FEATURED SPEAKERS

Susannah Fox is the Chief Technology O cer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She is responsible for helping HHS leadership harness the power of data, technology, and innovation to improve the health and welfare of the nation. Together with the IDEA Lab team, she creates opportunities for entrepreneurship across the HHS workforce.

SusannahSusannah most recently served as the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, helping to catalyze new ways to think about challenges and develop solutions that deliver impact. She has also advised organizations like the Collaborative Chronic Care Network as they work to improve care delivery by including people living with IBD, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis on their innovation teams.

FromFrom 2000-14, Susannah was an Associate Director of the Internet Project at the Pew Research Center where she helped quantify and explain the social impact of the internet. She pioneered participatory research methods at the Center in order to explore how information technology and social media aect the health care industry and the consumer health care experience, with a special focus on people living with chronic and rare conditions.

Susannah has a B.A. in Anthropology from Wesleyan University.

Amy Tenderich is a journalist, blogger, patient advocate, and consultant who started DiabetesMine.com after her diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2003. Her site has become a leading online destination for people with diabetes and one of the top award-winning health blogs around the country and the world. The site became part of San Francisco-based Healthline.com in January 2015.

AmyAmy is the co-author, along with Dr. Richard Jackson of the Joslin Diabetes Center, of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes – a unique motivational guide to the 5 key medical tests that everyone with diabetes should have and monitor regularly.

She has made it her personal mission to spur innovation in diabetes care that actually originates with patients. She penned an Open Letter to Steve Jobs in 2007 that went viral, developing into an international crowdsourcing competition called the DiabetesMine Design Challenge. The ccompetition was underwritten by the California HealthCare Foundation, and supported by IDEO, a leading design firm with close ties to Stanford University. The competition culminated in theDiabetesMine Innovation Summit, a unique gathering of diabetes stakeholders that Amy organizes and hosts annually at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Howard is President, CEO, and Founder of Tidepool. Howard was on the founder’s team at TiVo, where as VP of Software and User Experience he led the eorts that made TiVo as easy to use as it was disruptive. He was also VP of Software at Pixar, where he led the team developing Pixar’s proprietary film-making system, and at Amazon where he ran a secret software project to develop devices that leverage cloud services. At Linden Lab he led the team that delivered the open-sourced Second Life Viewer 2.0 project. Howard has a BS in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. His teenage daughter has T1D.

Stayce Beck, Ph.D., M.P.H. is the Branch Chief for the Diabetes Diagnostic Devices Branch at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) where she leads a team that reviews new diabetes devices prior to sale in the U.S. Previously, Stayce was the team lead for the Artificial Pancreas project. Prior to joining the Center for Devices and Radiological Health in 2010, Stayce was a scientific reviewer and researcher in the Division of Monoclonal Antibodies in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Safety (CDER).

Dr. Joseph Cafazzo is Lead for the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, a state-of-the-art research facility devoted to the evaluation and design of healthcare technology, hosting 70 researchers and sta. Dr. Cafazzo has advised and conducted research for public sector policy makers and private sector medical technology companies on the design and safety of technology in healthcare. He is Senior Director of UHN Healthcare Human Factors, as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, University of TToronto, where he teaches and conducts research in the areas of human factors, clinical engineering, and health informatics. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Career Scientist award by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Dr. Ciechanowski is founder and Chief Medical O cer of Samepage, Inc., a software and services company that helps healthcare organizations achieve the goal of improved health, aordability and patient experience by optimizing behaviors of patients and healthcare providers through evidence-based behavioral and collaborative care models. As an a liate Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington, he has worked with Dr. Irl Hirsch as head of behavioral health at the UW Diabetes Care Center for the past 17 years. Dr. Ciechanowski also serves as president of the Community Leadership Board American Diabetes Association in Washington State.

Charles O’Connell founded FITSCRIPT.COM, to help those with diabetes reach their fitness goals, as well as the FITSCRIPT diabetes fitness clinic, the world’s first exercise clinic dedicated exclusively to diabetes prevention and management. Through FITSCRIPT, he launched the first online video instruction platform providing exercise video instruction integrated with information for tracking and improving diabetes metrics. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (’02) Charlie was a multi-sport, division one athlete living with T1D (Football and Track and Field), winning two Ivy League championships during his playing days. Charlie is a certified personal trtrainer, a CDC certified diabetes prevention lifestyle coach, speaker, author, golfer, skier, runner and entrepreneur.

MacDermott is the Founder and President of Reimagine.me, an online community that helps people overcome the emotional impact of cancer. Reimagine’s Core Program has proven in two clinical studies to improve quality-of-life across every major psychosocial benchmark, including depression, anxiety, distress, PTSD, self-e cacy, and even fatigue. The research, which was done in collaboration with the Duke Cancer Institute, the Livestrong Foundation, and the National Cancer Institute, has been published in peer-reviewed journals. ReimagineReimagine recently completed a successful pilot project with Naval Special Warfare, oering its curriculum to help Navy SEALS and their families cope with the transitions in and out of deployment and combat. MacDermott, who created and wrote the curriculum, is a licensed professional counselor with a specialty in marriage and family therapy.

