WAYS OUR MEDIA PRODUCT USES CONVENTIONS:

Our media product uses the convention that is used in all films which is titles. For titles, names of cast and crew are used and we applied this to our product during editing.

Theme: Our opening sequences sets a theme by the use of mise en scene, camera movement, sound and editing. The theme that is set reflects a thriller as events build up and someone is sacrificed at the end of the scene.

Narrative + characters work alongside theme as the genre is established by what the characters do and who they are. Therefore, our media product uses a narrative as the events shown build up.

Our opening also uses this (left) for an establishing shot which immediately represents narrative and theme. However, we also challenge the use of an establishing shot.

WAYS OUR MEDIA PRODUCT DEVELOPS CONVENTIONS:

The main way in which our product develops conventions is the development of our production logo, ‘Abandoned Productions’.Normally, films use well known production logos such as Warner Brothers, to show who has produced the film. However, we have developed thriller conventions as sometimes films use production logos relating to the film genre, which is what we have done.We thought that developing our own logo showed a deeper understanding of thriller conventions.

Our opening sequence also develops thriller conventions in the sense that many thrillers use a series of shot as a montage to set the scene. Included with this is the fact that shots are fast paced and we have developed both these aspects while creating our film.

WAYS OUR MEDIA PRODUCT CHALLENGES CONVENTIONS:

Our media product uses this as the establishing shot, however, the convention is challenged because usually establishing shots are relatively long shots and are also held for a while but our establishing shot quickly fades into other shots.

Our opening sequence also challenges conventions in the sense that often the protagonist is established in relation to the antagonist or, at the least, the audience gets a sense of who the characters are.Our characters are shown just enough to gather by elements such as mise en scene, that they are emo/goths that isolate themselves socially. However, we do not establish as to whether the characters are good or evil yet, especially the character who is sacrificed, which challenges the convention.
