Every year in Australia an estimated 23 mothers die during pregnancy or childbirth, 4,900 suffer a life- threatening morbidity, 19,000 suffer pre-eclampsia and 31,350 an obstetric haemorrhage. For infants, 22,000 are born preterm, 14,300 are growth restricted, more than 7,000 are admitted to neonatal intensive care and there are approximately 2,300 perinatal deaths. This is why Professor Jonathan Morris, Director at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, has dedicated his career to driving research that can be applied as soon as possible to mothers and babies. “Sadly there are so many women for whom pregnancy is not the joyous event so desired. Our vision at the Kolling is for a world with better healthcare,” says Professor Morris. Adverse infant outcomes are also associated with diabetes, reduced immunity and susceptibility to infection, asthma, cancer, cerebral palsy and neurological dysfunction. “I’m passionate about making a difference and creating ‘healthy pregnancy and birth’ for more women in the future. Medical research is the instrument by which this will happen,” explains Professor Morris. Professor Morris will be presenting highlights of research at the inaugural Kolling Knowledge (KK) Health Forum on 8th May 2012. Welcome to the Kolling Foundation’s new look newsletter. Since joining the Foundation in November last year I’m constantly amazed at the fantastic work conducted by our scientists. Now that our collaboration of more than 200 researchers is housed in the new innovative research building at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), we are sharing ideas, plans and vital resources.

Medical research is vital to improve healthcare in the community and our quality of life. Established in 1920 as a joint venture between the University of Sydney and

Thanks to Professor Robert BaxterThe Kolling Foundation is very grateful to Professor Robert Baxter for his contribution as Board Director during his tenure as Institute Director of the Kolling Institute. Professor Baxter resigned these positions in January 2012 to spend more time on Kolling cancer research. Professor Baxter is one of the most highly cited researchers from the University of Sydney and will be presenting at the Kolling Knowledge Cancer event on 15th May.

OAM for Kolling ResearcherKolling Cancer researcher Professor Stephen Clarke was recently awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to medicine in the disciplines of Oncology and Pharmacology. He is Professor of Oncology at Northern Clinical School, University of Sydney, Head of the Bill Walsh Laboratories at Kolling and sits on the Kolling Foundation Cancer Committee. Professor Clarke specialises in colon and lung cancer and his experience as both a researcher and clinician ensures that patients on Royal North Shore campus will benefit much earlier from the results of Kolling research.

RNSH, the Kolling Institute of Medical Research is the oldest medical research institute in NSW and houses the largest and most comprehensive tumour bank in the state. Our focus is to bring knowledge from the bench top to the bedside by translating laboratory discoveries into improved patient care.

Researchers at the Kolling Institute have been at the forefront of health and medical research discovery in areas such as pregnancy and childbirth, cancer and genetics, kidney and heart disease, bone and joint diseases, pain and neurological disorders and tissue regeneration.

The Kolling Foundation must raise much needed funds so our scientists can find new ways to treat, manage and prevent disease.

With your help we’ll continue to improve healthcare now and in the future. Thank you for your support.

Kolling Cancer Appeal Helping All Cancer Researchers

More than 12% of cancer patients in NSW are seen on campus at Royal North Shore and the Kolling is committed to doing more for these patients. By launching a $1.5 million Kolling Cancer Appeal we will build vital resources for all Kolling cancer researchers whose aim is to improve treatments.

With strong experience in endocrine cancers such as breast, ovarian and thyroid, the Kolling is celebrating 20 years since the start of the Tumour Bank, now the largest and most comprehensive bank of its kind in NSW.

Working with patients and surgeons at both the public and private hospitals, the Kolling houses more than 40,000 tumour samples stored in highly advanced cooling systems. Each sample can be used on up to five research programs and future samples can be used for more personalised medicine, ensuring new treatments are tested on the individual sample before the patient. The Kolling is committed to widen its tumour collection and include the top killing cancers such as lung and colon.

In addition to the Tumour Bank, the Kolling has key core genomics facilities which all researchers share and Prof. Robert Baxter has already had great success with grants from the University of Sydney and NHMRC for exciting new technology to measure proteins and improve diagnosis. However we require further funding for expert staff for both the Tumour Bank and the Proteomics Centre.

By supporting the Kolling Cancer Appeal you will help us discover more about individual cancers so we can apply this knowledge to individual patients and improve diagnosis and teatment.

