Built in 1978, Bush Stadium has been the home of Tennessee Tech baseball for more than 40 years. The Golden Eagles moved into the stadium at the start of the 1978 season, and won the first game ever played there, a 7-6 win over Eastern Kentucky. But Bush Stadium hasnt always looked the way it does today. Over the past 15 years the facil-ity has seen tremendous upgrades. In 1995 Bush Stadium saw the addition of its 3,240 square-foot clubhouse. Among the features of the clubhouse are player and coaches locker rooms, coaches offices, team weight room and a team lounge area. In 1997 lights were added to the facility and the Golden Eagles played their first night game at home on March 25, 1997, a 9-6 loss to Tennessee. At the time, Tech was only the fourth school in the Ohio Valley Conference to

have a lighted baseball field. The facil-ity was dedicated as Bush Stadium in 1997 in honor of Howell W. Bush, who donated the funds needed to bring lights to the facility. The next addition to the facility came only a year later, in 1998, when a new press box was added to the top of the stands at Bush Stadium. The 460 square foot press box features three separate rooms to house game man-agement, home and visiting media. In 2000 the team added a batting cage to the facility. The cage is inside a 3,600 square foot covered building adjacent to the clubhouse. With all the additions over the years, Bush Stadium has transformed into a first-class baseball facility, and is truly a home field advantage to Tech baseball players.

PITCHING An experienced pitching staff is set to return for the Golden Eagles in the 2012 season, just two seasons removed from winning the 2010 OVC regular season championship. As-sistant coach Don Suttles returns for his sophomore season at the helm of the pitching staff and will continue to mold the returning pitchers and several new faces that will ascend the mound this season. TTU fans will see some familiar faces at the front end of the rotation as both senior Matthew Shepherd and junior Tristan Archer will resume their roles from a season ago. Archer and Shepherd each made 14 starts last season, and combined for 10 wins and two complete games. Archer, who garnered an OVC Pitcher of the Week honor last season, saved his best performance for last as he kept a powerful Eastern Kentucky lineup at bay as he pitched 7.1 innings and six strikeouts to give Tech the win in the opening round of the OVC Tour-nament. His seven wins and 88.2 in-nings pitched were the most among TTU pitchers, while his 67 strikeouts tied for the team lead. Shepherd finished his season with three wins in 17 appearances over 74.2 innings. His 64 strikeouts ranked third on the team last season com-pared to 31 walks. Golden Eagle newcomer David Hess is also expected to be one of TTUs weekend starters. The right-handed freshman finished his senior season at Tullahoma High School with

an 8-1 record and a 1.91 ERA. Several Gold-en Eagle pitch-ers should com-pete for weekday starts including a pair of return-ees in junior Nick Price and sopho-more southpaw Jake McWhirter. Price and Mc-Whirter each made eight starts last season, in a combined 34 ap-pearances. Price finished his season with four wins in 58.2 innings pitched, to go along with 38 strikeouts. His per-formance against Austin Peay in the second round of the OVC Tournament was one of his best of the season as he threw 3.1 shutout innings in relief, giving up just one hit while blanking three. McWhirter finished his rookie campaign with 33 strikeouts as he threw 39.2 innings. The Golden Eagles also have four experienced arms returning to shore up the bullpen, including senior Cul-len Park, and sophomores Garrett Baugh, Justin Alexander and Andy Williams. Park made an immediate impact in the late innings, accounting for four saves, as he made a team-high 27 appearances. His 67 strikeouts tied for the team lead as he posted a 3-3

record and a 4.27 ERA. Baugh, who finished with a team-best 4.05 ERA, won three games in 18 ap-pearances as he gave up just eight extra base hits. Eight new faces will join the Golden Eagle pitching staff, in-cluding lefties Tanner Williams and Josh Bryant and righties Seth Lucio, Zane Mor-

ton, Bobby Roach, Byron Skinner and Tyler Wilson. Roach and Lucio will serve dual roles both on the mound and in the field, while Williams and Bryant will be good matchup options for the Golden Eagles down the stretch.

