Burden of Cancer – India

• Each year 900,000 new cases throng the nation’s hospitals, adding an unbearable burden on seriously over stretched resources.

• Experts predict that by 2020, the number of new cases will grow to an enormous 15 lakh new cases per annum.

• Most doctors acknowledge that with regular screening and awareness, 70% of all cancer is avoidable. The rider is “regular screening, leading to early detection and early recovery”.

• India is the third largest producer and the second largest consumer of tobacco.

• Head and neck cancers, lung cancer, cervical cancer which are easily curable are common in the Indian Picture.

Prevention strategies - Reducing the burden of cancer

•Encourage understanding of risk factors-More than 30% of cancer could be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors.

• Early detection –A further one-third of the cancer burden could be decreased if cases were detected and treated early Nearly 80% of patients with advanced disease have a survival rate of 20%, while those who come in early stages of cancer have a healthy 80% survival rate. The aim is to detect the cancer before it has spread.

• GOAL: To spread awareness on cancer and to make cancer screening and prevention services available to the unreached.

• DESCRIPTION OF THE TARGET GROUP: It is estimated that 45-55% of Delhi’s population lives in Slums or unauthorized colonies, in squalid & unsanitary conditions.

• DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY:– Train the Trainer Workshops for personnel of Govt. of India

Gender Resource Centers.– Conduct Awareness Talks for selected population in

collaboration with GRCs.– Conduct of Screening Camps for 100 persons at each Camp
