LIFE ON
WHEELS
Maybe it is the funniest thing in Vietnamese people. It is also the most
discussed thing. The way they are driving cars and riding motorbikes is
crazy! And they are not afraid of doing it!
In truth, they can transport domestic animals, plants, electronic devices at top speed! Just look at these pictures!
It surprises tourists but it is absolutely normal for Vietnamese people. They are really calm and relaxed.
In Vietnam everything can be transported on a
motorbike. It’s the most favorite and the easiest way of transport for
everyone.ALL MIGHTY MOTORBIKE!
Hey there’s enough place for all…10 of them!
FAMILY LIFE
“A WIFE WITHOUT A HUSBAND IS LIKE A BOAT WITHOUT A RUDDER”
Women are traditionally dependent on men and are taught that they have to obey three men in their life. Firstly their father, secondly their husband and finally their oldest son.
“THE FATHER IS TO THE CHILD AS THE ROOF IS TO THE HOUSE”
Disobeying parents is an unacceptable breach of the
family doctrine. The children’s obligation to their parents
extends to their care in their old age. The responsibility
even transcends death when the children are expected to
carry on their obligation through ancestor worship and the maintenance of ancestral
tombs.
THE FAMILY IS THE MAIN
SOCIALIZING AGENT
“IF THE FATHER OR MOTHER LACKS OR FAILS, CHILDREN ARE ALWAYS TAKEN CARE FOR BY AN AUNT OR UNCLE”
Relations between siblings are determined by gender
and birth position. Members of the extended family are
tied closely. It can extend to aunts and uncles taking an
active interest in their niece’s and nephew’s care.
FASHION OBSESSION
The most popular and widely-recognized Vietnamese national costume is the Áo dài (au zai), which is worn nowadays. Áo dài consists of a long
gown with a slit on both sides, worn over silk pants.
It is elegant in style and comfortable to
wear. Áo dài is made compulsory in many
senior high schools in Vietnam, and some
colleges. Some female office workers (receptionists,
secretaries, tour guides) are also
required to wear Áo dài.
People in Vietnam wear mainly cotton clothes. Styles differ in northern and southern Vietnam. In northern part of
Vietnam people wear sandals made of old tire rubber . In southern part men and women normally wear western-
styled clothing. In most rural areas women wear loose shirts with skirts.
They have an amazing peculiarity to use the pyjamas as street clothes ! If you see it you’ll probably be surprised. But if you live in Vietnam for time soon you’ll get used to this unusual local feature.
Apparent ly on a hot sunny day these are
the best choices ever!
NATIONAL CUISINE
Traditional Vietnamese cooking is greatly
admired for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil, and heavy reliance on herbs and
vegetables. Vietnamese food is
commonly ranked as one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.
Vietnam is a country that is criss-crossed with rivers and streams, tributaries and deltas as well as being bounded
by the South China Sea. Fish and shellfish, both freshwater and saltwater, are abundant and as a result
really cheap.
Rice and rice noodles are basic dishes in Vietnamese diet. It is
rather overpowering by Western standards but mainly people
have Pho (rice noodle soup) as a typical breakfast in Vietnam. Pho
is prepared not only in a sophisticated manner but also in the technique which is required to have sweet but pure bouillon, soft but not overcooked noodle, soft and sweet smelling meat.
The best way to refresh oneself on a hot tropical day is to have a
nice cup of green tea! Traditionally, Vietnamese
tea drinking is considered a hobby of the older. Tea drinking would accompany aristocratic activities such as composing poems or simply appreciating
nature.