CATCHER The Golden Eagles will have sev-eral options catcher this season, but none stands out more than senior Ben Burgess. Burgess has been the mainstay battery mate for the last two seasons that included an OVC championship. During his junior campaign he start-ed in all 54 games drove in 21 runs and scored 35 runs. He also threw out 14 base stealers and picked off four runners. Joining Burgess behind the plate this season are junior Evan Frazier and newcomers Jordan Hopkins and Aaron Whitten. Frazier batted .309 in 41 games last season and tallied six home runs and 29 RBI. Hopkins and Whitten should compete for playing time this season as well. Hopkins will be relied upon for his defensive abilities be-hind the plate.

INFIELD The Tech infield should feature plenty of familiar faces as senior Chad Hayes, junior Zephan Guyear, and sophomore Zach Stephens re-turn with a combined total of 146 games played last season. At first base, Stephens provided some of the biggest offensive pops

last season as he tied for the team-lead in home runs with 10, while driv-ing in a team-high 49 RBI. A member of the OVC all-Freshman Team, Ste-phens began his career at Tech with hits in his first 10 games, and put to-gether 18 multi-hit games through-out the season. Stephens was also named Freshman All-American. Hayes made 53 starts at shortstop last season, where he hit .297, which included one home run and a club-high four triples. On the base paths, Hayes posted three steals in as many attempts. He remained equally as ef-fective in the field as he posted 70 putouts and a team-leading 140 as-sists. Guyear split time at second base and third base in 2011. Guyear put together a nine-game hitting streak last season as he drove in 15 runs and scored 19. Newcomers Dylan Bosheers and Lucio will also see some time in the infield and could become regular contributors before the sea-son is done. Albert DelGaicco could also see playing time and provide some solid power from the left side of the plate.

OUTFIELDWith two of Techs mainstays from the outfield last season departing, Tech fans can expect to see some new fac-es roam around the outfield, but there will be one familiar face in junior Aus-tin Wulf. Last season, Wulf served as Techs left fielder and leadoff hitter as he recorded a .284 batting average and scored 41 runs. In 55 starts, Wulf re-

corded just one error in the field. His .410 on-base percentage ranked near the top of the team last season as he tallied 61 hits and 30 walks. Five other players could see some time in the outfield this season includ-ing returnees Mi-chael Morris and sophomore Te-vis Sherfield and three newcomers including David Allen and Hess, and junior transfer James Abraham. Morris hit .288 in 29 games last season, which included a home run and a double. Abraham and Sherfield are the prototypical scrappy Golden Eagle outfielders who are not afraid to get dirty. Michael Morris will also com-pete for playing time in the outfield as well.

SCHEDULE The 2012 schedule should prove interesting as the Golden Eagles will host 30 games at home and take on some of the best teams the NCAA has to offer. Nine of Techs 2012 opponents are either ranked in the preseason poll or are listed among teams receiving votes for the poll. The poll includes Vanderbilt (ranked 23rd), Clemson

(25th) and Mis-souri State (31st). The opponents who have re-ceived enough attention to be earning votes in-clude Texas Tech, Illinois State, Ken-tucky, Tennessee, Central Michigan and Austin Peay. One of the biggest changes Tech baseball fans will notice with this upcoming

season is the switch in the OVC sched-ule format. For a quarter of a century, a three-game OVC series featured a doubleheader one day and a single game the next. Now a three-game series will take place over a three-day stretch, with all three games sched-uled for nine innings. After opening with four games in Texas and a road game at East Ten-nessee (Feb. 22), the Golden Eagles will host a remarkable stretch with 13 of the next 15 games at home in the Averitt Express Baseball Com-plex, including four non-conference three-game sets. The home schedule begins Feb. 24-26 with a visit from Illi-nois State, one of those teams receiv-ing votes. Tech will also host Dayton (March 2-4), Evansville (March 9-11) and Central Michigan (March 16-18). Also in the midst of that stretch is a single home game with Lipscomb. TTUs non-conference schedule will also have a little regional flair to it as it takes on several different oppo-nents in and around Tennessee. Middle Tennessee, Lipscomb and Belmont are each slated for a pair of games against the Golden Eagles this season, in addition to four single games at Vanderbilt (March 27), East Tennessee State (Feb. 22), Tennessee (March 13) and Braggas alma mater, Kentucky (March 6). The OVC Tournament, which will be held in Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn., is scheduled for May 23-27 for the top six teams in the OVC stand-ings.

