The bacteria produce a very powerful toxin known as tetanospasmin which impairs the body’s motor neurons (the nerves controlling the muscles). According to the research, tetanus is a serious disease and 1 in 10 people will die because of the same, majorly the young children, newborns and elder people who are, generally, not immunized.

In this disease, the muscle spasms in the face and further, neck will lead to the inability for the mouth to open. This is one of the most common symptoms of tetanus and that’s why the disease is called lockjaw.
The ‘Tetanus Vaccine’ (also known as tetanus toxoid (Td) prevent tetanus disease (the lockjaw disease) which is a serious disease as it cause pain and tightening of the muscles of the body, and the person can’t open his mouth. It is a threat to those who are not taking vaccinations on time. And, there’s no cure for tetanus and the medication in complicated cases is given to low down the effect of tetanus toxin.

Which vaccine prevent this disease? Is the disease curable?
Tetanus vaccine, also known as tetanus toxoid (Td) prevents tetanus. 5 doses are recommended during childhood, then additional doses in every ten years. In most of the cases, a person is immune after 3 doses. In case of an injury, a tetanus booster should be given within 48 hours from the injury time. In very high risk injuries, tetanus antitoxin may be recommended if the person is not immunized.
