The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein

This is a corrected compilation and EFL recording, by Steve Hoover in support of Claire Wu’s May 6, 2009 Reading Competition. Current Youtube and Internet blog postings contain errors or are of limited suitability for EFL students. No monetary benefits accrue to the compiler: satisfaction in enabling learners does.

It was missing a piece.

   And it was not happy

Page 3: The Missing Piece draft 1

3

So it set off in search of its missing piece

Page 4: The Missing Piece draft 1

4

And as it rolled it sang this song- "Oh I'm lookin' for my missin' piece I'm lookin' for my missin' piece Hi-dee-ho, here I go, Lookin' for my missin' piece."

Page 5: The Missing Piece draft 1

5

Sometimes it baked in the sun

Page 6: The Missing Piece draft 1

6

but then the cool rain would come down.

Page 7: The Missing Piece draft 1

7

And sometimes it was frozen by the snow. but then the sun would come and warm it again.

Page 8: The Missing Piece draft 1

8

And because it was missing a piece

it could not roll very fast

so it would stop to talk to a worm

Page 9: The Missing Piece draft 1

9

or smell a flower

Page 10: The Missing Piece draft 1

10

and sometimes it would pass a beetle

Page 11: The Missing Piece draft 1

11

and sometimes the beetle would pass it

Page 12: The Missing Piece draft 1

12

and this was the best time of all.

Page 13: The Missing Piece draft 1

13

And on it went, over oceans.

Page 14: The Missing Piece draft 1

14

"Oh I'm lookin' for my missin' piece Over land and over seas. So grease my knees and fleece my bees, I'm lookin' for my missin' piece."

Page 15: The Missing Piece draft 1

15

through swamps and jungles

up mountains ,

Page 16: The Missing Piece draft 1

16

and down mountains

Page 17: The Missing Piece draft 1

17

Until one day, lo and behold!

"I've found my missin' piece," it sang, "I've found my missin' piece So grease my knees and fleece my bees

Page 18: The Missing Piece draft 1

18

"Wait a minute," said the piece. "Before you go greasing your knees and fleecing your bees..."

Page 19: The Missing Piece draft 1

19

I am not your missing piece. I am nobody's piece. I am my own piece.

And even if I was somebody's missing piece I don't think I'd be yours!"

Page 20: The Missing Piece draft 1

20

"Oh," it said sadly,    "I'm sorry to have bothered you."    And rolled on.    It found another piece

Page 21: The Missing Piece draft 1

21

but this one was too small.

Page 22: The Missing Piece draft 1

22

And this one was too big

Page 23: The Missing Piece draft 1

23

this one a little too sharp

Page 24: The Missing Piece draft 1

24

and this one was too square.

Page 25: The Missing Piece draft 1

25

One time it seemed to have found the perfect piece

Page 26: The Missing Piece draft 1

26

but it didn't hold it tightly enough    and lost it.

Page 27: The Missing Piece draft 1

27

 Another time

it held too tightly

Page 28: The Missing Piece draft 1

28

and it broke

Page 29: The Missing Piece draft 1

29

Page 30: The Missing Piece draft 1

30

So on and on it rolled,

Page 31: The Missing Piece draft 1

31

having adventures

Page 32: The Missing Piece draft 1

32

 falling into holes

Page 33: The Missing Piece draft 1

33

 and bumping into stone walls.

Page 34: The Missing Piece draft 1

34

And one day it came upon another piece that seemed to be just right.

Page 35: The Missing Piece draft 1

35

"Hi," it said. "Hi," said the piece. "Are you anybody else's missing piece?" "Not that I know of." "Well, maybe you want to be your own piece?" "I can be someone's and still be mine." "Well, maybe you don't want to be mine." "Maybe I do." "Maybe we won't fit...." "Well..."

"Hummm?" "Ummmm!"

Page 36: The Missing Piece draft 1

36

It fit!    It fit perfectly!    At last! At last!

Page 37: The Missing Piece draft 1

37

Page 38: The Missing Piece draft 1

38

And away it rolled    and because it was now complete,   it rolled faster and faster.    Faster than it had ever rolled before!

Page 39: The Missing Piece draft 1

39

So fast that it could not stop to talk to a worm    or smell a flower

Page 40: The Missing Piece draft 1

40

too fast for a butterfly to land

Page 41: The Missing Piece draft 1

41

But it could sing its happy song, at last it could sing "I've found my missing piece."

Page 42: The Missing Piece draft 1

42

And it began to sing- "I've frown my nizzin' geez Uf vroun my mitzin' brees So krease ny meas An bleez ny drees Uf frown..." Oh my, now that it was complete it could not sing at all.

Page 43: The Missing Piece draft 1

43

"Aha," it thought.    "So that's how it is!"  He stopped.

Page 44: The Missing Piece draft 1

44

So it stopped rolling... and it set the piece down gently,

Page 45: The Missing Piece draft 1

45

and slowly rolled away

Page 46: The Missing Piece draft 1

46

and as it rolled it softly sang-

Page 47: The Missing Piece draft 1

47

"Oh I'm lookin' for my missin' piece I'm lookin' for my missin' piece Hi-dee-ho, here I go, Lookin' for my missin' piece."
