What is a Web 2.0 Tool?

"Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online."

-Webopedia.com

"A second generation in the development of the World Wide Web, conceived as a combination of concepts, trends, and technologies that focus on user collaboration, sharing of user-generated content, and social networking."

-Dictionary.Reference.com

Penzu (www.penzu.com)

A "private" online journal that has been hailed as the

"most realistic re-creation of paper" by CNET.

Penzu also features a classroom component that is

self-described as "the ultimate teaching and

education tool".

The site's primary function, journaling, is applicable to

a multitude of assignments, and thus many levels

of Bloom's (Technological) Taxonomy, including

creation, evaluation, analysis, application, and

understanding. However, Penzu lends itself most

easily and most readily to:

Creation (designing and planning) and Evaluating

(reviewing, posting)

Penzu can easily be utilized in addressing the following

Common Core Anchor Standards across the curriculum:

Text Types and Purposes: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRAW.1, 2, 3

Production and Distribution of Writing: CCSS.ELA-

Literacy.CCRAW.4, 5, 6

Range of Writing: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRAW.10

Because the primary function of

Penzu is as online journal, it is a

great way for students to plan for

assignments, journal, take notes,

and free write in an online

environment.

Penzu generally supports most

aspects of student writing. A

sample journal entry can be viewed

on Penzu by clicking HERE.

iRubric (http://www.rcampus.com/indexrubric.cfm)

iRubric was created to develop,

share, modify, and collaborate

on rubrics.

Teachers or students can build from existing

Rubrics or create their own making it an

excellent tool for assessing the Evaluating

tier of Bloom's Taxonomy

Two of the Common Core

Anchor Standards from Writing

and Listening are:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.1 Prepare for

and participate effectively in a range of

conversations and collaborations with diverse

partners, building on others’ ideas and

expressing their own clearly and

persuasively.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.3 Evaluate a

speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of

evidence and rhetoric.

iRubric can be utilized to help meet these

standards. One of the best learning tools in

an educator's toolbox is having students

collaboratively develop rubrics. Before the

next presentation in your class students can

work in small groups and then as a whole

class to develop a rubric that everyone

agrees will accurately assess their work.

A sample image is provided above. To view

another sample rubric click here.

Diigo (www.diigo.com)

Diigo is an online tool for annotation and

interacting with texts. This can be utilized on

any webpage with the Diigo web highlighter and

then your annotated article can be shared via

social networking sites, email, or embedded

link. Once the Diigo component is added to the

web browser, a reader can begin showing their

interaction with the text through a variety of

color highlights, notes, post-its, and

bookmarks.

This tool can be used to support student learning by

having them do more than just research or read

information online. A student can read through

and mark-up their own article and then

students can share different articles with each

other to gather information from multiple

sources.

This Web 2.0 tool can be used to address the

following CCSS Anchor Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.11-12.1

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.11-12.6

This is a sample image of an annotated

article while using Diigo. To see a sample

I created click here.

Many levels of Bloom's Taxonomy can be

supported through the use of annotation

and color marking strategies such as

Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis,

and Evaluation. This also promotes the

use of informational texts, a type of

reading that Common Core promotes.
