ACEF FUNDED PROJECTSWhats new in SRA-LGAREC? Upgrading of

the whole station! Funded by the AgriculturalCompetitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) forSugar, the Stations upgrading is to increaseproductivity in sugarcane production therebyincreasing farmers income and to ensure theglobal competitiveness of the Philippine sugar

    industry.

The project, from a proposal prepared bySRA-LGAREC and came to reality through theable leadership of Adm. James C. Ledesma, willgenerate more ecologically sound andenvironmentally-friendly technologies such asimprovement of cultural farm managementpractices, utilization of indigenous materials asfertilizer sources, use of biological agents for thecontrol of sugarcane pests, and the developmentof HYVs resistant to pests and diseases andlessen dependence on pesticides. The newtechnologies in sugarcane growing will improvecane quality and increase farm yield and income.

The project, started on September 2003,includes:

    1. Rehabilitation of road networks the erodedasphalt road network within the station is nowconverted in 4-6 inch thick concrete road. Theroad network rehabilitation also included the de-clogging of the old drainage system.

    2. Rehabilitation of Buildings, Greenhouses andSheds dilapidated and termite-infestedbuildings are being rehabilitated. As of this time, the Agro meteorological station is completed, theAgronomy building and the Soils Laboratory arealmost done while bidding is on going for the

other buildings. Screen houses and Pollinationsheds will soon follow to hasten the breedingprogram.

    3. Acquisition of modern laboratory equipments modern laboratory equipments were acquired toaid the ever-changing demands of research in thestation. Biotechnology techniques are now beingutilized while an adequate Biotech Lab is beinginstalled. Computerized testing of samples beingdone in the laboratories together with computer-aided analyses makes research in the stationmore accurate and competitive.

    4. Rehabilitation of Water Systems the roadnetwork going to the water source in Tulo-tulospring is being rehabilitated while the irrigationsystem in the experimental fields is about 50%done. Layout of underground pipes is underwaywhile the booster pump is already on standby forimmediate testing. Soon, adequate domestic andirrigation water supply will support the needs ofthe Station.

laboratories and the training center. Uninterruptedelectrical supply is much needed in maintainingresearch and development activ ities.

    6. Establishment of Local Area Network (LAN) while new computer desktops and laptops wereacquired to aid the information management ofthe various working units, a Local Area Network(LAN) was also established. Utilizing the wiredand wireless technology, working units is nowable to communicate and share informationonline. While the www.sra-lgarec.net website isbeing maintained, soon SRA-LGAREC will be

connected with the LAN of SRA-Bacolod and ofPanay that will also be established under theACEF fund.

    7. Establishment of modernized training facility ACEF-funded OPSI seminars for the AgrarianReform Communities are being conducted by theTraining Unit of Extension Services Departmentall over Negros and Panay. Soon, the Clubhousewill be converted into modern Convention Centernot only for training and symposia but also forother important functions and gatherings.Presently, state-of-the-art audio-visual andconference equipments have arrived whilebidding for the conversion of the Clubhouse isunderway. The training center will also include adormitory and cafeteria. Added to this are therenovation of the tennis courts and the retiling ofthe swimming pool. Overall, the Clubhouse areawill soon be a fully functional convention andrecreation haven.

    8. Acquisition of Vehicles and Farm Implements new vehicles like vans and motorcycles to aidin the transportation needs of the station wereacquired while tractors complete with farmimplement were provided in the project. Togetherwith the improved irrigation systems these farmimplements will pave the way for a more vigorousproduction and field maintenance.

These valuable items and much neededimprovements are but dreams of yesterday, and a lotmore is still to come! Finally, the challenge ofconverting the objectives of this project into reality isin the hands of the able men and women of SRA-LGAREC. (glrosales)
