8. v DISCLAIMER The information given in this report is police
recorded data which has been obtained through State/UT Police. All
precautions have been taken to ensure that the data is
statistically consistent. NCRB has only compiled and collated the
data and presented it in the form of this report. NCRB shall not be
responsible for authenticity of this information. However, any
discrepancy observed in this report may be brought to the notice of
the Bureau. In this report, the calculated values of accidental
rate and percentage share are rounded up to only one decimal; hence
an approximate value is used for analysis. Data pertains to the
calendar year 2014. The causative factors of accidents and suicides
are not being captured by the Bureau. The classification of
accidents and suicides has been done for statistical purpose only.
The NCRB collects and collates data (numerical) from SCRBx/CID of

made available on our website. The cause Sudden deaths also
includes injuries cases. LIMITATION Projected mid-year population
for the year 2014, provided by Office of RGI/Population
Commissioner, MHA has been used for calculation of suicides rate
for States/UTs. However, rough estimation based on percentage share
of population ratio has been used for the newly created States
namely Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Population figures of The
Population Census 2011 have been used for calculation of suicides
rate in 53 Mega Cities for the year 2014 due to non- availability
of projected mid-year population for the year 2014 in respect of
these 53 Mega Cities.

& Kashmir, accounting for 20.0% and 10.3% respectively of total
suicides during 2014. These three States together accounted for
76.0% of total suicides in CAPFs in the country.
15. 1 CHAPTER 1 ACCIDENTS IN INDIA Introduction The proformae
for data collection of Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India
report were comprehensively revised in consultation with Ministry
of Home Affairs, States/UTs Police and others stakeholders. The
revised proformae have been implemented for data collection for the
year 2014. Accidental deaths could be due to forces/factors of the
nature which termed as Natural Accidental Deaths or could be due to
deliberate or negligent conduct of human beings, which is termed as
Un-natural Accidental Deaths or due to causes not covered in the
above two categories and with no initial apparent cause of deaths
which is categorised as Other Causes of Deaths like poisoning,
sudden deaths due to heart attacks etc. For the States/UTs, an
adjusted mid-year projected population for the year 2014 is used
for calculation of rate of accidental deaths whereas for the
Cities, the population of the Population Census 2011 is used.
Incidence and Rate of Accidental Deaths during the Decade
(2004-2014) The incidence of accidental deaths has shown an
increasing trend during the period 2004 - 2014 with an increase of
62.9% in the year 2014 as compared to 2004. The population growth
during the period 2004-2014 was 14.6% whereas the increase in the
rate of accidental deaths during the same period was 42.4%. The
percentage change of accidental deaths is presented in Table-1.1. A
total of 4,51,757 accidental deaths were reported in the country
during 2014 showing an increase of 12.8% as compared to 2013.
Correspondingly, 11.3% rise in the rate of Accidental Deaths were
reported during the year as compared to 2013. [Table-1(A)] Table 1

Gujarat (38.6%) while Uttarakhand has reported higher percentage
decline of 48.3%, followed by Meghalaya (28.1%) [Table- 1.3].
Gender wise analysis reveals that 21.5% and 78.5% of total victims
were female and male respectively. 1/9th victims of accidental
deaths were children (below 18 years of age). Age group of most of
the victims was between 18 to 45 years. This group of people has
accounted for 58.6% of all persons killed in accidents in the
country during the year 2014. A total of 41,744 senior citizens (60
years & above of age) have also got killed in various accidents
during 2014 [Table-1.4].

21. 7 Causes of Accidental Deaths Various causes have been
identified for analyzing the patterns of accidental deaths in the
country. For statistical purpose, these causes have been put
separately under Accidents due to Forces of Nature (Natural
Accidents), Un-natural Accidents and Deaths due to Other Causes.
Under Causes Attributable to Forces of Nature, the share of deaths
due to Avalanche, Exposure to Cold, Landslide, Torrential Rain and
Heat/Sun Stroke has increased during the year over the previous
year 2013 whereas the share of causes such as Earthquake,
Starvation due to Natural Calamity, Flood, Epidemic and Lighting
has decreased in 2014 over 2013. The share of causes not
attributable to forces of nature has increased such as Traffic
Accidents, Accidental Explosion, Falls, Factory/Machine Accidents,
Deaths due to Consumption of Illicit/Spurious Liquor, Deaths of
Women during Pregnancy and Stampede whereas the share of causes
such as Drowning, Collapse of Structure, Air Crash, Accidental
Fire, Electrocution, Sudden Deaths, Suffocation, Poisoning and Fire
Arms in accidental deaths has decreased in 2014 as compared to the
previous year (2013). Cause wise details of accidental deaths, rate
and its percentage variation during 2014 over 2013 are presented in