If you would like to donate to the Kolling Cancer Appeal visit www.kolling.com.au or call 02 9926 4904.

KOLLING BONE & JOINTIn Memory of ProfessorPhilip Neil Sambrook OAM

When Philip lost his battle for life on March 31st 2012 he left a great legacy to the world - vital knowledge into causes and treatments for osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

“My passion is improved patient care for sufferers of bone and joint disease. We can only do that by constantly pushing the barriers to research.”Professor Philip Neil Sambrook OAM

He meant so much to so many people. He championed numerous students and researchers to take up the challenge of bone and joint research. Many of us owe him a great deal of gratitude for his guidance and mentorship and would not be where we are today without his commitment and support. Patients knew him as a kind, empathic, thoughtful doctor providing expert care. His family and friends knew him as a loyal and fun loving man with so much to give to all.

Philip came to the Royal North Shore Hospital in 1996 as Professor and Head of the Department of Rheumatology. He held the prestigious position of Florance and Cope Professor of Rheumatology at Royal North Shore Hospital until his death. He held the Chair of the Institute of Bone and Joint Research (IBJR) from its inception in 1998 until May 2011. He was instrumental in incorporating IBJR with the Kolling in 2005. He was awarded on OAM for his services to the broader community through significant contributions to osteoporosis and rheumatology research in 2008 and a Distinguished Service Medal for his contributions to the IBJR at the Kolling in October 2011.

The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac aims to raise much needed funds for charity. In 2011 the City2Surf introduced a special ‘gold charity entry’, perfect for those who like to make fundraising the focus of their event experience. Similar to other famous runs like the London Marathon, these entries are strictly limited.

Choose the Kolling Foundation as your charity and on the day you’ll get to line up in your own designated Gold Charity start group with unique gold bibs, behind the Sun-Herald (Red) elite group and in front of Green starters in Park Street.

He held continuous NHMRC grants for the past 15 years and had over 350 publications in peer-reviewed journals including many landmark papers and invited editorials in the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet. He appeared regularly as a spokesperson for osteoporosis treatment and research in television reports and served on editorial boards and national and international committees to raise awareness of the importance of osteoporosis and rheumatology research.

Remember him positively and as he advised, live a life of no regrets. For those of us left behind we should heed his advice and continue his cause to push those frontiers for bone and joint research.

Embrace the soccer season with some penalty practice and Kick for Kolling.

The Kolling Foundation is launching a fundraising initiative in partnership with soccer clubs around NSW. It’s a fun way to get your local soccer club involved in a great cause. Clubs are encouraged to pick a day in May or June to hold a penalty shoot out. Participants can be grouped into various categories, such as age or gender, with each participant shooting 10 penalties. Top shooters then go into dead heat penalty rounds.

The winners from each category will get a certificate and prize presented by Kick for Kolling ambassador and former Australian national league soccer player Andy ‘Harps’ Harper.

Each participant can create their own online fundraising page to collect donations and messages of encouragement from family and friends. This makes fundraising easy and fun.

All funds raised will go directly to support vital medical research at the Kolling.

If you’d like your soccer club to get involved please phone 02 9926 4904 or register at www.everydayhero.com.au/event/kickforkolling2012

Kick for Kolling Fundraiser

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in February, Cherrybrook Quilters Inc. successfully held a High Tea to raise money for the Kolling in recognition of fellow quilter and researcher Viive Howell. The food involved lots of delicious sweet and savoury recipes to be trialed, not an unpleasant task! The venue, a magnificent property in Dural, was the home of president Janice Pearson and the perfect setting for outdoor elegance.

The “goody bags” were made by Janice and her sister Margaret Goldman and filled with lots of little treats donated by members including quilted coffee mats that members made for the occasion and scrap fabric bundles that any quilter would be excited to receive. Ladies from “Cavalcade of Fashion” presented informative and entertaining stories on the History of Fashion.

Finally, the pièce de résistance was a beautiful quilt hand appliqued by Margaret Goldman, machine quilted by Sue Olma and bound by Fay Mullan which was raffled and won by Margaret-Anne Hayes, a well

known tireless fundraiser for cancer research. Viive was delighted to be presented with a cheque for $5000, proceeds from a wonderful occasion.

Many thanks to the committee: Janice Pearson, Margaret Goldman, Karen Matthews, Lorraine Grant, Val Richardson, Rosemary Walker and Sue Olma.
