Artificial Light Is Rubbish

My topic is abstract photography. I think abstract is the most explorative of all the shot types, because there is often deeper subtext or connotations to abstract. My locations include areas in my house such as the driveway and the back garden, a field in the village where I live and at school because one of the pictures involves a Drost effect of taking a picture of a camera that is taking a picture of a camera.

My inspiration comes from photographers who can take pictures at specific moments that capture subtext by accident, such as the picture of a man at Woodstock wearing trousers fashioned out of an American flag. The inspiration for the idea of only using the flash as lighting comes from the cover of Rid of Me by PJ Harvey, in which the only visible light was the camera flash so that it captured the single moment of light in the scene. It brings out numerous details in the picture that wouldn’t have been captured in normal lighting.

The total budget, considering cameras (Canon 1100D, costing £319 on Amazon), SD cards (8G class 10 SD cards coming to £4.93 on the same website) and tripods (Velbon DF61 costing £29.99 on Amazon), should come to £353.92.

In the exhibition, I would wish to exhibit the images so that they are printed on canvas and mounted around 10 centimetres away from the wall so that it stands out and can create shadows on the wall behind it, adding to the themes of artificial light in the pictures.
