A rash is a change in the skin that affects its texture or color. Rather than being a specific diagnosis, “rash” is the general term used for an outbreak of skin inflammation and/or discoloration that could be caused by any number of factors.

The causes of rashes may vary widely. Common causes of rashes are allergies to foods, dyes, medicines, plants and insects. Friction, abrasion from clothing or other material and skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis are also known to causes rashes. You’ll need to check with your physician to determine the cause of any rash before treating it.

Psoriasis is a common, chronic skin disorder that causes skin cells to grow too fast. This results in patches of red, itchy skin called plaques.

Eczema is inflammation of the skin that’s caused by genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms include a dry, bumpy rash and itchy red skin. Areas typically affected include the arms, knees, wrists, hands and face.

Athlete’s foot and jock itch are contagious fungal skin infections passed through contact with infected individuals. The symptoms include peeling, cracking, scaly skin, itching, burning, redness, blisters, and unusual odor.

Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition that causes rough patches of small, pimple-like bumps. It usually occurs on the arms, legs, thighs and cheeks. The bumps are painless, but difficult to treat. Keratosis pilaris is often genetic and usually disappears by age 30.

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella virus. Most people will get chickenpox at least once in their lives if they have not been vaccinated. Once you have chickenpox the first time, you aren’t likely to get it again unless the virus returns in the form of shingles. Symptoms include an itchy red rash and red spots or blisters.

Shingles, also called herpes voster, is a skin rash caused by the varicella. Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts back up again and affects the immune system. It usually causes a painful, itching band of blisters on one side of the body.

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. It’s usually caused by bacteria or fungus, and can be characterized by pimple-like sores with a hair in the center of each. You can develop folliculitis from using a pool or hot tub that hasn’t been treated properly with chlorine, wearing tight clothing or using pore-clogging products over a period of time.

Herpes simplex is a viral disease, usually present in the form of cold cores or blisters on the face and mouth, though they may be present elsewhere on the body. There is currently no cure for herpes. The symptoms include tingling, raw and red lesions.