Techs 2012 Freshman Class (front row, left to right): Jor-dan Hopkins, Seth Lucio, Dylan Bosheers, Aaron Whitten.

(back row, left to right): David Allen, Albert Del Gaicco, Bobby Roach, Tanner Williams, David Hess.

given to the team that outwardly upholds the principles and sportsmanship guidelines outlined by the Ohio Valley Confer-ence. The award-winners are voted upon by head coaches and sports information directors from around the league. Oberacker and Kirby-Jones combined to be named to nine All-American teams between the two of them, marking 2010 as the first year (and first decade) in history that Techs baseball program has put out more than one player who was named to an All-American team, and the first time that a sin-gle player was named to multiple teams. The pair, also named TTUs Co-Male Athletes of the Year, were also joined by two of their teammates in Adam Libera-tore and Stephen Pryor as professional ball-players after being drafted in the top 25 rounds of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 2009, Bragga led the Golden Eagles to a 31-24-1 re-cord, making it the first back-to-back 30 win seasons in Tech history. The Golden Eagles carried their momentum into the OVC Tournament where they swept away the competition, going 4-0 including a pair of extra inning wins over Jackson-ville State to clinch the OVC title. The Golden Eagles then went on to the NCAA regional in Clemson, S.C., where they eliminated No. 14 Alabama before being eliminated by eventual regional-champion Clemson. The Golden Eagles had two all-conference team members, six all-tournament team members, the OVC tournament MVP in A.J. Kirby-Jones and the all-Regional Performer Alex Henry. The veteran coach continues his work toward redefining the program with high ideals and even greater expectations. Taking over the head coaching reins in January 2004, Bragga has shown the dedication needed to win an OVC championship, and his players exhibit that same down-to-earth determination, day-in and day-out. His plan has brought about marked improvements in the teams on-field perfor-mance, academic performance, alumni support and program facilities.

After eight seasons at the helm of the Tennessee Tech baseball program, head coach Matt Bragga continues to raise the bar for the Golden Eagles. The 2009 TBCA Coach of the Year and 2010 OVC Coach of the Year, Bragga continues to have great expectations for his Golden Eagle baseball team. The 2011 season saw yet another trip to the OVC Tourna-ment for the Golden Eagles where they were bounced out in the semi finals after finishing fourth place in the regular season standings. He also saw his 10th player in the last five seasons drafted to a Major League Baseball team as the Oakland As drafted Chad Oberacker. Along with their success on the field, Braggas players have been just as successful in the classroom as the baseball team fin-ished with a 967 APR in 2011. During the last three seasons, at least 75 percent of the Golden Eagles roster has been on the TTU Athletic Directors Honor Roll, posting at least a 3.0 GPA. In 2010 Bragga guided the Golden Eagles to their third straight 30-win season - a feat that has never before been ac-complished in Tech program history - and subsequently being named the 2010 OVC Coach of the Year, Braggas seventh season in Cookeville can only be labeled as one of his most successful as his team took home the 2010 OVC Regular Season Champion-ship. Under Braggas direction, the Golden Eagles capped off their 2010 season with a 31-25 overall record, finishing 14-6 in regular season conference play to clinch the No. 1 seed headed into post season play. The team went 2-2 in the OVC Tournament to claim the runner-up spot in Jackson to finish out their post-season. The team had five named to the OVC All-Tournament Team in AJ Kirby-Jones, Chad Oberacker, Frankie Beech, Ben Bur-gess and Lee Henry. Henry was also named the 2010 OVC Pitcher of the Year. The team also collected the OVC Sportsmanship Award,

