Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We thought Anchor Bay entertainment would be an ideal distribution company because they have experience in marketing independent horror films. They will have the understanding of how to distribute as widely as possible with consideration of the small budget we have designated with our film. We would consider our film to be independent because of the budget we have set it which is low and has very limited production. For example, we only had one camera to film with, very basic lighting and means to create mise-en-scene and low profile actors. For example, a horror film that Anchor Bay Entertainment have distributed is The Lords of Salem, released on September 10th 2012 it was directed by Rob Zombie Its budget was $1.5 million and it’s box office was $1,165,882. Anchor Bay Entertainment were able to enter the film into the 2012 Toronto Film Festival, this would not have been possible without the distributors connections they have. This enabled the film to have a wider release and receive reviews for example Fangoria and The Playlist gave positive reviews for the film.

We originally thought that Vertigo films would be an appropriate distributor but there was such limited information about how they previously distributed their films that we weren’t sure if it would be the right choice.

Distributing

We have chosen to market on social networking sites as it’s free and an easy way to reach wide audiences and connect to positive technological determinist. This will allow us to viral market our film and reach the core target audience (typical 15-24 male) We live in the modern world with web 2.0, meaning that I gives audiences the ability to interact with media content. The Internet is a participatory media, so it allows us to personalise content, including media content.

We will make posters to advertise so we can put them onto billboards and online. We can also create a trailer to be a quick and easy way for consumers to get a synopsis of the film. We can post the trailer on various forms of media such as Web 2.0, TV and in the cinemas.

Due to our low budget and our stylistic film we have decided to exhibit our film at Curzon cinemas. These cinemas are small venues located in London

We cannot directly target our desired audience however we can exhibit using social networking sites that we have mentioned previously. By using social networking site we have a greater risk of people pirating our video content.

Here are some film festivals we would exhibit our film at. This way we will reach a wider range of people and make our film known across different countries. By showing our film in Cannes film festival we can increase the release in certain territories.

We would also enter our film into film contests such as:

Funding

We have decided to use Kickstarter to help us fund money for our project, as it is independent we only need a low budget so therefore Kickstarter is a ideal website. It allows people to lend out small amounts of money to help ‘kick start’ a project which they believe in, eventually if enough people donate you should have enough money to complete production.

We can also go the the BFI to ask for funding. To do this we would need to take our treatment and USP to package our key attributes to show them why they should invest in our film.
