Lose the ‘l’ and gain a word
The words ‘all’, ‘well’, and ‘full’ always lose one ‘l’ when they’re added to another word.
For example:
• all + most …………………..almost
• cheer + full………………….cheerful
• well + fare ………………… welfare

Put ‘i’ before ‘e’, except after ‘c’ when the sound it ‘ee’.
For example:
• In the word relief the sound is ee, so it’s spelt ie.
• In the word ceiling the sound is ee, but there’s a c- so it’s spelt ei.

The ‘ei’ rulesThe general rule is ‘i’ before ‘e’ , unless they come after a ‘c’ – if they do, it’s ‘e’ before ‘i’.
For example:Field, friend
However, words that have an ‘i’ and an ‘e’ that sound like ‘ay’ have the ‘e’ before the ‘i’.
For example:eight, neigh
Words that have an ‘i’ and an ‘e’ but sound like ‘i’ also have the ‘e’ first.

1. If a word contains ‘CIEN’ then the ‘i’ is put before the ‘e’, even though it has a ‘c’ before it.’

2. These are words that have the ‘e’ before the ‘i’, even though there’s no ‘c’ before them!