Eileen Hughes is the program manager in the department of community benefits at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, working with the community health centers a liated with BIDMC. Hughes, who has type 1 diabetes, was a volunteer in the Diabetes and Complications and Control Trial (DCCT). She ccontinues as a participant in the follow-up study, Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC). Prior to BIDMC, Hughes worked in educational marketing for Walden Media and educational outreach for public television station WGBH in Boston, where she worked on several children’s shows including ARTHUR’S Hooray for Health, a series of curriculum units that focus on pediatric health issues.

Anna McCollister-Slipp is Chief Advocate for Participatory Research for the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) and co-founder of Galileo Analytics, a visual data exploration and advanced data analytics ccompany focused on democratizing access to and understanding of complex health data. At Scripps, Anna works with researchers to develop new ways of involving patients, caregivers and physicians in the design of clinical research using digital and genomic health tools. Anna’s passion for innovation in health data analytics, participatory research and digital health tools is rooted in her personal experiences living with type 1 diabetes. In her professional and personal activities, Anna seeks to build platforms for better understanding of and engagement with the needs of patients.

Jessica Floeh is an experience designer with experience in healthcare corporations, bringing patient perspectives and initiatives to business objectives. Jessica is Lead Healthcare Experience Designer at Intel and is in the process of transitioning to work in the field and experience labs at Business Innovation Factory, a non-profit organization that designs and tests transformative business models in complex social systems. Jessica'sJessica's focus and mission to improve healthcare through design stems from decades of experience living with Type 1 Diabetes. She was first exposed to the human-centered approach at Parsons The New School For Design where she conceptualized Hanky Pancreas, an accessory line to improve the anti-social design and wearability of insulin pumps. She received innovation awards, grants, and opportunities to share her work from The Mayo Clinic, Core77, CNN, and Public Radio International.

Dr. Polonsky is President and Founder of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the world's first organization wholly dedicated to studying and addressing the unmet psychological needs of people with diabetes. He is also AssociateAssociate Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Polonsky received his PhD in clinical psychology from Yale University and has served as Senior Psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, faculty member at Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Most recently, he received the American Diabetes Association’s 2014 Richard R. Rubin Award for distinguished contributions to behavioral medicine. A licensed clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator, Dr. Polonsky has also authored several books for the lay audience and co-edited several others for healthcare professionals.

A type 2 PWD living in Northern Virginia with a "devoted interest in using science and innovation to improve the lives of those with diabetes." Brian blogs at The Trials of Type 2 Diabetes and is active as an administrator at the TuDiabetes community site. LiLife Hack: Avoiding insulin mistakes with a rubber band memory device.

An Ohio-based mom whose 9-year-old son was ironically diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on Halloween day of this past year. With a degree in nursing (RN), 15 years' experience in the healthcare industry and an MBA degree in marketing, she immediately set out to become an innovator in diabetes tools herself. LiLife Hack: Working with a team to develop a caregiver support app called Type1D - team for life.

Julie Crawford

A certified diabetes educator and longtime type 1 patient herself, who says she's feeling the eects of middle age and wants "to represent the needs of people experiencing menopause, memory loss, hearing loss, hair loss, tooth decay, mild cognitive impairment, loss of muscle strength, and all the crazy/scary things that come with aging." LiLife Hack: A basket placed on the bathroom countertop to help remind her whether she's taken her Lantus or not each day.

Jane Dickinson

A retired professional dancer, now raising 3 young children, who's been living with type 1 diabetes for 25 years. She applies the Jagger Principle to diabetes: “You can't always get what you want, but if you try, sometimes... well, you just might find, you get what you need!” LiLife Hacks: Tricks including "littering your home with glucometers" and using Breathe Right Strips to help secure a CGM sensor.

Amy Green

A type 1 PWD for close to 35 years who's currently studying for his PhD in Berlin, Germany. He's researching the role of mobile technology in diabetes management and how to improve the user experience (UX) of diabetes self-management apps. LiLife Hack: Developing new digital tech for diabetes management, which he says "makes my control more fun."

Dmitri Katz

A longtime type 1 (almost 38 years!) and well-known D-blogger and advocate, whose conviction is "that diabetes innovations in all forms and patient/doctor communication partnerships are key tools for people with diabetes to live, grow and flourish." LiLife Hacks: MacGyvering a One Touch Ultra strips canister lid to help remove a pump battery, and using long-stemmed 3- 4 ounce glasses for a "fancy" hypo treatment that won't overdo it.

Kelly Kunik

Diagnosed at just 23 months, this young woman has experienced diabetes as a toddler, a child, a teen, and now transitioning into adulthood. Yep, she even performed “The No-Hurty Dance” with her kindergarten classmates when an injection did not hurt. Life Hack: Creating Pumpstash, a comfortable, didiscreet option to hold an insulin pump and Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM).

Corrine Logan

A Southern California based D-blogger, author and passionate advocate who's a devotee of Nightscout/CGM in the Cloud; she did some recent product reviews for us here at the 'Mine. LiLife Hacks: Setting up Nightscout, exchanging unused D-products within the support group, and making her own medical ID bracelets for herself and anyone who asks.

Joanne Milo

A type 1 herself, parent of a type 1 child, professional nutritionist and “diabetes optimal wellness expert.” She’s also an Eli Lilly 50-year silver medalist, and a cyclist who's “always on the hunt for products and services that improve my experience as a diabetic athlete.” LiLife Hacks: Mounting a Dexcom CGM receiver onto her bike for better data-viewing while riding.
