CANCER EARLY DETECTIONCENTRE

CANCER IS A DISEASE WHERE ABNORMAL CELLS DIVIDE WITHOUT CONTROL AND, MOST TIMES, FORM A LUMP (CALLED A TUMOUR) AS THEIR NUMBERS INCREASE. CANCER CELLS CAN INVADE NEARBY TISSUES AND CAN SPREAD THROUGH THE BLOODSTREAM AND LYMPHATIC SYSTEMS TO OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY.

e majority of cancer cases are sporadic, i.e. the disease is not inherited. By pure chance, many cases of common cancers such as breast, colon and lung cancers can appear to run in a family. Your personal risk depends on factors such as your age, family history of cancer and your tendency to inherit cancer genes. ese are beyond your control. Other risk factors that are within our control are not genetic. ese include our lifestyles, diets, smoking and environmental exposures. We must work to reduce or prevent them.

Although great advances have been made in the treatment of cancer, their impact on survival rates has been incremental rather than dramatic. Many cancer patients are also diagnosed relatively late, at which stage their treatment options are often severely limited. Prevention and early detection of cancer are therefore key strategies in our cancer control eorts. You must be responsible for your own health only you hold the key to your well-being.

NOT EVERY ONE CAN SEE IT,PROBABLY WE CAN.CANCER. DONT GET SCARED, GET CHECKED.Cancer is the word that most people dread hearing. But the average survival rate for cancer has doubled over the past 30 years and half of all people diagnosed with cancer now survive the disease for at least ve years.

IF YOU NOTICE ANY UNUSUAL OR PERSISTENT CHANGES TO YOUR BODY OR HEALTH, THE BEST PERSON TO SPEAK TO IS OUR DOCTOR - DON'T WORRY THAT YOU MIGHT BE WASTING OUR TIME. WE WANT TO SEE YOU. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.

SPOTTING THE FIRST SIGNS OF CANCERHere are some of the common signs that are worth getting checked out by your doctor:

An unusual lump or swelling anywhere on your body A change in the size, shape or colour of a mole A sore that wont heal after several weeks A mouth or tongue ulcer that lasts longer than three weeks A cough or croaky voice that lasts longer than three weeks Persistent diculty swallowing Problems passing urine Blood in your urine Blood in your bowel motions A change to more frequent bowel motions that lasts longer than four to six weeks Unexplained weight loss or heavy night sweats An unexplained pain or ache that lasts longer than four weeks Breathlessness Coughing up blood Fatigue

Remember that these symptoms don't necessarily mean you've got cancer, but they could indicate that something else is wrong.

DON'T JUST RELY ON SCREENINGRegular cancer screening is very important. But it cant pick up all cancers. It's easy to start thinking that this alone is enough. So it's still important to regularly check yourself and keep an eye out for any changes in your body.

DID YOU KNOW?Cancer is quite common more than one in ten people will develop the disease during their lifetime. e older you get, the more at risk you are to develop cancer.

BUT TWICE AS MANY PEOPLE SURVIVE CANCER COMPARED TO 10 YEARS AGO ONLY BECAUSE OF EARLY DETECTION.
