5 IMPORTANT IDEAS Writing is a skill that needs to be developed and

therefore it need to be taught!

It doesn’t matter that a student has weaknesses in his mother tongue. A good instruction in the foreign language may help him to improve his writing skill.

Writing is a process and at the same time a product.

Writing is not an exercise meant to be done only once but several times.

Writing will always require feedback from an expert.

3 APPROACHES TO TEACHING WRITING

Writing can be seen as a: Process Product Intention

Teaching writing as a process means that we can teach writing step by step. We can start teaching the student the basic structure of a sentence; then, a paragraph; how to connect paragraphs and creating texts. Every step of the process has to be treated carefully and revised to achieve real and accurate outcomes.

If we decide to consider our teaching instruction as a product we need to provide our students with a proper explanation of the different types of texts that can be produce (that are usually a lot!)It is suggested to deal with this approach when the educator is sure that students have achieved an adequate (or at least respectable) mastery of writing as a process.

Writing can also be taught as a means to achieve goals. This instruction requires a mastery of process and product due to the need of providing a semantic and pragmatic message with the product. For instance, you can teach the students to write a letter for applying for an international scholar ships but asking for further information. Is this familiar to you? TOEFL, IELTS, FCE or CAE comes to your mind? This type of writing is closer to these examinations.

ABOUT THE MATERIALS

Materials need to obey to the approaches mentioned; nevertheless, it requires an understanding that teaching students writing is something really complex due to motivation factors affecting the development of this skill. The less motivated a student is, the less the quality of the product created. It is imperative to guide the student creativity from the brainstorming process to writing autonomy. Obtaining results from writing instruction is slow but done well, it is a great success.

This can be done creatively. You can use not only handouts but materials as the robot you designed so you can make them more atractive. Remember that you can mae them big or bigger that usual to get the attention from the student. The limit is your imagination! and budget of course :P
