Helping Special Students Live An Independent Life
What is Special Education?• Special education refers to
providing education to students with physical, mental, behavioral and/or learning difficulties.
• The aim is to address individual differences and requirements of special students to serve their unique educational needs.
Objectives of Special EducationSome note-worthy objectives of special education programs are-• Developing a suitable environment to cater to the unique educational
needs of special students.• Establishing appropriate goals to ensure academic progress and social
development.• Spreading general awareness regarding the rights and facilities
provided for students with special needs.• Providing valuable assistance and guidance to parents to ensure a
wholesome upbringing.
Need for Special Education Schools• Researches reveal that 70 percent of the parents and educators
associate learning disabilities with autism and intellectual disabilities.• Special students do not receive the necessary individualized attention
in mainstream schools.• Teachers in mainstream schools are also not adequately trained to
serve students with special needs. There are many private schools in NYC that provide appropriate educational opportunities to students with special needs.
Accommodations for Special StudentsPrivate schools for special education provide many accommodations to students, which include-• Allotment of extra time and
assistive technology in exams.• Exception from common
educational programs not favorable for them.
• Some private schools also provide paraprofessionals or peer assistants to ensure a better learning environment.
Special Education- Private vs. Public Schools• Private schools provide
additional resources to students with special needs in terms of science, technology, humanities, and visual and performing equipment than public schools.
• Private schools offer education above standard curriculum, and facilitate alternative programs like art, drama and music as well.
• Lower student-teacher ratio in private schools also allow personalized interactions, resulting in speedy learning.
