Listening vs. Hearing

• Hearing- physical process; natural; passive.

• Listening- physical & mental process; active; learned process; a skill.

• Listening is hard!

• You must choose to participate in the process of listening.

WHY LISTEN ACTIVELY?

• Our brain works four times the speed that someone can speak.• enriches you and those around you.• guides other areas of your life. • builds trust and respect between people• Helps in learning new insights.

Why listening skills are important

• Improves relationships.• Improves our knowledge.• Improves our understanding.• Prevents problems escalating.• Shows empathy.• Builds relationships.• Leads to better results.

Why is active listening difficult?

• preoccupied with difficult situations.• Anxiety can make it hard to listen. • Being angry.• Having an idea in mind of what a person “should do”.

When to Use Active Listening

Inappropriate Routine interactions. Physical emergencies.

Appropriate Organizational Crises. Conflict situations. Giving and receiving

feedback. Brainstorming, problem

solving.

STEPS OF ACTIVE LISTENING

• Hearing.• Focusing on the message.• Comprehending and interpreting.• Analyzing and Evaluating.• Responding. • Remembering.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

• Stop Talking.• Put The Talker At Ease.• Show Him That You Want To Listen.• Remove Distractions.• Empathize With Him.• Be Patient.• Hold Your Temper.• Go Easy On Arguments And Criticism.• Ask Questions.• Stop Talking!

Do you frequently think of other things when others are talking to you?

Do you silently argue with the talker? Do you only selectively hear ideas that fit your beliefs? Do you feel most people have little to talk about that is interesting

or important? Do you frequently interrupt others as they are speaking? Do you silently criticize characteristics of the speaker: voice,

looks, manner of speaking?
