Online vs Newspaper reader figuresAs of February 2014, independent.co.uk was accessed from 30+ million unique internet browsers per month and on average 1.3 million unique browsers per day. Online content from The Independent can be accessed either through the independent.co.uk website, or through the relatively new app, which has been billed as their free digital newspaper.As of January/February 2014 the average number of physical newspapers in circulation was 66,576, with just over 99% of copies being sold in the UK.

Links/partnerships with other institutionsThe Independent is owned by the media conglomerate Independent News & Media plc based in Dublin, Ireland.It owns numerous national newspapers in Ireland and the United Kingdom, as well as being the second biggest newspaper publisher in South Africa.INM also has a stake in a newspaper publisher in Australia and New Zealand, and has previously entered the Indian market although no longer owns any shares in Indian companies.Overall it owns over 200 print titles, more than 130 radio stations, 100+ websites and a number of billboards, and is among the top press companies in five different countries.The company formerly owned half of the second largest cable TV network in Ireland.It has also held shares in an internet service provider and an electronic payment and telecoms operator.The Independent also partners with companies offering services such as searching for houses for sale (Zoopla), interior design (Homes & Property), local tradespeople (Rated People) and mortgage advice (L&C).

How audiences use the online newspaperArticles are linked to from the homepage, or can be searched for from within the website or through external search engines.When viewing each article, there is the option to share the story on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and google+, as well as through e-mail.There is a comments section on each article where anyone with an account on the website can express their views and discuss their opinions with like-minded (and not-so like-minded) individuals. There are RSS feeds for each section of the site so that audience members with an RSS client can receive updates on particular topics as soon as they are posted.

Following a recent news storyOne current major story that has had many articles written on the subject by The Independent is that of the Ukraine crisis.The situation is that Vladimir Putin has deployed Russian troops in Crimea with the freedom to deploy more throughout Ukraine, due to the two countries disagreeing on who is in authority in Ukraine.In the past few days as actions have escalated numerous articles have been posted on each day on the website relating to different consequences of the events.Articles are mostly text but each article includes a number of images there is also an In pictures section inline with each article on the subject with photographs of protests, deployed Russian troops and other scenes from Crimea.
