SEASONS Cookeville culture is pretty casual. You should bring whatever

you feel comfortable in, and bring clothes that you can wear in any weather, from shorts to big coats. One of the most frequent complaints about Cookeville is that you cannot actually predict the weather, because you really can’t tell what might happen during one 24 hour period. You name it, Cookeville has it – sun, rain, snow, fog, even the occasional tornado (though not typically on the same day). It might be easier to break it down by seasons:

Fall/Autumn: This is actually one of the most beautiful times of the year in Cookeville, as this is when the leaves turn and you see an amazing range of colors. In September, it will still be pretty warm, and this often lasts mid October, but by the end of November, winter is in the air. The Average Fall temperatures can range from 26 degrees to 10 degrees Celsius.

Winter: Cookeville is not the coldest place during the winter, but it is certainly time to get out your hat, scarf and gloves. Snow is not a common sight – we might see one snowstorm per season. However, Cookeville has been known to have blizzards and ice storms. Average winter temperatures usually range from 12 degrees to –3 degrees Celsius.

Spring: By March, the weather usually starts to improve and the trees start to bloom. In April, the days get warmer, although you wouldn’t know it at 8am - this is when the temperatures can change by 25 degrees in one day. By May, the days are very warm and summer is about to hit. Spring temperatures can range from 23 degrees to 1 degree Celsius.

Summer: Hot, hot hot! And wet! Summer storms in Cookeville are intense – thunder and lightning and a lot of rain, all of which only lasts for about 1 hour, and then the sun comes out, and you would never know it had rained at all. Average summer temperatures can range from 30 degrees to 15 degrees Celsius.

OFF CAMPUS HOUSING

Off Campus Housing Some students prefer to cook their own

meals, and there are houses or apartments with kitchen facilities. For off-campus housing, please make rental arrangements directly with the apartment/home owner.

Remember Rental contracts are usually 6 months or 1 year and have a maximum number of lessees. Students could be evicted if more than the maximum number are living on the premises, which will result in a fine and court visit.

TTU does not assist in finding off campus housing; we recommend students arrive early and stay in hotel while looking for off-campus housing. Most apartments cost range from $400 to $500 a month.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Freshmen are required to live on-campus unless

they can provide documentation that they have special dietary needs; allergies; medical problems which will be difficult to accommodate in the resident halls or if they are older than 25 and/or are married and have children.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSING AVAILABLE OFF-CAMPUS

Living Quarters: A single room or double room is shared with one or more students; the bathroom and kitchen are to be shared in this type of facility.

•Rooms with Kitchen: Some houses have rooms with adjacent small private kitchens. Some students prefer to have a private kitchen.

•Apartments: Furnished and unfurnished apartments and trailers are available to students. We recommend that a student rent a furnished apartment in which all necessary furniture is available.

Usually a furnished apartment will have a sofa, bed, refrigerator, stove, table, and chairs. The resident must supply cooking utensils and dishes. In most apartments, landlords do not pay the utilities, such as electricity, water, gas, etc.