24. 10 Natural Causes Accidental Deaths Cause wise accidental
deaths due to forces of nature are presented in Table- 1.5. Out of
20,201 accidental deaths due to causes attributable to forces of
nature,12.8% deaths were due to Lightning, 6.2% deaths due to
Heat/Sun Stroke and 4.5% deaths due to Exposure to Cold during the
year 2014. Flood and Landslide caused 2.7% and 2.5% respectively of
total deaths attributable to forces of nature during 2014. The age
group-wise distribution of accidental deaths by causes attributable
to forces of nature is given in Table-1.5. As per age-wise
classification of victims, 5.2% of such victims were below 14 years
of age, 22.4% in the age- group of 18 years to below 30 years,
29.6% in the age-group of 30 years to below 45 years and 23.4%
victims were in age group 45 years to below 60 years during 2014.
Senior citizens (60 yrs. and above) constituted 13.0% of the total
such victims. State/UT wise and gender wise distribution of
accidental deaths in the country by forces of nature along with
their share in total deaths is presented Table-1.8. 50.0%, 26.7%,
26.0% and 25.0% of deaths in Nagaland, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and
Sikkim respectively were due to Landslide. All accidental deaths in
Tamil Nadu were due to Lightning. 129 out of 541 deaths due to
Flood were reported in Jammu & Kashmir alone. Similarly, 41 out
of 62 deaths due to Cyclone were reported in Andhra Pradesh alone.
Heat/Sun Stroke caused 60.0% and 40.4% of total accidental deaths
attributable to natural causes in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh
respectively. 52.3% of deaths in Punjab were due to Exposure to
Cold during 2014. Un-natural Causes It is generally accepted that
accidents due to Un-natural Causes are preventible type and can be
reduced by effective safety measures safety consciousness,
effective human interventions, etc. The accidents occurred due to
deliberate or negligent actions of human have been considered as
un-natural accidents. A total of 6,36,509 cases of Un-natural
Accidents were reported in the country which resulted in 3,16,828
deaths and 4,94,096 persons injured during 2014. (Table-1.6) The
cause-wise analysis of un-natural deaths revealed that majority of
deaths were due to traffic accidents which accounted for 53.4% of
total un-natural deaths during the year 2014. 9.4%, 6.2%, 4.9% and
3.0% deaths were due to Drowning, 'Accidental Fire, 'Falls' and
'Electrocution' respectively. [Table-1.6] The age-group-wise
distribution of accidental deaths in the country by various
Un-natural causes along with their share in total deaths is
presented in Table-1.7. 31.2% and 30.0% of deaths were in age
groups 30- below 45 years and 18 - below 30 years respectively.
State/UT wise and gender wise distribution of accidental deaths in
the country by various Un- natural causes is presented in
Table-1.9. Maharashtra accounting for 9.5% (one- eleventh) of
countrys population has reported 11.5% of accidental deaths due to
unnatural causes. Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka accounted for 9.8%, 8.9%, 8.1%,
7.1% 7.2% and 7.0% deaths respectively during the year 2014. Other
Causes of Accidents Under this category of classification of
accidents, the Bureau has included accidental deaths which occurred
due to factors other than deliberate or negligent act of human
beings. In earlier publication, these accidental deaths were part
of Un-natural Accidental Deaths. Now the Bureau has made an effort
to study these accidents separately. A total of 1,26,095 cases of
Other Causes of Accidents were reported in the country which caused
1,14,728 deaths and injuries to 14,629 persons during 2014.

during 2014. State/UT wise and Cause wise detailed on Other Cause
of Accidents is presented in Table 1.11. 7,678 out 18,567 cases of
heart attacks were reported in Maharashtra alone, accounting for
41.4% of total cases under Heart Attacks in the country during
2014. 42.7% (1,157 out of 2712) of food poisoning cases were
reported in Maharashtra alone. Fire Accidents Considering the
sensitivity of fire accidents, the Bureau has also collected data
on fire accidents according to places of occurrence. A total of
20,377 cases of fire accidents were reported in the country during
2014, which caused 1,889 persons injured and 19,513 deaths. The
cause-wise analysis of fire accidents revealed that 18.3% of 20,377
fire accidents were reported in residential/dwelling buildings
[Table 1.12]. Maximum cases of fire accidents were reported in
Maharashtra (4,805 out of 20,377), accounting for 23.6% of total
such cases. Majority of States/UT have furnished data under Other
Category [Table-1.13]. The State/UT-wise analysis of Place of fire
accidents revealed that in some States/UTs, 50.0% or more cases of
fire accidents were reported in residential building or dwelling
houses during 2014. These States/UTs were A & N Island (100%),
Puducherry (81.8%), Meghalaya (69.2%), Punjab (58.7%), Jammu &
Kashmir (56.3%), Kerala (52.9%) and Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram,
Chandigarh & D & N Haveli (50.0% each). 31.0% cases of fire
accidents in Goa (18 out of 58 cases) were reported in commercial
building. A total of 12 cases of fire accidents were also reported
in school building which caused injuries to 4 persons and 8 deaths.
A total of 13 cases accidental fire in trains were reported during
2014 which caused injuries to 7 persons and 21 deaths[Table-1.13].
