13th Three Year Plan Elevation from Least Developed Country to Developing Country by

2022 Special focus on Hydropower & renewable energy

Appropriate policies and strategies Collaboration & coordination with stakeholders and development partners

Drivers: Poverty alleviation, economic development & climate change mitigation and adaptation

Long term goal: Develop hydropower for all-round national development, be self sufficient

by 2027, and develop hydropower as an export commodity Universal access to modern energy services (electricity and clean cooking

solutions) Achieve 10% renewable energy in energy mix and provide 30% population

energy access through off-grid renewable energy in next 20 years

Page 13: Nepal Country Presentation at ACEF 2014

13th Three Year Plan (…contd) Strategies:

Create environment for public, private, community and cooperative investments in hydropower

Expand and improve electricity transmission and distribution system Attract foreign investment for large and multipurpose hydropower projects

for meeting domestic electricity needs and then export Support research, technology transfer and domestic manufacturing in off-

grid renewable energy systems Mobilize internal and external funds for renewable energy development Promote and improve demand side management and energy efficiency

Priorities: Rapid hydropower development: small, medium, large and storage projects Expansion and upgrading of transmission and distribution network Electricity trading Formulation and implementation of SE4ALL National Action Plan Renewable energy development for enhancing rural livelihoods

Page 14: Nepal Country Presentation at ACEF 2014

Energy+ and Nepal International partnership initiated by Norway to support energy

access & reduce greenhouse gas emissions Nepal welcomes initiative and considers it an important vehicle to

achieve SE4ALL goals Process ongoing to establish a Framework for Energy+

Cooperation between Nepal and Energy+ partners Energy+ partners: Norway, Denmark, ADB and UNDP Salient features of the proposed Cooperation:

Focus on supporting implementation of SE4ALL initiative in Nepal based on Energy+ principles

Scope of cooperation encompasses energy access, large renewables (mainly hydropower) development and energy efficiency

Recognizes SE4ALL Coordination Mechanism as mechanism for coordination of Energy+ cooperation

SE4ALL National Action Plan also Energy+ Action Plan
