A Brief Introduction To The Mathematics Curriculum

• We follow the National Curriculum for England

• The Curriculum sets out the Knowledge, Skills and Understanding

that students need.

• This is laid out in the Primary framework for Literacy and

Mathematics (2006)

Learning Objectives

• The Learning Objectives, around which teachers plan, according to

student needs, are arranged in to 7 strands.

• Using and applying Mathematics

• Counting and Understanding Number

• Knowledge and using Number Facts

• Calculating

• Understanding Shape

• Measures

• Handling Data

Effective Learning

For Learning to be Effective, Teaching and Learning Must:

• Build on prior learning and experiences

• Relate to real life

• Provide appropriate challenge

• Engage students in the learning

• Be reviewed and revisited periodically

• Be used and applied in a variety of situations

• Allow opportunities for discussion and experimentation

• Encourage students to rethink and restructure ideas

Is this what you remember from your

Maths lessons?

Key stage 1 – Years 1 & 2

Key Points

• A solid foundation is important on which to build

• Expectations and activities must be developmentally appropriate

• Students need to be successful and enjoy Maths – they also need

challenge

• Students should see value in their work

• Not all students will progress at the same rate – progress will not be

constant

• Not all students are ready for written calculation methods

Page 8: Yew Chung International School of Beijing - Mathematics in Primary School

Standard Written Calculation Methods

• Students will develop their written calculations as they

develop through Primary school. Let’s not be in too much of a

hurry.

• First they need to be able to understand basic mathematical

ideas and concepts

• Look at the Core Mathematical objectives for Years 1 and 2

in Strand 4- Calculating. Where do you see the first reference

to written methods?

Standard written methods should only be introduced when a

child has a secure knowledge and understanding of the process

involved and can clearly explain the strategies they have used.

Pre Calculation Essential Skills and Understandings.

• Say and use number names

• (know that a number name identifies the number of objects)

• Counting – 1 to 1

• Recognise and write numerals

• Count on and back

• Estimating a small group of objects

• Use more than and less than

• Find I more and I less

• Compare and order numbers

• Grouping

• Sorting

Skills at this Stage
