Veterans and military families face unique challenges every day. The good news is, there are countless resources for assistance. With so many organizations and resources, though, it can often be difficult for families to find the right fit. In order to better serve our students and communities, CMU's Global Campus has simplified the search. By researching several websites such as Charity Navigator, Charity Watch and Give Well, we've come up with a list of seven great organizations with differentiated services serving veterans and military families.

Fisher House Foundation

Summary of services: Provides military families housing close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury; also funds a scholarship program for military families, and provides military personnel and their families with free air travel and hotel rooms.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide support to the families of those who have been wounded, injured or killed during combat operations. The families of our casualties suffer in many ways: some financially, some psychologically.

Homes for Our Troops

Mission: Homes for Our Troops' (HFOT) mission is to build mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured Veterans Post-9/11, to enable them to rebuild their lives.

Summary of Services: The National Military Family Association is the leading nonprofit dedicated to serving the families who stand behind the uniform. Since 1969, NMFA has worked to strengthen and protect millions of families through its advocacy and programs. They provide spouse scholarships, camps for military kids, and retreats for families reconnecting after deployment and for the families of the wounded, ill, or injured. NMFA serves the families of the currently serving, retired, wounded or fallen servicemen and women.

Mission Statement: Hire Heroes USA empowers US military members, veterans and spouses to succeed in the civilian workforce.

Mission Statement: Operation Homefront builds strong, stable and secure military families so they can thrive in the communities they work so hard to protect. The organization has many programs in the areas of housing, family and caregiver support and financial aid.

K9s for Warriors

Mission Statement: K9s For Warriors is dedicated to providing service canines to our warriors suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disability, traumatic brain injury and/or military sexual trauma as a result of military service post 9/11. Our goal is to empower them to return to civilian life with dignity and independence. K9s For Warriors is a tax-exempt 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization.
