THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUIPMENT OF THE LEARNER
TWO FUNDAMENTAL QUALITIES
A. Cognitive Faculty
Cognitive means involving conscious intellectual activity such as thinking, reasoning, or remembering.
The cognitive faculties of the learners involved the learners:
Five sensesMemoryImaginationIntellect
Five sensesThrough the learners five senses , the
learner can be able to:
See – learns through seeing thingsHear – learns best through hearing
thingsFeel – learns through experiencing/doing things
Smell use their sense of smell/tasteTaste to learn
TWO FUNDAMENTAL QUALITIES
General Facts
The visual learner remembers 75% of what they read or see.
Demonstrations from the blackboard, diagrams, graphs and charts are all valuable tools for the visual learner.
Generally, analytic visual learners will process the printed word before iconic (pictorial) information.
Generally, global visual learners will process iconic (pictorial) information before reading the printed text.
General Facts The auditory learner MUST HEAR things for them to
have the best chance of learning. Only 30% of the general school-age population is
auditory. Generally, the auditory learner will remember 75%
of what they hear in a lecture. Using the auditory modality is the most difficult way
to learn new material.
Learning Strengths of the Auditory Learner Remembers what they hear and say. Enjoys classroom and small-group discussion. Can remember oral instructions well. Understands information best when they HEAR it.
General Facts•The tactile-kinesthetic learner must DO things for them to have the best chance of learning.
•The tactile-kinesthetic learner remembers best the things they experience.
•Kinesthetic learning involves use of the whole body rather than just hands-on.
•Getting information from written materials or by listening is not as easy as aforementioned methods.
OLFACTORY LEARNER They are the people who
associate what they learn with particular smells or tastes.
THE LEARNERS MEMORY, IMAGINATION, & INTELLECT ARE ALSO AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN LEARNING PROCESS.
With the use of MEMORY, the
learner can recall or retain post
mental actions in his/her mind. The memory serves as the storage of the prior knowledge of
the learner.
With the use of IMAGINATION, the
learner can be able to form
pictorial representation of
material objects in his/her mind.
With the use of learners INTELLECT, the learner can be
able to form concepts of ideas as
he/she thinks, as well make judgment
from given information & reason
out.
B. APPETITIVE FACULTY Refers to the learners feeling & emotions &
rational will.
Using the learners feelings, as well as, the learners emotions, the learner can be able to experience:
Pain, Joy, Happy, Sad, or Angry
To a particular subject or situation. With his/her feelings, he can be able to identify & experience the real feelings about a particular thing/situation.
Using the learners rational will, the learners has the capacity to think & choose, what he/she thinks to be desirable according to his/her own analysis.
The learners rational will, will serve as a kind of guiding force or a main integrating force in his/her character.
All learners are equipped with the cognitive & appetitive faculties.
They differ in the degree to which they are utilized & expressed on account of the Learner’s:
A – abilityA – aptitudesI – interestsFC – family & cultural backgroundA – attitudes
For e.g. by using Mnemonics, and Acronyms
AIDS: acquired immune deficiency syndrome
NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Scuba: self-contained underwater breathing apparatus
Laser: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
Radar: radio detection and ranging
CD-ROM: (cee-dee-[rɒm]) Compact Disc read-only memory
JPEG: (jay-[pɛɡ]) Joint Photographic Experts Group
Classification of learners when it comes to typical reactions & facility to learn:
F – fast learner or H – High achieverA – Average learner or M – Moderate achieverS – Slow learner or S – Slow achiever
Learners are categorized to their mental ability:
S – SuperiorA – Above averageB – Below average
“A wide range in their intelligence is a factor to consider in planning instruction.”
ABILITY It determines their capacity to
understand and assimilate information for their own use and application.
Learners differ from one another on how to observe and interpret the situation on the surrounding environment.
For e.g. by using MNEMONICs