On the field, Braggas silent resolve has taken the program from a 13-42 record in his first full year in 2005, improving 5.5 games in 2006 with a record of 18-36, making an eight game improvement in 2007 with a record of 26-28, and another seven game improvement in 2008 as the Golden Eagles went 35-23-1, leading to the OVC championship, an NCAA Regional berth in 2009, and an OVC regular season championship in 2010. With success on the recruiting trails, Bragga continues to take the TTU Baseball program to a new level. Before taking the head coaching post at Tech, Bragga spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Birmingham South-ern College under head coach Brian Shoop. He spent the major-ity of his time at BSC working as the hitting and outfielder coach as well as recruiting for the Panthers. Under Braggas direction, BSC hitters batted a combined .316 during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In 2003, 10 Panthers hit over .300 for a team batting aver-age of .318 overall. The Panthers scored 7.9 runs per game which ranked 15th in NCAA Division I. Before moving to the NCAA Divi-sion I for the 2002 season, the Panthers won the NAIA National Championship in 2001 as 11 Panthers hit .300 or better and av-eraged 8.5 runs per game. In 2001, the Panthers set a school re-cord for most wins in a season, going 55-11. Bragga also owned some head coaching experience be-fore coming to Tech. At the age of 25, prior to his role at Birming-ham Southern, Bragga served as the head coach at Bevill State (Ala.) Community College for four seasons. Bragga took over a Bevill State baseball program that, pri-or to his arrival, had an all time record of 175-350 (.343), and was considered by many one of the worst programs in the state of Alabama. With the Bears going 39-20 in 1998, Braggas second season at Bevill State resulted in a school record for most wins in one season. That team also participated in the schools first-ever postseason tournament. In 1999, Bragga led his squad to a 40-19 record, surpassing his previous record and taking the team to another regional tournament. During his time at Bevill, his teams compiled a 148-86 re-cord and BSCC went from a .343 winning percentage prior to Braggas arrival, to one of Alabamas best Community/Junior College programs, amassing a remarkable .630 winning per-centage during his time. Before jumping into the college ranks, Bragga served as head coach for the Junior American Legion Baseball Team Post 208 that won the Alabama state championship in 1996. That same year, he also took on the role as assistant coach for the

Tuscaloosa County High School baseball squad. One aspect that makes Bragga such an influential coach, and what some describe as a players coach, is that he has coached and played at nearly every level of baseball. Bragga played his collegiate career for the University of Kentucky Wild-cats, earning four letters from 1991 to 1994. He played multiple positions at Kentucky, including out-field, catcher, first base and designated hitter, and also excelled at the plate. Bragga earned multiple honors including second-team All-Southeast region and Southeastern Conference all-tournament first-team in 1993. In his senior season Bragga fin-ished with a .408 batting average in SEC play, which ranked him second in the league. He also etched his name in the Kentucky baseball record books, ranking among UKs all-time best in multiple season and career categories. During Braggas four-year career with UK, the baseball team compiled the most wins in any four-year period of UK baseball, a record which was recently broken by the 2005-2008 Kentucky squads. After graduating from Kentucky with a degree in com-munications, Bragga signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds organization in 1994. He played one season in the Pioneer League with the Butte (Montana) Copper Kings, where he fin-ished eighth in the league in with a .338 batting average, before moving to Charleston, W.Va., to play with the Cincinnati Reds Single A affiliate the following season. Bragga earned his mas-ters degree from the University of Alabama. Matt is married to the former Elisa Currins, a 1997 graduate of the University of Alabama. The couple are the proud parents of two children Luke and Emerson.

Donnie Suttles begins his second season as the Golden Eagles Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Under Suttles the 2011 pitching staff lowered its stats in five major pitching categories from 2010 including team ERA, Runs, Walks, and Opponent Batting Average. Prior to taking the position at Tennessee Tech, Suttles was the Head Coach at the North Carolina powerhouse TC Roberson High school were he produced five MLB baseball draft picks in four years. This included 1st round draft picks through the 28th round. TC Roberson was ranked within the top five programs in North Carolina by Baseball Amer-ica from 2007-2010 reaching number two in 2007 with a record of 23-4. Suttles holds a career record of 92-21. Hailing from Marion, N.C., Suttles is a member of the Professional Baseball Representatives (PBR), acted as the N.C. State Games Coach and developed the North Carolina Pro Player Clinic for players and coaches. Prior to his time at TCR, Suttles helped out his high school alma mater, McDowell High School, from 2004-2006 and served as the American Legion Coach during the same time. He also spent a year helping Gardner-Webb make the transition to Division I baseball in 2004. His coaching experienced commenced with his role as a player instruc-

