Cao Ba MinhBorn Hai Duong, Vietnam (French Indochina), 1942Served in Vietnam, South Vietnamese Air Force, Saigon and Da Nang, editorial staff, 1967-75

My works are washed in the blood and tears of suffering, of annihilation, of brother killing brother—all the baggage of humanity's shame. In my youth I was drawn and woven into the fabric of Vietnam, into a history written in shame, not pride.

Artist Statement: I left my career as a writer and entered the world of painting because what I was compelled to say words will not satisfy. This portrait, this face of monstrosities, is a vehicle to expose the kind of wickedness that the human soul can create and, in turn, suffer.

Nguyên KhaiNguyen Khai (Khai Buu) was born in Hue, South Vietnam in 1940. He graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1963. He is one of the founders of the prestigious Association of Young Vietnamese Artists and won the Bronze Medal at a Spring Art Exhibition in Saigon even before his graduation. In 1981, after six years of communist regime, Nguyen Khai and his family resettled in California where he was able to re-gain his artistic freedom.

Nguyen Khai is known for his creativity, imagery and strong use of color. He delves deep into his cultural past and new western experience for inspiration. His oil paintings evoke romantic interludes, nostalgic yearnings and sensuous beauty. Khai's talent extends to include non-traditional art such as abstract, mixed media and stone carvings. Nguyen Khai has created a series of mixed media designed to explore the effects of technology on human life and spirituality which he named "Mankind and Computers".

James T. Dinh My work explores ideas about place and what helps to define it. Whether physical or mental space, I believe place is, to a large degree, the amalgamation of cultural-historical layers and sensory experiences – visual, auditory, etc. There is no such thing as a neutral place. When these qualities can be grasped, highlighted, or expanded upon within a design, then it becomes more connected and adapted to a work’s context and audience.

James T. Dinh In exploring ideas about place, I often examine in my work the relationship between human culture and natural phenomena, not as opposing forces but as forces that respond to one another in positive and negative ways. And perhaps owing to my own immigrant experience, I am drawn to the complex historical process whereby different cultures meet, overlap, and produce hybrid outcomes.

Without distinguishing between art, landscape architecture or any creative endeavor, I choose to take a flexible, inclusive approach that is not predetermined by style but by contextual realities and building conditions. Only then, I believe, can the result express a level of complexity and honesty.

Việt LêArtist Statement: The still photographic series was started when my late father began to deteriorate; it grapples with liminality and loss. This series is intended to vaguely resemble snapshot/ documentary images but reveal themselves as fully staged upon closer inspection, positing the (dysfunctional/ dystopian) domestic scene as a self-conscious, self-reflexive site of drama and disjunctured narrative. These images are taken during and in the aftermath of my father’s long illness. What happens when dominant narratives, personal myths prove to be bankrupt?
