Skin tags, also known as acrochorda, are small, brown or flesh-colored growths that typically appear on the neck, armpit, groin, eyelids or other areas where the skin forms creases. These benign tumors are typically no bigger than a grain of rice. They’re usually harmless and painless, more of an aesthetic nuisance than a real health concern, though they may become irritated due to shaving, clothing or skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Skin tags are thought to be caused by skin rubbing against skin, since they are so often found around skin that folds and creases frequently. Obesity and pregnancy may increase one’s chance of developing skin tags, and genetics is known to play a casual role in many cases. There also seems to be a correlation between skin tags and insulin resistance in diabetics. Some dermatologists, including Dr. Schlessinger, feel that they have an infectious component.

Skin tags are usually surgically removed. In his practice, Dr. Schlessinger prefers to numb the area and use a scalpel to cut the skin tag. Another common method for removing skin tags include cauterization, or burning, which is risky since it may damage healthy tissue surrounding the growth. Skin tags may also be removed through cryosurgery, or freezing with liquid nitrogen.