tor for the Cleveland Indians Class A af-filiate, the Columbus Redstixx. Suttles experi-ence on the dia-mond goes far be-yond coaching. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 1998 MLB draft by the Cleveland Indi-ans after his junior year at Western Carolina. Suttles was named the most athletic player in the draft for the Cleve-land Indians. He was named Pitcher of the Year and Top Pros-pect in the Appala-

chian League in 1998 where he teamed up with future teammate/roommate Cy Young winner CC Sabathia for a combined no hitter. That Burlington Indians team won the regular season with players such as Sabathia, Victor Martinez, Johnny Peralta, Macier Icturiz, and Willy Taveras all fu-ture MLB All-Stars. Suttles posted ERA and strikeout stats that rank fourth and fifth in the minors. In 1999, Suttles pitched the Columbus Redstixx (South Atlantic League) to the first half championship. Suttles spent time at every level before finally retiring from profes-sional baseball in 2003 due to injury. Western Carolina was where Suttles spent his college career becoming the 1997 Southern Conference regular and post season champions under Coach Keith LeClair. He was named SoCon Pitcher of the week three times, and honored as Pitcher of the Year for the Rocky Moun-tain Rockfish in the Coastal Plains summer league. A native of Jefferson, Ohio, Mihoci is no stranger to the Tech baseball program, as he played four seasons in the infield from 2005-08. Mihoci will coach the outfielders and assist coach Bragga with the hitters and with recruiting. Matt was the very first recruit of mine at Tennes-see Tech, and hell always hold a special place in my heart, Bragga said. He knows our program inside and out and he will be charismatic coach for our team. During his four-year career as a Golden Eagle, Mi-hoci played in 185 games, including 154 starts. He finished with a .299 batting average, 74 RBI and 77 runs scored. He was also named second-team all-OVC as a second base-man in 2008. Mihoci graduated in 2008 with a degree in busi-ness finance and earned his MBA in finance in 2009. Its great to be back, having spent the last few years away, Mihoci said. Being away from Tennessee

In the summer of 2010, Mihoci took on a coaching role for the Alabama Post 34 team that advanced to the state champion-ship game. Coaching was initially what I wanted to do when I first started at Tech, Mihoci said, I quickly re-alized that this is what I love to do. He then moved on to Western Texas College in the fall of 2010 where he sereved as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure at WTC, Mihoci helped guide the Westerners to a 37-17 record, which broke the previous record of 25 wins in a season. The Westerners sported a 4.28 team ERA as a pair of pitchers were named to the Texas Juco All Star Game and two were named first-team all-conference. Mihocis last stop before returning to Tech came last summer as he served as an assistant coach for the Florence Redwolves of the Coastal Plain League. As a member of coach Braggas staff you learn something new every day and I am looking forward to getting everything I can out of this experience, Mihoci said.

A two-time SEC Freshman of the Week out of Mis-sissippi State, Turner brings a wealth of experience as a player and as the infield coach to the Golden Eagles. He will also assist coach Bragga with the hitters. I have a great relationship with Brandon that dates back to when I was recruiting him, Bragga said. I was thrilled when he decided to join our staff and now that he is here I can see why he comes so highly recom-mended by everyone hes worked with. I am glad to be here, Turner said. Its great work-ing for a great coach like coach Bragga and what he has done at Tennessee Tech over the last few years is phenom-enal. Recruited by Bragga out of Walker Valley High School, Turner eventually joined to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, where he quickly made a name for himself. Named second-team NCBWA All-American in 2007, Turner participated in the 2007 College World Series. During his freshman season, he finished second in the SEC in batting average with a mark of .399.

After a distin-guished career at Mississippi State, Turner was select-ed by the Florida Marlins in the 12th round of the 2008 MLB draft. As a member of the Jamestown Jam-mers, Turner finished third in the New York-Penn. League in batting average in 2008, en route to a being named to the NYPL All-Star Game. Before, during and after his playing career, Turn-er has also distinguished himself as a coach. While I was in the minors I always wanted to coach, Turner said. My dad coached for 38 years and it has always intrigued me.
