is lit and the smoke inhaled. The water softens the hit.

Bong: This device sits upright, and the bottom of the container is filled with water until the stem is covered. There is a carb just above the water that you cover as the bowl is lit. The smoke will filter through the water and be released into the chamber. Inhale as bowl is lit; to clear chamber, release carb and continue inhaling.

Bucket Bong (Gravity Bong): This contraption requires two containers. One must be smaller than the other, so that the smaller container fits inside the larger. The smaller has an attached bowl and open bottom, the larger is an open topped container filled with water. When the bowl is lit, the smaller container is pulled up so that the chamber fills with smoke. Remove the bowl and inhale the smoke... waaa laa!

Waterfall: A waterfall is created with one container. A small hole is pierced into the bottom of the container and a bowl is placed at the top. The hole is covered and the container is filled with water. As the bowl is lit, the hole is uncovered and as the water pours out, smoke fills the chamber. Remove the bowl and inhale!
