Mechanical

INTRODUCTION

• Generally we see the two wheel vehicle drives withthe help of chain or belt. But now a days the twowheel vehicle also drives with the help of shaft.

• A propeller shaft are used in place of chain and belt that's can increase the mechanical efficiency of the vehicle.

• In this vehicle the transmission of the power from the engine is transmitted by the propeller shaft.

WHAT IS PROPELLER SHAFT

A propeller shaft is a mechanical componentfor transmitting torque and rotation.

It allow for variations in the alignment anddistance between the driving and drivencomponents.

They must therefore be strong enough to bearthe stress.

propeller shafts frequently incorporate one ormore universal joints.

PROPELLER SHAFT

PROPELLER SHAFT WITH TWO

WHEELER

• At first BMW has produced shaft drive motorcyclessince 1923.

• A disadvantage of shaft drive on a motorcycle isthat helical gearing, spiral bevel gearing or similar isneeded to turn the power 90° from the shaft to the rearwheel

• Motorcycle engines positioned such that the crankshaft islongitudinal and parallel to the frame are often used forshaft-driven motorcycles. This requires only one 90° turnin power transmission, rather than two.

SHAFT DRIVE MOTORCYCLE

ADVANTAGE

1. It will increase the mechanical efficiency ofthe vehicle.

2. By using propeller shaft noise will alsoreduced.

3. Acceleration of the vehicle increase. It canattain a maximum speed within a second.

DISADVANTAGE

1. Weight of the vehicle may increase.

2. Maintenance of the vehicle will increase.

3. Cost effectiveness.

4. A disadvantage of shaft drive on a motorcycleis that helical gearing, spiral bevel gearing orsimilar is needed to turn the power 90° fromthe shaft to the rear wheel,

Application

• Heavy vehicles (cars, buses, trucks)

• Motorcycles

• Honda ST series

• Company use (Honda , suzuki, kawaski, yammaha)

Conclusion

• The potential for carbon fibre composites in automotive propeller shafts as a means of achieving substantial weight reduction has long been recognized, and has been demonstrated in small volume applications since 1988.

• The main barrier to large scale penetration of the market has been product cost, but industrial developments in recent years offer the prospect of substantial reductions.
