INSPIRATIONAL IDEASEach one of these products has been

REUSED and turned into something new…Can you guess what they where before?

Page 8: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

The DBIS Music Department Needs YOU! They want you to turn something OLD into a STOMP style

percussion instrument! You will be PERFORMING at the DBIS Food Fair on Saturday 23rd November, so

make sure it is durable enough to last!

Activity 2 – REUSE

Page 9: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

REUSING OLD PRODUCTSThink of what OLD product you could use and what NEW STOMP instrument you could turn it into before starting to

design

Page 10: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

Activity 2 – Introduction• Use an old product and turn it into a STOMP style percussion

instrument

• You can do anything you need to alter it’s shape. EG cut, fold, drill, screw, sew it, paint it, glue it in any way you like etc

The new product that you design must:• Be inspired by STOMP• Create different timbres and pitches when struck • Be creatively designed and be strong enough to last 4 weeks

of rehearsals• Be washed thoroughly so it is both safe and clean• Have a creative and interesting structure

Page 11: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

Activity 2 – TASK 1Research ideas for your recycled STOMP instrument and make sure you are aware of shapes, sizes and materials before you start designing.

Remember; your design must be suitable for making

EXTENSION

Include an image board including

all the images you have collected,

annotate them explaining your likes,

dislikes, what it used to be and what

it has been reused as.

Page 12: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

Activity 2 – TASK 2• Sketch 4 ideas for your

product on the paper provided

• Add black fine liner and render neatly using tone

• Annotate your ideas explaining the materials chosen, how you will cut / fold them out, how they will be assembled, what paints / finish will be applied, what timbres and pitches will be created and how you plan to achieve this. Also what percussion instrument is it linked to.

Expected layout above: Level 6b

Sorry no STOMP examples available yet... You will be the first!

Page 13: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

Activity 2 – TASK 3On a second piece of paper, you should sketch your favourite design,

add fineliner, render and annotate in detail explaining how it will be made (Be the FIRST STOMP example on here)

Level 5b

Level 6cSorry STOMP examples not available… you will be the first!

Page 14: Y8 stomp sustainability 6 r's guidance

• Make the final instrument you have designed for activity 2 using whatever materials you feel suitable

• Research existing real percussion instruments and try to recreate them - e.g. a complete drum kit • If you make a complex instrument with adaptions and changes to the original shape, you will

achieve a higher level if made accurately / realistically• It must be in the style of “STOMP” & BE CREATIVE!

Think of how you will achieve:• Timbres (tone colour / sounds), rings made out different materials result in in different timbres• Pitch versus non-pitched (high versus low pitch vs un pitched) E.G. Varying length/size of material

or tension of drum membrane • Durability (something that could last a term - or easily renewed if it wears out e.g. newspaper)

Research using wikipedia and state how the vibrations are produced and classify your instrument as either: idiophone, membramaphone, chordophone, aerophone.

DURABILITY AND MATERIAL CHOICE IS IMPORTANT WHEN MAKING TO ACHIEVE

DIFFERENT TIMBRES AND PITCHES!
